Following today’s press conference , The Canadian Mental Health Association, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (C.M.H.A. H.K.P.R.) is pleased to announce details for the Brent Upper Memorial Ball Tournament, in memory of Brent “Ripper” Upper and Jake “Steamtrain” Stanley. The tournament will take place on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at the Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre, located at 88 Alma Street, Norwood, Ontario.
The friends and family of Brent Upper, a local man who tragically is one of the many young people who lost their life in the past year to the opioid crisis, have organized the tournament. Brent’s friend, Jake Stanley, another promising young local man, lost his life to suicide in 2015. Sheri Erickson, Brent’s Mom, decided she wanted to host this tournament in their memories to help bring awareness to the ongoing need for supports for young people battling mental health and addictions and to provide funding that will stay local, to help others.
Born and raised in Lakefield, Brent was very involved in local sports. Therefore, one third of the funds raised at the tournament will be directed to the Lakefield Chief’s, Brent’s home team, while the remaining proceeds will be directed to two C.M.H.A. H.K.P.R endeavors, Lynx, an early psychosis program for youth and Team55 Let’s Tackle Suicide Prevention.
Through an amazing family and friend’s network, registration is now closed for the tournament, with 20 teams confirmed. However, there are still many ways for the community to support this amazing event. Donations can be made on-line to the Brent Upper Memorial Ball Tournament at http://cmhahkpr.ca/get-involved/donate/ or you can download a pledge sheet at http://cmhahkpr.ca/events/brent-upper-memorial-ball-tournament/ Also, as in any great sporting event, fans are always welcome! The first pitch will be thrown at 8:00 a.m. There will be a BBQ lunch from 11-1, with remarks from family at 1:00 p.m. A 50/50 draw and other prizes will be awarded at 3:00.
