Parks Canada Invites the Community to Celebrate Canada Day With the Trent-Severn Waterway

This Canada Day, Parks Canada is welcoming visitors to celebrate the natural heritage of Canada on the Trent-Severn Waterway by offering free lockage for recreational boaters on July 1.

Trent Severn Lockage And Mooring Permits On Sale Until March 31

Parks Canada is offering discounted prices to boaters that purchase their lockage and mooring permits before March 31.

Those that wish to travel through the Trent Severn Waterway this year must purchase a 2022 Lockage and/or Mooring Permit.

Permits are priced dependent on the footage of the boat.

A lockage and mooring package, which Includes one seasonal lockage and one seasonal mooring permit for the same boat will cost $17 per foot. If purchased after March 31 it will cost $20 per foot.

A seasonal lockage permit can be purchased for $7.60 per foot until March 31, $9.50 per foot after that. A seasonal lockage permit for a canoe or kayak is available for $4.75 per foot until March 31, or $9.50 after that.

Free Fishing For Ontario From July 3 to 11

Summer is here and to celebrate, the Ontario government is allowing families to fish for free from July 3 to July 11.

“Fishing is a time-honoured tradition and terrific way for families to spend time together,” says Greg Rickford, Minister of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry in a media release. “I hope everyone in Ontario is able to head down to a lake or river and take part in free fishing week this year.”

For the rest of the year, anyone between 18 and 65 has to have an outdoors card and a fishing license though veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members residing in Ontario are exempt.

Those taking part in this initiative are reminded to respect the public health regulations of step two of its reopening plan including outdoor gathering restrictions.

While you will not require any license to fish at these times, anglers still must follow conservation licence catch limits, obey size limits and sanctuaries and follow all other fishing regulations and rules.

Due To Unsafe Boating Conditions Parks Canada Is Delaying Start Of Navigation Season

Due to unsafe boating conditions, Parks Canada is delaying the start of the 2019 navigation season for the Trent-Severn Waterway until Friday, May 24th.

Above normal snowpack in some areas and significant precipitation system-wide have resulted in extreme high water levels and flows throughout the Trent-Severn Waterway, which causes unsafe boating conditions.

Until then, the Trent-Severn Waterway will remain closed to all boat traffic and all forms of water-based activities are discouraged. This closure will ensure boater safety, and help to mitigate shoreline erosion and property damage experienced by local residents and businesses.

During this week, Parks Canada will diligently continue to make adjustments to water flows in order to restore safe conditions in preparation for the navigation season.

The public are welcome to continue to enjoy the canals' lock stations, which will be fully open to land-based visitors starting May 17th, and lock staff will be on hand to welcome them. 

Visitors are encouraged to always exercise caution around water. This is especially important now with elevated water levels and flows.

Blast From The Past: Old Boat Motors Designed At Outboard Marine On Display At Little Lake

Outboard Marine, which once employed about 2,000 employees in Peterborough before closing in the Nineties, was famous for, among many other things, producing Johnson and Evinrude engines.

Some of those were on display on Saturday (September 16th) on the shores of Little Lake at a classic boat display.

All the motor logo designs pictured throughout the post were done by George Elliott, the renowned local artist and illustrator who worked at Outboard Marine as a graphic designer in the '60s, '70s and '80s before leaving to commit himself full time to his art vocation. (George is the father of our Brand Strategist, Aaron Elliott.)

George was featured (see below, bottom left) in an old dealer publicaton called Pioneer Chips.

Many of our readers may recall these classic old designs, and perhaps might even be using these motors now.

"To see my Dad's designs still around and being cherished after decades is incredible to witness," Aaron says. "It's neat to see they live on."

Trent-Severn Waterway To Open for Navigation In Stages Starting Friday, May 26th

The Trent-Severn Waterway 2017 Navigation Season will open in stages starting on Friday, May 26th.

Increased precipitation over the past weekend coupled with forecasted rainfall has created the requirement for additional time to reduce water levels and flows to a point that ensures safe boating conditions across the system.

As of May 26th, locks 28 Burleigh Falls to 42 Couchiching will be open to boat traffic. All other lock stations will be open to land-based visitation but closed to boat traffic.

This staged opening of the Waterway will most importantly protect boater safety, and help to prevent further shoreline erosion and property damage experienced by local residents and businesses. Parks Canada will continue to work diligently to open the entire system for navigation and will open individual lock stations in stages as soon as it safe to do so. 

All visitors are encouraged to exercise extra caution now with water flows less predictable and stable than during regular navigation season.
