The win gave the Lakers a record 27th MSL title (fourth consecutive) in front of over 3,500 fans in attendance.

The team will battle for a fourth straight Mann Cup title as they take on the champion Langley Thunder of the Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) beginning on Sep. 9.

The Lakers had a rough start, allowing a hat trick from former National Lacrosse League number one overall pick Lyle Thompson to make it 3-1. The Six Nations’ attacker returned to the lineup last Wednesday in game four, scoring two goals in his return.

Peterborough regained steam as Thomas Hoggarth made a highlight-reel goal with a behind-the-back bouncing shot that beat the Chiefs’ goalie Doug Jamieson. Joe Resetarits tied things up 34 seconds later to tie the game at three.

The Lakers tried to take the lead but had a pass deflect off a Six Nations play that resulted in a two-on-zero breakaway goal for Joey Cupido to make it 4-3 after the first period.

The second was evenly contested for both teams as each squad scored three goals apiece. Thompson scored his fourth goal of the game.

Hoggarth tallied a second goal intercepting a pass while Six Nations was trying to leave the offensive zone. He immediately scored his second of the game. Resetarits scored his second as well and Lakers’ Shawn Evans also got on the scoreboard with his first of the game for Peterborough.

The Lakers kept their poise in the third period ringing off four goals while only allowing one. Holden Cattoni opened the scoring for Peterborough in the third to tie the game at seven. Resetarits gave his team the first lead of the night scoring two and a half minutes after Cattoni’s goal to make it 8-7 for Peterborough.

While the Lakers let in a goal from Six Nations’ Austin Staats, Resetarits struck back with a powerplay goal (his fourth), nine seconds in to reclaim the lead. Evans gave the team an insurance marker, scoring with 2:23 left in the game and also killed off the dying seconds of the game to give Peterborough the win.
