Dr. J's Hosting Viewing Party For Douro's Cody Crowley's Vegas Bout On Saturday Night

Ahead of Douro boxer Cody Crowley’s biggest fight in Las Vegas, boxing fans can view his fight at Dr. J’s BBQ & Brews viewing party and aid his ‘55 for Team 55’ fundraiser on Saturday night.

The viewing party’s $20 admission fee goes toward Team 55: Let’s Tackle Suicide Awareness and the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Assertive Outreach for Suicide Prevention program.

Crowley has a 21-0 record with nine knockouts. He is fighting Abel Ramos in the Showtime pay-per-view at a Premier Boxing Champions event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. A Team 55 patch is being worn on his trunks for the fight.

Crowley dedicated his fight to his late father Jim Crowley who ended his own life last year. Cody pledged to raise $55,000 for Team 55. There was $18,840 already raised from a raffle with the grand prize of ringside tickets, flight and accommodation to see the fight.

Addison Brown, owner of Dr. J’s BBQ and Brews, has been Cody’s friend for the past eight years and is proud to support him in whatever way possible.

“When he was looking for sponsorships throughout Peterborough, I reached out to him saying ‘I’ve been following you and growing up as an athlete, I’ve had a lot of support with the community and I wanted to sponsor you for the next fight,’” explained Brown. “We grew and developed a relationship. He helped me when I was going through some things about my brother and I did with his father.”

Cody spoke at a Team 55 Friday Night Lights fundraiser in 2017 that sparked a friendship with Dave Pogue, Team 55 founder who lost his son Mitchell to suicide.

“Cody’s commitment to fundraising in the name of his father, through his international boxing platform not only is commendable but amazing, as far as we are concerned at Team 55,” he said. “Since 2017, Cody has been a great supporter of our mental health and suicide awareness programs and for him to commit to raising $55,000 for Team 55 this year will help keep our Assertive Outreach for Suicide Prevention program running for another year and a half.”

The fundraising raffle occurred last Wednesday that featured prizes such as dinner for Dr. J’s, WBC-signed gloves from boxing legends such as Julio Cesar Chavez, Roberto Duran, Gerry Cooney, a One With Life tequila package and a grand prize for a round-trip flight, accommodations and ringside seats to see Cody’s fight.

“Cody Crowley, James Julie Crowley and Kevin Williams really did something amazing by raising $18,840 in just two weeks with help from friends and family,” said Addison Brown, Dr. J’s owner.

Crowley announced the fundraiser in honour of his late father who passed away last year ahead of his 22nd professional fight on March 25 in Las Vegas. The 21-0-0 Crowley is scheduled to box Abel Ramos in a 12-round World Boxing Council (WBC) title elimination fight at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.

The proceeds are going towards the Assertive Outreach Suicide Prevention program run by the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation and Canadian Mental Health Association.

The 21-0-0 Crowley is scheduled to box Abel Ramos in a 12-round World Boxing Council (WBC) title elimination fight at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. The Douro boxer has dedicated the fight to honour his late father Jim Crowley who passed away last year.

Raffle tickets are available at Dr. J’s with a limited amount left with the deadline at 6 p.m. Wednesday and the draw at 7 p.m. Cody will make a virtual appearance at the drawing to talk about his upcoming fight and the fundraiser according to Dr. J’s owner Addison Brown.

The two have been friends for roughly eight years and have supported each other through similar times.

Petes hockey fans enjoyed dining with their favourite players Tuesday afternoon at Dr. J’s BBQ and Brews Meet, Greet and Eat with the Peterborough Petes event. Lakefield Musician's Band 'Live Shiny Tunes' To Rock New Years at Dr. J's BBQ & Brews

Rock out and ring in 2023 with Michael Beauclerc and Live Shiny Tunes at Dr. J's BBQ & Brews New Year’s event on Dec. 31.

Formed in November, the band features the iconic tunes of the 90s and the musical stylings of many local names. Attendees can rock out with Peterborough songbird SJ Riley, Yamaha celebrity percussion clinician Michael Beauclerc and the introspective delights of the McManus brothers; Devin on guitar and Dawson on bass.

“(I’m) beyond excited to announce I’ve joined an amazing roster of musicians to bring you Live Shiny Tunes,” said SJ Riley in a Facebook post.

The band’s founder Michael Beauclerc says that the show will be great for the 35 to 50 aged crowd and those who enjoyed MuchMusic’s earlier rock albums ‘Big Shiny Tunes.’

“Live Shiny Tunes is an idea that I’ve had for a number of years,” said Beauclerc. “We had our first-ever rehearsal in November and Dr. J’s will be our first, debut show.”

