The Art School of Peterborough Earns First-Place Honours in DBIA's Holiday Window Contest

The Art School of Peterborough has earned the title of first place for the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA) annual Downtown Holiday Window Contest announced on Wednesday.

This year’s theme was ‘Winter Wonderland’ that was launched on Nov. 14 in conjunction with DBIA’s Holiday Shopping Passports.

Raine Knudsen, The Art School of Peterborough receptionist released the following statement after being declared the winner:

"The Art School of Peterborough is humbled to win 1st place in the 2022 Holiday Window Contest! Thank you so much to everyone who has shown their support; to our students, our instructors and coworkers, our neighbours, and our local Peterborough community.

This year, we were inspired to create a woodland scene, with our favourite lovable forest creatures all joyfully hand-drawn with care. Just like a snowflake, the Peterborough community is extraordinary in every way, you are one of a kind, a fantastic individual, an exceptional find.

In celebration of the season, all visitors who happen to stop by the Art School will be treated to a hand-made ceramic snowflake ornament crafted by our talented art students. 

Thanks Peterborough, for all the support and love you’ve shown us, and so many other local businesses and non-profits this holiday season. The Art School wishes everyone a bright and beautiful winter holiday and happy new year!” 

This year’s winners are: 

  • 1st place — The Art School of Peterborough, 174A Charlotte St.

  • 2nd Place — Fork It, 288 Charlotte St.

  • 3rd Place — The Capital PTBO 370 George St.

The top three winners received $1,000, $500 and $300 for their winning windows. Locals voted online for their top three holiday window displays throughout the contest period from Nov. 14 to Dec. 5.  

“We love seeing our shop owners put their own creative spin on the holidays with our Holiday Window Contest. It really sets the tone of the season and brings a lot of charm into our historic downtown shopping district,” said Terry Guiel, DBIA executive director. “It’s incredible to see the community support our small businesses throughout the competition. This season we saw a record-breaking number of votes through our online voting portal with over 3000 votes cast.”

The Boro Announces Wild Rock Outfitters As Holiday Window Contest Winner

The Boro announced on Wednesday that Wild Rock Outfitters placed first in their annual Holiday Window Contest.

“This holiday season has been all about community, getting outdoors, and supporting each other. Our staff brought their fabulous ideas and talents together to create a beautiful expression of just that, and we're so happy they'll be rewarded for their efforts. We are so grateful to have a team filled with so much enthusiasm, skill, and love,” said Tori Silvera, Wild Rock General Manager. “Thanks Peterborough, and have a wonderful holiday, whatever you're celebrating."

This year’s winners are:

1st place — Wild Rock Outfitters, 169 Charlotte Street

2nd Place — Statement House, 378 Water Street

3rd Place — Green Street, Shop, 237 George Street

The top three winners will be receiving $1,000, $500, and $200 for their winning windows. Locals voted online for their top three holiday window displays throughout the contest period from November 19 to December 6.

“It feels very festive downtown right now thanks to the creativity of our brilliant shop owners. This year’s theme was Holiday Cheer and our businesses curated wonderfully cheery holiday window displays this season,” said Terry Guiel, DBIA Executive Director. “It’s incredible to see the community rally behind our small businesses. Over 2,400 votes were cast throughout the contest, and we are just blown away by the local enthusiasm for this program.”

One Local Business Will Win $1000 With The Boro's Holiday Window Contest

Downtown businesses are being given the chance to win up to $1,000 cash with The Boro’s Holiday Window Contest.

Over the past few weeks, merchants in the downtown area have been hard at work decking the halls and walls for a chance to win big at the 2021 Holiday Window Contest. The business that gets the most votes will receive a $1,000 cash prize with second and third receiving $500 and $200 respecitvely.

Judging will take place online at theboro.ca. Participants can vote for their top three windows each day throughout the contest period from Friday to Dec. 6. The theme for this year’s contest is “Holiday Cheer.”

“I love seeing our shop windows illuminated with lights and holiday decorations. Our merchants always create top-notch displays that bring a wonderful festive spirit into the downtown core,” said Terry Guiel, Executive Director of the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area. “This year we’ve mapped out some of the best hot chocolate spots so folks can bundle up and come experience the charm of our historic downtown shopping district while touring this year’s holiday displays.”

Participants can view the Holiday Windows from home online or take a downtown tour and cozy up with a hot chocolate along the way.

Voting for The Boro's Holiday Window Contest Opens on Friday

The Boro’s Holiday Window Contest is underway and voting will open on Friday.

Local businesses can enter their decorated window on The Boro’s website until Thursday.

Voting is open to community members and will be open from Friday until Dec. 6.

The first place window will receive $1,000, second place $500 and third place $300.

This year’s theme is “Holiday Cheer.”

Community members can vote from their homes by visiting the website or they can use the interactive map to take a tour of downtown.

The map highlights participating businesses as well as hot chocolate stops along the way.

Windows will be able to be seen online when voting opens.

The Holiday Window Contest In Downtown Peterborough Was A Merry Time

The Toy Shop of Peterborough has won the 2017 Holiday Window Contest in downtown Peterborough. The display at 176 Hunter Street West is full of colour and encompassed the Canadian theme, capturing the attention of the judges from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peterborough.
 
“We had a lot of fun decorating our display and incorporating the Canada 150 theme for the Holiday Window Contest,” says Jean Grant, owner of The Toy Shop, which will be donating the $300 grand prize to the Salvation Army Toy Drive.

“It’s great to see so many stores lit up and decorated with all things Canadian for the holiday season,” says Terry Guiel, Executive Director of the Downtown Business Improvement Area. “It was also a lot of fun hosting Big Brothers Big Sisters as our judges and seeing how excited the kids were to be a part of this."

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peterborough promotes the growth and development of at-risk children and youth in our community through the provision of mentoring programs with positive adult role models.

New Canadians Centre Youth Group To Judge Holiday Window Contest In Downtown Peterborough

Downtown is getting decorated for the holidays with the annual Holiday Window Contest. Judging will take place on Saturday, December 3rd, from noon to 2 pm.
 
This year, the Downtown Business Improvement Area is hosting the New Canadians Centre Youth Group to judge the Holiday Window Contest. The New Canadians Centre Youth Group is one of the many outreach opportunities designed to support newcomer youth for not only academic success, but to encourage social connections at school and within our community. The NCC Youth Group has grown this year from a small handful to almost 50 students!

“The Holiday Window Contest is always a lot of fun,” says DBIA Executive Director Terry Guiel. “Our businesses do an excellent job with some really creative displays and the kids enjoy being a part of it and getting a few treats from some downtown shops.”
 
The New Canadians Centre strives to empower immigrants and refugees to become full and equal members of Canadian society and to provide community leadership to ensure cultural integration in a welcoming community.
 
“We have a very diverse group of kids from all of the local high schools who are very interested in trying new things and experiencing as much as they can," says Jess Devlin, Settlement Workers in School Coordinator with the NCC. "The high school experience is not just about succeeding academically. It's about connecting with others, being involved and becoming engaged in what's happening in the community."
