Norwood Agricultural Society Names Fair Ambassador Ahead Of Annual Norwood Fair

Emma Harding has been crowned the 2022 Norwood Fair Ambassador, after the Ambassador Competition hosted on Sunday at the Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre.

Harding competed in a group of six young women from the Norwood area.

On Sunday, each competitor was interviewed by a panel of three judges, delivered a speech about the fair and answered an impromptu question in front of an audience.

Harding is a student at Norwood District High School and works as an Administrative Assistant at McCloskeys International. She is sponsored by The Norwood Legion, Branch 300.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Norwood Fair Ambassador program. When it began, the winner was crowned Norwood Fair Queen, though as years went by the name was changed.

Marcia Warr was the first Norwood Fair Queen in 1947.

This year, Harding will receive the crown from Ashley Vanderhorst who was crowned during the 2019-2020 season. Because of COVID-19 there was no competition for 2020-2022.

As Ambassador, Harding will assist in various tasks during the fair weekend like helping at the School Fair and Homecraft Buildings, handing out ribbons at various competitions throughout the weekend, riding on the Ambassador float in the parade on Saturday , attending the Opening Ceremonies and representing her sponsor throughout the fair grounds.

Before and after the fair weekend, the Ambassador will also represent the Norwood Fair at community event like the Santa Claus parade.

Harding will also attend the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS) Convention held in Toronto in February and compete in the Canadian National Exhibition Ambassador of the Fairs Competition in Toronto in August.

The Norwood Fair will take place October 8 - 10, 2022.

Norwood Fair Announces Winners Of First Ever Wheat Competition

This year, in it’s 154th year, the Norwood Fair has added a new category for local farmers to enter. Winners of the wheat competition were announced earlier this week.

After a two year hiatus due to COVID-19 the Norwood Fair is slated to run Thanksgiving Weekend, October 8 - 10.

This year for the first time the committee added a ‘wheat’ competition for farmers to enter.

Due to wheat season ending before the fair runs winners have already been announced.

A total of ten farmers entered their wheat fields into the contest.

The judge was Don Oliver from Peterborough who said that the crops were “excellent with a very good yield potential.” Only ten points separated first place from last.

First place was a tie shared by Bob Sedgwick and Dave Webster with a score of 89 points each, Second place was also a tie shared by James Buck and Tim Shearer with a score of 88 points each.

Third place was another tie shared by Todd Payne and Scott Toms with 87 points each.

Murray Lobb finished with a single score of 83 points, followed by Crovalley Farms with 82 points, Gord Tomlinson with 80 points and Will Vanderhorst with a very respectable 70 points.

As the fair approaches and crops are yielded results from different competitions will continue to be announced.

Norwood Fair Will Return In 2022 After Two Years Of Cancellations

After two years of cancellations due to COVID-19 The Norwood Fair will return Oct. 8 - 10.

The beloved annual event that celebrated it’s 150th anniversary in 2018 was forced to take a pause for the first time since World War Two when the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020.

In a post on their website organizers note that planning is already well under way for the return of the fair.

The Norwood Fair offers the community friendly competition, a place to gather and a traditional fall fair weekend.

The website highlights evens like antique tractor pulls, animal exhibits, horse and pony events, an antique car show, craft and crop exhibits and so much more.

2022 Fair books, that outline guidelines for entering produce, livestock, homecraft or other projects into competitions have not yet been finalized. The 2019 Prize Book and School Prize Book can be viewed on the Norwood Fair website until more recent ones are available.

Hit the Road and Celebrate the Harvest Season with Norwood's Scarecrow Roadshow

The Township of Asphodel-Norwood is celebrating Thanksgiving with their third annual Scarecrow Roadshow, from Friday - Tuesday.

About 25 community members in Norwood and surrounding areas have decorated their lawns and properties with scarecrows to celebrate Thanksgiving.

“It’s been very well received, people have had a lot of fun creating their displays,” said Prudence Cameron-Jordan. “There’s lots of people that are eager to get out on the road and see all of the displays.”

The township has compiled an interactive map that invites those interested to tour the town and enjoy the 2021 Scarecrow Roadshow.

There is also a virtual version of the Scarecrow Roadshow, where visitors can click on each location and view the display.

The Scarecrow show was started in 2019 by the Asphodel Cultural and Heritage Committee, but the interactive map charting locations of displays was introduced in 2020, after the Norwood Fair was cancelled due to COVID-19.

“Having at least something fall-themed for residents to take part in was very very important to us,” said Asphodel-Norwood CAO Candice White.

The Norwood Fair has been in operation for over 150 years, and draws in tens of thousands of visitors each year, according to White.

The only other time the Norwood Fair was cancelled was in 1939, when World War II began— it returned eight years later in 1947.

Those that have a registered display in the 2021 Scarecrow Roadshow will be entered win a Thanksgiving themed goodie platter and gift card from Sweetheart's Bakery, a new bakery located in Norwood. The draw will take place on Tuesday.

The Norwood Fair Is Celebrating Its 151st Year

The Norwood Fair has always been a great family tradition at Thanksgiving, going strong since 1868!

This year marks its 151st year, and the theme is “Scarecrows and Fence Rows” for the fair, which runs October 12th, 13th and 14th. Organizers are looking forward to seeing lots of creation “on theme” entries—especially in their Homecraft and School Fair divisions.

So if you're looking for something to do with the kids and in-laws before you get your turkey on, get your herd on with family and friends!
