Canadian Canoe Museum March Break Camp

Monday March 11th

Mini Paddle Painting ($18)
Monday March 11th 9:30-12 Age 6+
Inspired by an exploration of the paddles in our collection from around the world, kids will design and paint their own unique 14-inch (35 cm) basswood paddle to take home.


Arctic Adventures ($18)
Monday March 11th 12:30-3 Age 6+
We start off the program with a trip to our Origins gallery. Kids get a chance to learn about where the tradition of soapstone carving originates; handle some materials and tools of the North; then get a sneak peak, at some beautiful soapstone carvings from the collection. Sing songs, play Traditional Inuit games, then carve your own soap stone sculpture to take home.

Tuesday March 12th

Limberjacks ($60)
Tuesday March 12th 9:30-3 Age 8+
This program is a kid favourite! Build your own limberjack toy from scratch, and give him/her a costume, hair, and more. Woodworking, fabric arts and music all in one program. Kids and limberjacks alike will be tapping their toes by the end of this fun filled day!

Wednesday March 13th

Thursday March 14th

Wanigans ($48)
Thursday March 14th 9:30-3 Age 8+
Try your hand at woodworking and create a mini-version of a wanigan (a traditional canoe tripping equipment box with its own unique carrying system). Explore its origins and variations as you hunt through the museum to find the pieces you need to build your wanigan. Our patient and experienced staff will guide participants in a hands-on building experience. Spend the afternoon adding a game function to your wanigan and painting it with your own design. Finish up the afternoon with baking a traditional wanigan treat!

Friday March 15th

2ft Paddle Carving ($35)
Friday March 15th 9:30-2 Age 9+
Carve a 24” (61cm) paddle out of basswood! Using a traditional spoke shave tool, students learn the woodworking techniques to take their rough blank to a smoothly-sanded, finished paddle. Participants have a beautiful souvenir to take home and treasure. as well as an introduction to all the skills necessary to make a full-size paddle in the future.