The professional musician was gifted his first drum set at the age of three. By the time he was in high school, he was a Canadian champion snare drummer, performing at local bars in Peterborough and going on to major in percussion and vocal at Cambrian College.

“(Music) is something I’ve always done, it’s what I was always going to do and going to be,” said Beauclerc. “That’s why I wanted to school for it so I would get more opportunities.”

The drummer, hand percussionist and singer is an artist/clinician for Yamaha Percussion, Vic Firth sticks & Mallets, SABIAN cymbals and REMO. He is the band leader of ‘The Bowie Lives: A David Bowie Spectacular Experience’ and the percussion head of the St. Michael’s College School Drumline in Toronto, the Oak Ridge Percussion in Colborne, Trinity College School Drumline in Port Hope and a consultant/composer for several other scholastic drumlines.

On top of his music, Beauclerc is the editor-in-chief of Drumline Magazine and has written novels used by Canadian drumlines and marching percussion instructors.

Live Shiny Tunes will be at Dr. J’s (282 Alymer St. N) starting at 9 p.m.

“This music was the biggest music of the late nineties and early 2000’s, (this) is the music that I played in college,” says Beauclerc. “It’s going to be Lenny Kravitz, The Odds, The Goo Goo Dolls, Garbage and more. It’s a big mix.”

Santa Claus To Appear At Dr. J's To Fundraise For SickKids Hospital On Dec. 18

Santa Claus is coming to Dr. J’s BBQ & Brews for to have his picture taken for a meet and greet in a charity fundraiser for SickKids Toronto on Dec. 18 announced on Thursday.

Last year, Dr. J’s ran the same event in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association. They chose SickKids as the recipient of all fundraising proceeds as it holds sentimental value to owner Addison Brown and his family.

“This year, we have chosen a charity very close to our hearts, and one our family will soon get to know all too well,” he explained. “You may have heard that the Brown family will be expanding with two new little members, one of whom will be needing a little extra attention from the wonderful team at SickKids Toronto.”

“We feel so fortunate to have such wonderful care available to us and we are looking forward to giving back this Christmas,” said Addison.

Santa is appearing from noon until 6 p.m. for photo opportunities with a five-dollar donation. Gift wrapping is also available from Dec. 16-18 with any monetary donation.

Dr. J's Is Hosting Gift Wrapping Weekend And Raising Funds For Mental Health

Dr. J’s BBQ and Brews will be offering gift wrapping from Friday to Sunday to support Tackle 55 Suicide Awareness and the Canadian Mental Health Association.

“All the funds will go to the Canadian Mental Health Association in memory of Dan Bois, who was one of my best friends,” said owner Addison Brown. “Unfortunately he struggled with mental illness, and he couldn’t fight it.”

Those interested in participating can bring any and all Christmas gifts to Dr. J’s (282 Aylmer St N) and donate a minimum of $20. 100 per cent of the proceeds will be donated.

This is the second fundraiser Dr. J’s will host this holiday season. On Dec. 5 Santa Claus paid a visit to the restaurant, and for $5 guests could take their photo with him.

Proceeds from that event were donated to Kawartha Food Share.

Local Entrepreneurs' Hot Sauce Ignites Peterborough's Taste Buds

Too hot? Too bad! No Refund Hot Sauce has made its way into Peterborough made by Dr. J’s BBQ & Brews and Chemong Lodge co-owner Adam Brown.

After being developed during Adam’s restauranteur career in Toronto, the hot sauce has found its way into Peterborough retailers such as One Fine Foods, Primal Cuts, Sweet Beast Butcher Shop, Flannigan’s and Brown’s businesses.

The brand features seven different hot sauces and three mayos, featuring their suicide sauces called “Adam’s” and “4-Alarm”.

The sauce was developed 10 years ago when Adam’s original restaurant, “The Fox and the Fiddle” in Toronto for their chicken wings; a food Adam is a huge fan of. That spawned the idea of having a suicide sauce.

“If you’re going to have great wings, you got to have a great ‘sui’ sauce,” said Adam.

The “No Refund” name was inspired by a questionable customer experience with the sauce.”

“We had some customer send it back saying it was too hot,” said Adam. “We asked ourselves, ‘Can you send back suicide wings?’”

Brown’s friends suggested bottling the suicide sauce and selling it to local distributors. He opted to take that advice after customers who were strangers gave him the same feedback.

“We had friends saying we should bottle the sauce,” said Adam. “Once we kept hearing customers who were outside of our friendship circle saying the same thing, we heard it enough times and said why don’t we explore this a bit?”

With how flexible hot sauce recipes can be, the possibilities are endless for new products in the future.

“We played with it a lot. We’re always experimenting with peppers and flavours,” “All of our sauces are inspired regionally from all over the world. Diverse in heat and flavour.”
