Here's Peterborough's Shawn Evans & Cory Vitarelli Behind TSN SportsCentre Desk

BSTLqzECIAA9Fan.jpg

Cory Vitarelli and Shawn "Shawny" Evans sat behind the TSN SportsCentre desk today (August 22nd), where they were there to do an interview for the Top 20 Lacrosse Plays of 2013 which will air on TSN in the Fall (late September/early October). They are both born and raised in Peterborough and both play for the Lakers. Cory also plays pro for the Rochester Knighthawks, where his team just won their second Champion's Cup in a row. Shawny plays for the Calgary Roughnecks, where last season he set the Roughnecks single season record with 112 points and was named the league's MVP.  The coolest thing about Shawny right now though is what he's doing off the field; he and Lakers' teammate Brad Self co-founded Nationwide Lacrosse and they are currently travelling around teaching kids lacrosse at the grassroots level. Batman made a special appearance on Saturday (August 17th) at the 9th annual Dr. Shufelt's Kid's Triathalon at Beavermead Park. Ryan James was there and explains "there's always lots of helpful volunteers in the water to help the kids get in and navigate that part of the course, and this year there was an extra friendly and helpful Batman in an wet suit." James adds "he was very popular with the kids and did an outstanding job of engaging all the kids in the swimming—which can be an intimidating part of the event.”

Amazing: Peterborough Man Hits Hole In One Using Golf Ball In Honour Of His Late Brother

Marty's hole in one at Liftlock

Marty's hole in one at Liftlock

Friday, August 2nd, 2013 is a day Marty Silvestri will never forget. He made a hole in one at Liftlock Golf Club that day. "The funny thing is that this was my first round of the year," Marty tells us. But the story gets better, way better. And involves someone looking down on him from above. This will send chills down your spine. In his own words, let him tell it...

The magical ball

The magical ball

"I got a hole in one on hole #8 at Liftlock which is a par 3 135 yards.  The tee box is elevated so you are shooting downhill onto the green.  My buddy and I are both left handed and it was windy that day so I wasn’t quite sure which club to use. My friend Chris had decided to go with a 4 iron and I actually had my 8 iron out but switched to my 7 iron.

I stepped up and set my ball on the tee and gave it my best shot and well as soon as it left the tee it looked good. Honestly it had the perfect arch and it hit the green and two small bounces and it was in the cup. I let out a couple of loud cheers and high fived my friend Chris.

The crazy part is I think I actually had some help from above judging by the ball I used. The ball is from a tournament that my brothers' friends put on in his honour and to support The Cancer Society. The ball has the Kevin Silvestri Classic logo on it. My brother passed away 19 years ago after a two year battle with cancer. His friends ran a tournament for 15 years. The money raised from that tournament each year was donated to the Canadian Cancer Society as well as the Palliative care unit at the PRHC.  There is actually a room in the Palliative care unit which is named in honour of my brother. I have saved a few of the balls and from time to time I use one to play.

Golfers play golf for a lifetime and never experience the joy of a hole in one. I’m thankful I was able to experience the joy of a hole in one and share with my brother Kevin who I’m sure helped guide the ball a couple of extra yards into the hole."  —Marty Silvestri

What Should Peterborough Do About Its Arena Needs?

It's not easy to get ice time in Peterborough, the hockey capital of Canada. Thus, the City of Peterborough has begun an assessment of its arena needs, brought on in part by the potential closure of the outdated Northcrest Arena in the City's north end. This study will determine current needs and look out over the next 20 years in terms of the city's arena needs and population growth. The city will soon be announcing its project and its objectives, as well as announcing upcoming community input opportunities. But to get the puck rolling, what would you do? Retrofit Northcrest Arena? Build a new twin pad arena somewhere in the city? Build a sports complex to address many needs at once? Add your comments below.
