Peterborough Petes Close Out Final Home Preseason Game With 3-2 Loss to the Kingston Frontenacs

In their final home preseason game, the Peterborough Petes lost a close game, 3-2, to the Kingston Frontenacs at the Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre on Sunday.

The game was a fundraiser for Norwood Minor Hockey and included a raffle, Chuck-A-Puck and a post-game autograph session with the Petes players.

Leon Kolarik scored his third goal of the preseason, while Kaden McGregor scored his first as a Pete (but did score a shootout goal againstt Erie on Aug. 30). Yanis Lutz picked up his third assist in as many games, as Thanasi Marentette and Francis Parish had an assist each. Dylan Lee-Stack started the game, stopping 16/18, before Masen Johnston took over for the second half, stopping 12/13. 

After the game, the team has reassigned the following players:

“As we move closer to the season, we’ve been forced to make some more very difficult decisions,” said Michael Oke, general manager and vice president of operations. “These players all had a solid camp and we will continue to monitor their development and progress for future opportunities with the Peterborough Petes.”

The Petes conclude their 2025 preseason on Friday when they travel to Sarnia to take on the Sting at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena at 7:05 p.m.

Four Peterborough Lakers Drafted to National Lacrosse League

Four Peterborough Century 21 Lakers were drafted into the National Lacrosse League on Saturday.

Braedon Saris, Ben Trumble, Adam Thistlethwaite and Owen Hiltz all heard their name called during the six-round draft.

Hiltz led the pack with his third overall selection to the Toronto Rock. The Colorado Mammoth drafted Saris at number five, the Georgia Swarm took Trumble at number seven and Thistlethwaite went in the second round at 24th overall to the Rochester Knighthawks.

Saris was acquired from Cobourg in mid-June in exchange for Tommy Collins and Brampton’s third-round draft pick in 2026.

“Braedon just got better and better every time he stepped on the floor and I think he looked more confident every time he stepped on the floor with us,” said Lakers head coach Mike Hasen. “When he came in here this year he might have been a little bit in awe of the group he was playing with, but he took over and led us through that playoff stretch, doing great things.”

Trumble and Thistlethwaite are graduates of the Jr. A Lakers program. Trumble joins Carter Page and former Laker Jordan MacIntosh on the Swarm. Thistlethwaite will continue to play for Lakers head coach Mike Hasen, who also coaches the Knighthawks containing Mitch Ogilvie, Matt Gilray, Turner Evans, Austin Hasen and Brad McCulley.

“I’m just glad to be picked. I’m really excited for this opportunity; I think it’ll be a good one,” said Trumble. “I’m starting to reach out to the guys on the (Swarm). I can’t wait to get going.”

Hiltz spent the 2025 season with the PLL’s Carolina Chaos instead of playing box lacrosse in the MSL. In his rookie season with the Lakers in 2024 he scored 57 points in 24 games.

Two current Jr. A Lakers were also drafted, with OJLL Goalie of the Year Waukiigan Shognosh taken 14th overall by the Buffalo Bandits and forward Curtis Ward was picked in the fifth round, 62nd overall by the Las Vegas Desert Dogs.

NLL Faceoff Weekend is scheduled for Nov. 28 and 29.

Two OHL-Champion Peterborough Petes Swap NHL Teams In Trade

In a rare circumstance, two OHL-champion Peterborough Petes are swapping NHL teams as Tucker Robertson and J.R. Avon are trading spots after an announcement by the NHL on Thursday.

Robertson is headed to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Avon joining the Seattle Kraken.

Robertson was drafted 123rd overall by the Seattle Kraken in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. He is the first-ever Peterborough Pete to be drafted to the franchise. He spent parts of the past two seasons with Seattle’s AHL affiliate team, the Coachella Valley Firebirds. During the 2024-25 season, Robertson registered four goals and five assists for nine points across 38 games. He has accumulated 10 goals, nine assists and 19 points in 77 career AHL games with the Firebirds.

Avon signed an entry-level contract with the Flyers as an undrafted prospect in September of 2021. He played two seasons in the AHL with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms from 2023 to 25. Avon recorded 16 goals, 19 assists and 35 points in 125 games with the Phantoms.

Both players were part of the OHL champion Petes team during the 2023-24 season.

Lakefield Junior ‘C’ Chiefs to Honour Long-Time Coach On Opening Night

The Lakefield Graham Carpentry Jr. C Chiefs are honouring former coach, Colin Donaldson, at their home opener on Sept. 16.

Donaldson coached the Chiefs for 14 seasons across three different stints, from 1983 to 2008. He led the team to five Central Ontario Championships and two Ontario Championships. He also coached the Lakefield Midgets to an Ontario Championship in 1992.

The ceremony will take place before the game's opening faceoff on Sept. 16.

