Overtime Hockey Company and Auto Connect Sales have opened a draw for anyone to attend their third annual Holiday Stars Camp taking place on Dec. 29 and 30.

The draw is for 70 players to come to the free camp with all ballots to be submitted by Sunday at noon. Winners will be notified by email and posted online.

Anyone selected will receive two hours of on-ice lessons from OHC instructors and corresponding jerseys.

“Peterborough’s a hockey town and not everybody has an opportunity to afford it,” said Martin Templeman, Autoconnect Sales owner and president. “It’s tough enough to put their kids in hockey let alone in camps and learn extra skills and I thought it was a worthy cause. How many kids would love to do it but are not in a financial position to do it? If there’s a way you can help a kid in your own community, you do it.”

“It's a pleasure for us at Overtime Hockey Company to partner with Martin and Cheryl of AutoConnect for a third year by providing 70 local hockey players an amazing opportunity,” said Kaury Jones, Overtime Hockey Company co-owner. “Our partnership allows us the ability to give back to the hockey community who gives so much to local businesses and charitable initiatives.”

Age groups are divided by year, ranging from anyone born between 2011-2017.

Schedule:

  • (2017) 9 a.m. at OHC Center - Dec.29 and 30

Peterborough Petes’s Brennan Othmann has made the final roster for Team Canada for the 2023 World Junior Championships (WJC) in Moncton and Halifax announced on Monday evening.

Othmann currently leads the Petes in points with 35 in 26 games. Photo courtesy of the Peteborough Petes.

This is his second time representing Canada as he won a gold medal with the team on August 20 in overtime against Finland. The New York Ranger prospect recorded two goals and four assists for six points in six games in his first World Junior Championship. He has also represented Canada at the U18 and U17 levels, winning a gold medal at the 2021 IIHF World U18 Hockey Championships.

“We’re really excited for Brennan,” said Michael Oke, Petes general manager. “To represent Canada once at this event is a huge honour, to do it twice is an opportunity that not a lot of players get to experience.”

Othmann was acquired from the Flint Firebirds on Nov. 12 in exchange for Artem Guryev and three OHL Priority Selection picks. He joins Petes defenceman and Philadelphia Flyers prospect, Brian Zanetti who is representing Switzerland.

The Pickering-born forward becomes the third Pete to represent Canada at the WJC since 2010, along with Nick Ritchie in 2015 and Mason McTavish in 2022. The championships start on Dec. 26 with both Othmann and Zanetti in action for their respective countries.

Peterborough Petes Defeat Sarnia Sting, 4-1; Snap Five-Game Losing Streak

After suffering a 5-2 loss to the London Knights on Saturday, the Peterborough Petes rebounded and snapped their five-game losing streak on a back-to-back against the Sarnia Sting, 4-1, at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena on Sunday.

The Petes coughed up the first goal only 2:55 into the game as Zach Filak picked up a rebound and beat goaltender Michael Simpson on a wrap-around to give Sarnia a 1-0 lead. The lead did not last long as 2:39 later, Jax Dubois picked up a rebound and beat Sting goalie Nicholas Surzycia to tie at 1-1. Sam McCue got his first career OHL point with the primary assist.

Jonathan Melee committed a slashing penalty, making the Petes shorthanded but that benefitted Peterborough as Tucker Robertson took advantage of a giveaway at the Petes blueline and nab his 13th goal of the season shorthanded for a 2-1 lead. It was the team’s first lead in five games. Four minutes later, Nick Lardis would bury a Jax Dubois rebound for a 3-1 lead into the third.

The Petes got into trouble committing six minor penalties in the third period but their special teams stood tall, killing off all five powerplays (one came from coincidental minor penalties). Sahil Panwar, fresh out of the penalty box, found Chase Stillman for a goal and a 4-1 lead that ended up being the final.

The Petes next game is Front Line and Healthcare Workers Nighthosting the defending OHL-champion Hamilton Bulldogs at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday.

Hoops and Smiles At Special Olympics Basketball Championship Qualifier

Giant smiles dawned on the faces of roughly 75 Special Olympic athletes on the court as they participated in the Special Olympics Ontario Basketball School Championships Qualifier at St. Peter’s Secondary School on Friday.

Holy Cross, Crestwood, TASSS, Fenelon Falls Secondary School, St. Thomas Aquinas and host St. Peter’s were the six participating schools taking part in the qualifier.

The opening ceremony consisted of volunteers, teachers and police escorting the athletes down the hallway and into the gymnasium in a grand entrance.

“Every one of those kids in that gym is a champion,” said Ernie Ellement, tournament co-organizer. “It's not about winning or losing. I hate that word, ‘losing.’ We have winners and non-winners. The bottom is, every single one of those kids, they're a winner because they're here, they're playing, they're having fun and that's what it's all about.”

At the end of the day, Special Olympics Ontario gathers the results of the qualifiers and determines what teams advance to the school provincial championships that will be held next spring.

The event is fresh off a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Seeing friends and being active is what Special Olympics athlete and St. Peter’s student Hannah Goode has been looking forward to as a seven-year veteran of the program.

“I know who I am because I love people a lot,” she explained. “I am one of the leaders, I am one of the examples, I'm a team captain and I'm a good teammate. I help my friends from the program if they need but also I like to help others that have disabilities.”

“Watch the student be a champion on the floor when they score a basket and watch how much they light up,” said Ellement. “You visually see the happiness within them and that's what it's all about.

After being down four goals, the Peterborough Petes almost had a comeback, losing to the Kitchener Rangers 4-3, at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

The loss extends Peterborough’s losing streak to four games and have yet to win a gam in December.

The Petes coughed up three goals in the first period as Carson Rehkopf got Kitchener on the board with a powerplay goal less than three minutes into the game. They followed that up with two more goals in 1:02 late in the period from Reid Valade and Roman Schmidt to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead going into the second period.

Valade continued where he left off scoring another goal beating Simpson but what looked a spectaular save outstretching from behind his back to get it with his glove. Further review determined that the puck crossed the line for a 4-0 Kitchener lead. Peterborough attempted to rally 68 seconds later as Tucker Robertson finally got Peterborough on the board and prevent the shutout. Chase Stillman got his turn 65 seconds later and cut the deficit to two entering the third period.

Four minutes into the third, Jack Van Volsen tacked on a powerplay goal to make it a one-goal game. The Petes peppered Rangers goalie Marcus Vandenberg with 15 shots in the period but could not solve him a second time in the third. The Petes got into penalty trouble with two in the final four minutes of the game, failing to achieve he comeback in a 4-3 loss.

Peterborough travels to London to take on the Knights on Saturday as their next game. The Petes have won the last three meetings between the two teams.
