Driver Goes Barrelling Through The Picket Line At Fleming College, Records It & Uploads To YouTube

UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 13th, 3:30 p.m. Here's the latest from CHEX Newswatch's Greg Davis on the Fleming strike, the picket line, the students and the growing frustration on both sides.

UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 9th, 10:32 a.m. BREAKING NEWS: From Special Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service Release...

Youtube video leads to arrest:

Further to the youtube video that circulated that depicted a vehicle driving through the strike line at Sir Sandford Fleming College and the ongoing police investigation.  On the 9th of September 2011 20 year old Isaac Tilstra of Peterborough turned himself into the Peterborough Police station.  Tilstra is charged with Dangerous Driving and was held for a bail hearing on the 9th of September 2011 to begin the process to determine his guilt or innocence.

--------------------

UPDATE: Dumb and Dumber had the slight smarts to remove the video, but Donald Fraser over at Small Print blog made a copy before they did so which has now been passed around. So, if you haven't watched it, here it is:

-----------

ORIGINAL POST

Sure frustation is mounting at the long lines, but this is utterly unexcusable. Someone could have been seriously hurt. Listen as the driver speeds up as he approaches the line. And they laugh about it. Dumb and dumber.

Actually, I feel the same way. Don't interfere with other peoples' jobs or education if you aren't satisfied with yours. I want to buy the driver of that car lunch. A good lunch.

Previous commenter is as much of a loser as the person in the video. Check your head.

Yah... You don't charge a line of people with a speeding car. What if even one of those picketers wasn't paying attention? Would be a very different video...

I can understand their frustration, but I'm sure there are more creative and safe ways to show how you feel.

It appears that Fleming will accept anyone into their institution and high schools will let anyone graduate.

One thing to put others lives in danger and another to be dumb enough to post it online for all to see. Good, quick thinking by Donald Fraser to copy it before they took it off in fear.

I don't agree with the strike either but disregarding other's well being then posting it online to look cool -- that is just crossing more than the picket line.

Maybe Fleming can find out who they were and remove them from the enrollment.

You can clearly hear one of the picketers shouting 'faggots' at the two in the vehicle. Bigot on the college payroll? If so, I don't want that person working for Fleming or anywhere in this city for that matter. Both sides acted wrong in that video, but the picketers are still acting in the wrong in my opinion. People have a right to use the road and students have a right to attend their school. This is a clear example that this is getting way out of hand.

If you hate unions, you aren't in one.
If you think that your life is unaffected by unions because you are not in one, you're uneducated.
When the weekend rolls around and you have 2 days off to relax or party whatever you do, thank unions.
When you get sick and can't come to work one day and you don't get fired, thank unions.
If you make minimum wage, thank unions.
When you get paid for a stat holiday, thank unions.
When you work somewhere that has benefits, thank unions.
If you drive on a road, or drive a car at all, thank unions.
If you didn't have to have a job before you were 10 years old, thank unions.
If you appreciate the labour laws that exist, thank unions.

Oh...we know who it is...trust me!!! And to those that even remotely think this is ok...you should be charged right along with the driver!!!! Seriously whether you agree with the strike or NOT...they are...you are...a menace to society!!!!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDarlene

Whether you agree with the strike or not....I think we can all agree that this was just a stupid, stupid, STUPID thing to do! Wouldn't have
been so funny if the driver killed someone now, would it? I'm sure he's quaking in his big boy boots right now, waiting for that knock
on the door from Peterborough's finest.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJD

True, very stupid thing for these two students to pull. However I don't agree with the picketers blocking students entrance into the school. 1 to 2 hour wait... Yikes...

When I was in college a few years back at Loyalist College the teachers went on strike. If anyone wanted in the school they were allowed in. I believe, at least at that college, that the teachers were allowed to picket at the entrance but not allowed (or at least had the common sense to agree) to block the road ways.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRyan

The driver should not have done that, but the strikers should not be allowed to be on the road blocking traffic. What if someone was hit? I'll bet the strikers would be told to stay off the road. Get off the damn road and maybe stuff like this won't happen.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMe

To Ryan and Me.

Faculty went on strike a few years ago and they did the exact same thing in the exact same place. There were delays then also.
They were not on the road. They were on the driveway. The driveway is on College property. The employees are conducting a perfectly legal function.
If someone was hit the driver of the car, who has since been charged, would have further charges against him.

