Alex & Jen: The Amazing Story Behind A Sweet Marriage Proposal On The Trent University Bridge

Alex Yuan met Jen Boon in his second year (2012) at Trent University. Jen was in Queens’ concurrent education program at Trent studying English and hoping to be a teacher. Alex—an international student from China—was in Economics. It was love at first sight, Alex says.

They graduated from Trent University together in summer 2015. Jen went on to finish her teacher program at Queen’s University in Kingston, and Alex started his career with TD Direct Investing soon after.

The Trent Bridge has been a huge part of their life

Trent University has been a very special place for both of them—especially the bridge.

"In addition to being the spot we crossed literally hundreds of times for class in the past four years, the bridge also is symbolic in that it represents the connection we have made together," Alex tells PTBOCanada. "I was an international student from China, Jen is Canadian. We were born and raised in different countries—speaking different languages—but like Trent, the bridge connected us. And more than ever in this world right now, we need to build more bridges to bring people together, not walls and fences that separate us."

Graduation Day: 2015

Here is how the romantic wedding proposal went down on the morning of December 10th...

"It was a cold day I chose to propose but it couldn’t have been more perfect—the Canadian Way," Alex tells PTBOCanada. "I planned it out with two of my best friends, Michael and Sam, throughout the week. We went through the entire thing and did a mock proposal the day before, just to make sure we have the right camera angel and timing."
