Community Dialogue on Accessibility and Inclusion

Maryam Monsef, Member of Parliament for Peterborough-Kawartha, his hosting a community dialogue to gather input on the accessibility legislation being developed by the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities. The dialogue will also inform a more inclusive approach to the delivery of local services to constituents of Peterborough-Kawartha.

Time: 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM

Location: Mark Street United Church, 90 Hunter Street East, Peterborough

This dialogue is be a participatory event, and those in attendance will be asked to share their thoughts on the following questions:

·         What are some examples of when you have felt included and fully able to participate in our community?

·         What activities or opportunities are you unable to participate in? What prevents your participation?

·         What issues or barriers should the law cover?

·         What is the best way to get people and organizations to follow the law?

·         How can the government raise awareness, change attitudes and show leadership to increase inclusion, participation and equality of opportunity?

All residents of Peterborough-Kawartha are welcome to attend. Both locations are wheelchair accessible with free parking. The Evinrude Centre is on the #7, #8 and #12 bus routes and Mark Street United Church is on the #9 and #11 bus routes. If you would like to arrange transportion with the Handi-Van, please call Peterborough Transit early to book a spot:  705-745-5801.

For those who need hearing accommodations, CART services (captioning) will be provided at both sessions. ASL interpretation has been confirmed for the Friday afternoon session at Mark Street United Church and will be confirmed for the Thursday evening session at the Evinrude Centre, if interpreters are available. If you require CART or ASL, please let us know in your registration.

Those who are unable to join in person are invited to send an email with their thoughts on the questions above to MP Monsef at Maryam.Monsef@parl.gc.ca no later than Wednesday, January 25, 2017.

Residents of Peterborough-Kawartha are also encouraged to participate in the online consultation or by submitting feedback to the Office for Disability Issues before February 2017. The questionnaire and discussion guide are available in text, American Sign Language, and audio. Feedback can be submitted online, by hard copy, and through video or audio submissions.