Don't behave like an idiot. Anywhere. Anytime. It just makes sense.

Weren't classes cancelled during the faculty strike?

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJD

I applaud these people. Having to wait 1-2 hours just to go to class we pay thousands of dollars for is ridiculous. They want support, but theyre going about it the wrong way. Their attacking the people that are the reason they have a job in the first place. They have no backbone and are only doing as the union says. A striker had stated to me that if i have an issue go to the office. i REFUSE to do the dirty work for them. They will get an earful day in day out and recieve NO support from the student body. Im sure if we didnt have to wait 1-2 hrs to get in wed be WAY less frustrated. The strikers jump infront of your car and act very inappropriate, its almost as if theyre taunting us. Unions are about as useless as these strikers. They're butting heads with a student body of over 3,000. I suggest they get a bit of a change of attitude towards us. let 5 cars through hold up for 60 seconds then let 5 more in. they might get more a positive response. I see brand new audis, fords, hyundais to name a few, cars worth about 50 grand and they want more money. Give your heads a shake, your greedy and disgusting, 90% of them sit on their asses anyways, id love to get 35 bucks an hour to sit on my ass. so listen up strikers you want student support, lose the attitude and dont make us wait so long and MAYBE we will all be on the same page.

Uh, I think some of the overly angry commenters are confused about the inner-workings of the Canadian labour force. You need to read some more and then come back and post something intelligent for us to read.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFreddy

Um Freddy its gone past canadian labour force when students are effected. think you need to do a wee bit more investigating before you throw such a comment out there. Like to see you wait for 1-2 hrs when you have to be somewhere, then have to talk to the person whos held you up. lets see how graceful your words would be. The strikers are picking one hell of a battle

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSTUDENTSCOMEFIRST

Road or driveway, doesn't matter. Those students aren't the one deciding the contract. Why are they attempting to piss off the wrong people? Sure, I guess they're getting attention in general, but still. If I had a 2 hour wait to get to a 2 hour class I'd have no issue NOT backing these people in their strike. However, all that being said, I don't believe what these people did to be right. Given the choice between ramming the line and waiting, I choose waiting.

And to the comment about classes being cancelled when faculty were on strike, this is true. However I worked in the computer lab at the time and students still depended on the lab.

In the end, let's just hope this strike ends soon for the students sake.

LUUUUUUUUULLLLLLZZZZZZ!

September 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJohn Hancock

I agree that racing through the picket line was a stupid thing to do. Thankfully nobody was hurt this time.

That being said, this strike is just getting out of hand. Intentionally or not, the students are being used as pawns in this mess. We pay the price. You keep telling me you're fighting for the students rights. Well let us fight for our own rights. You worry about yours. Making students wait as long as we have been, is doing nothing but aggravating the situation. I understand having your right to express your position in the strike and whatnot, BUT I've had not one person talk the whole 3minutes I've been held up. One gentleman got to about 2minutes, and I still had an additional 1 minute wait. Do you think I'm happy sitting there with my car idling, twiddling my thumbs and looking at the trees and people walking infront of me?

If the staff wants to strike, that's their prerogative. But unnecessarily holding me up, moving the picket start time to earlier in the day, and other nonsense, only makes me feel like walking up to management and telling them to offer less than they did in previous bargaining agreements. You are not gaining support with these tactics.

They are losing the support of students and the community with this. You are already affecting our classes. Stop affecting our abilities to such an extreme to get into the school. The further this goes on, the more it proves that the school runs without you.

September 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterM

This has gotten utterly out of control!! I pay an absolutely astounding amount of money per year to have an education that lives up to Canadian standard. I am now missing classes, am constantly harassed and starting to get VERY irritated.... If at any time I did support the workers, they have blown that support out of the water. I have an idea how about you start to pay my tuition and I will gladly take your job ... OH and did I mention I'll take it for a dollar less an hour. GROW UP SUPPORT STAFF YOUR BURNING BRIDGES FAST, without students you wouldn't even have a job so why are you making US suffer? I believe we as citizens have very right to be in a union as well as strike for what we believe in but when you directly affect other lives in a negative way you are going too far!