The Chiefs host the Amherstview Jets at 7 p.m.

Peterborough Petes Split Series With Erie Otters In Weekend Preseason Games

The Peterborough Petes and Erie Otters took a win each in a pair of weekend preseason games at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Saturday and Sunday.

It was the first preseason game for both teams as the Petes never relinquished the lead and defeated the Otters 5-2 on Saturday.

Caden Taylor led the way for the Petes, scoring twice and adding two assists. Leon Kolarik, Colin Fitzgerald and Braydon McCallum all scored and had an assist, while Carson Cameron and Matthew Soto both had two assists. James Petrovski and Yanis Lutz also had an assist in the game. Petes goalie Easton Rye played the first two periods in net, stopping 17 shots 18. Masen Johnston took over for the third period, stopping seven of eight shots.

The Otters got their revenge on Sunday, defeating the Petes in a shootout, 3-2, on Sunday.

Leon Kolarik scored his second goal of the preseason, while Genc Ula also scored. Liam Ladds, Gerry DiCunzolo, Adam Levac and Lutz all had an assist in the game. Johnston played the first period in goal, stopping 12 of 13 shots. New York-native Dylan Lee-Stack took over for the second and third, stopping 21 of 22.

After the game, the team has reassigned the following players:

Peterborough Petes 2025 Training Camp Recap: Scrimmages Day One

The Peterborough Petes wrapped up day one of their 2025 Training Camp on-ice scrimmages on Wednesday at the Peterborough Memorial Centre (PMC).

Team Hybrid wrapped up the day with two wins in two games, taking the overall lead in the standings. Braydon McCallum (2G, 3A) finished the day leading camp in points, with Caden Taylor (3G, 1A) in second place. Colin Fitzgerald (1G, 2A), Kaden McGregor (1G, 2A), Genc Ula (1G, 2A), Leon Kolarik (2G, 1A) and Joseph Cadorin (1G, 2A) are all tied for third place with three points each.

FloSports and Ontario Hockey League Announce Seven-Year Media Partnership

In a new way of seeing the Peterborough Petes, FloSports has entered into a seven-year media partnership with the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) to start the 2025-26 season.

FloHockey streams tens of thousands of games annually from the AHL, ECHL, USHL, SPHL, Swedish Hockey League, and top college and junior leagues. Last season, it reached more than 6 million total viewers and over 21 million video views on social media. Photo courtesy of the Peterborough Petes.

The new agreement establishes FloHockey to view live and on-demand streaming coverage of the OHL’s full regular season, postseason and marquee league events.

The partnership brings over 680 OHL games, including regular-season matchups, playoff rounds, the Connor McDavid OHL Top Prospects Game and the OHL Championship Series for the J. Ross Robertson Cup.

As part of the deal, the OHL will continue its use of LeagueStat; FloSports’ stats and data platform.

“The OHL has long been a pillar of junior hockey in North America, and this partnership is a milestone for our coverage,” said Josh Siskin, FloHockey general manager. “Adding the OHL alongside the QMJHL offers fans the most complete junior hockey streaming experience available anywhere. Peterborough Lakers Season Ends With Game Five Loss to Six Nations Chiefs

Third time is not the charm for the Peterborough Lakers as the Six Nations Chiefs have eliminated them in the Major Series Lacrosse finals for the third consecutive year, 12-7, in game five at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena on Monday night.

Six Nations took a stranglehold on the game in the first period, scoring four of five goals with Jordan Stouros getting the lone tally for the Lakers.

The second period was not much better as Six Nations scored another four goals, extending their lead. Peterborough scored twice in the frame from Justin Sykes and Braedon Saris but found themselves trailing 8-3 headed into the third stanza.

After letting in a goal 35 seconds into the frame, Peterborough made a push, scoring the next four of five goals to pull within three for a 10-7 game. Peterborough made their special teams work with a Taite Cattoni powerplay goal, then three shorthanded goals. Mike Robinson scored one while Sykes had a pair of them to complete the hat trick. However, a pair of power play goals from Six Nations including an empty netter sealed Peterborough’s fate to end their season.

The Chiefs will represent the East at the 2025 Mann Cup in New Westminster, B.C., against the New Westminster Salmonbellies. This is the fourth time that both teams will meet each other in the Mann Cup (1994, 1995, 2023 and 2025).

Newly signed Petes import player Adam Novotný will miss the beginning of camp as he is with the Czechia U20 national team.

Camp begins on Tuesday with off-ice testing. The on-ice portion of camp starts on Wednesday with the first of two days of scrimmages.

Players will be split into four teams for the games, with each team facing each other once. The top two and bottom two teams based on record will face each other on the afternoon of Thursday.

All scrimmages and Friday’s maroon vs White game will be streamed live on the Petes YouTube channel. All scrimmages will take place at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
