Sexist Bar Ad In Peterborough That Crosses The Line
Friday, July 8, 2011 at 7:17AM
After our post the other day, "Local Health Organizations Justifably Concerned About 'Free Girl With Every Can' Beer Billboards", a PtboCanada female reader tipped us off about the poster (at right) downtown at the White House Hotel advertising cheap beer. "Honestly, I found it worse than the Old Milwaukee campaign," she said to us.
Now we know sexist beer ads are ubiquitous, but does that make it right to continue to create posters like this?
We say no way. Take the thing down.

I laughed. Twice. Some people are way too PC these days. I have it on good authority that the money she made from modelling for this poster fed her family for a week.
I have it on good authority that that image will sustain me for a week, but i'm not gonna milk it.
I think the Old Milwaukee was worse. And really, do we expect anything less from the White House? As a female, I'm immune to these kinds of ads. They don't bother me, but I can respect that they may bother others.
PTBO_Canada keeping us abreast on all the ongoings.
Do we really have this much free time to actually care about what others are doing? (as I post here) Is it really offending people? Who cares.
Or.....Are we that touchy to the breat add? Touchy? eh...touchy?
What an awesome logo - the eagle is holding 2 beer mugs, with a canadian flag!!!
That White House ad has actually been up in the window for at least 2 years.
We all need to remind ourselves that when there are cries for something to be banned, the item in question will always receive much wider attention than it otherwise would. Shining the spotlight may simply give those things you personally despise a much wider audience. Now people will WANT to go check it out because it is has been magically transformed into something "controversial" instead of just a lowbrow ad that hardly anyone even mentioned prior to the recent beer ad campaign uproar.
In addition, Old Milwaukee knew their ad was going to generate heat. That's why they did it and it paid off. They likely told their ad team to come up with something that would get "some" riled up so they could double up on coverage of the brand. Their research most likely shows that their traditional target demographic would see the ads as hilarious/no big deal. They would not alienate their customer base by this move. There is a hipster demographic who enjoy guzzling Old Mil. due to its "redneck" appeal, ala Pabst Blue Ribbon, so that billboard would only enhance their appreesh. I'm afraid that everyone has played right into the greedy fists of the corporate giant exactly as they (probably) predicted.
Wow... I can see what you're upset about... that Jager is just overpriced!
Yes...I also really enjoyed the logo. Let all go drink Jager at the White House.
Really two years? Doubt it. Look at the ad. Unless they are constantly replacing it it's pretty new looking.
The DBIA wants people to come downtown however I'd be hard pressed to walk down charlottes St now knowing that's there with my young kids.
I suppose we will just avoid wild rock, sticklings, tribal voices etc
If I had of lived here two yours ago and saw it I'd complain. However obviously this place doesn't care but the DBIA should put pressure on the "business" to remove it.
How pathetic.
I thought it was just kind of playful and fun.
Silly me. Turns out I'm sexist. Who knew?
Hey '@' - why would you doubt this ad has been up for about two years? It has. Your deep science forensic investigation debunking this claim simply because you have concluded it looks too "new" is silly and flawed. I wouldn't want you as an expert witness at my trial. A friend of mine actually had her photo taken in front of it LAST SUMMER because she thought it was so ridiculous. I tried to tell her doing this was endorsing the subjugation of women but she was too busy snorting like a maniac at how dumb the sign was to hear me.
By the way '@', you have already been walking your kids past this each and every time you have ventured down Charlotte in recent months and have obviously never noticed it before SOMEONE ELSE brought it to your attention.
Actually "lurker" I barely go downtown since coming to this city.
There is less and less of interest IMO. I'd rather go somewhere else where I can find what I need in the downtown core rather than the flea market style that is this downtown especially when it comes to the sad state of peterborough square. I've never seen a more pathetic excuse for a mall.
Actually I never said it wasn't possible but I doubt it. Apparently lurker you are making yourself appear as the type of people who can't read properly to understand what another says. Nor asking clarifying questions to understand.
Your thought of someone else pointing out about the "ad" to me and I never noticed it before how would you know? Do you know me? Perhaps I'm the one who pointed it out in the first place. You don't know either so take your time and debunk all you like.
Honestly I could say more however I have better things to do with my time which I've wasted enough on you.
'@' - I'm not going to focus on the difficulty you obviously have stringing coherent sentences together. Not sure whether to commend you for trying (if this is your best effort) or simply remain aghast at the result. Regardless...
You're admittedly not a supporter of the downtown, nor are you interested in making it a vibrant place. Thankfully not everyone mimics your stance. Our downtown is cool as ice and offers much more than goofy signs boasting ample cleavage. I guess you haven't noticed, but you can actually walk the streets without having to venture through PTBO Square, should you choose not to. The place has these crazy things called "doors" built right in and if you don't open them, you can totally avoid going through them! How weird is that?! Though truthfully, there is no better place in the city to pick up bootleg perfume at an affordable price.
