National Aboriginal Day Celebrations with Miawpukek First Nation

The Canadian Canoe Museum is honoured to welcome Sagamaw Mi'sel Joe and members of Miawpukek First Nation from Newfoundland for National Aboriginal Day celebrations at the Canadian Canoe Museum. 

Free admission all day! 

9:30-10:00 Opening Ceremony: Welcome from Chief Phyllis Williams (Curve Lake), Chief Mi'sel Joe (Miawpukek), and others. Honour and Reconciliation songs performed by Sipuji'j Drummers and Eastern Owl. 

10:30-2:00 Participatory workshops and demonstrations for school groups and the public with artists and artisans from Miawpukek First Nation. Canoe building, traditional food, Mi'kmaw language, drumming and song. 

Please note: we have registered our maximum number of school groups for this event.

3:30-5:00 Ceremonial paddle of the birch bark canoe made by Mi'kmaw master builders and youth, which is to be presented to the Canadian Canoe Museum.  The public is invited to join this paddling experience - bring your own canoe or contact Stacey.arppe@canoemuseum.ca to register for a (free) space in our Voyageur Canoe. Location: Peterborough Lift Lock. 

6:00-8:00 Workshops, demonstrations and performance with  Miawpukek First Nation singers, drummers, dancers and canoe builders. Light refreshments will be served. Free.
