Scam Phone Call Cost 82-Year-Old Peterborough Resident $10,000

Peterborough Police are issuing a warning after an 82-year-old man was scammed out of $10,000 for their granddaughter’s release on announced Thursday.

The resident received a phone call from someone acting as a police officer and that $10,000 was required for their granddaughter’s release. The scammer set up an exchange at the residence and collected the money. 

The suspect was described to police as:

• White Male

• Early 20’s

Peterborough Police are concerned that someone went to a residence and are asking people to be extra cautious.

Police Services reminds residents that they never call requesting money for the release of a suspect.

Peterborough Police Report 13 Firearms Unaccounted For On Stolen Truck

Peterborough Police continues to investigate the theft of firearms from Peterborough this past Sunday which includes the search for suspects.

The inventory check on the returned trailer and firearms is now complete and revealed that 13 of the small-calibre firearms are still missing.

Any unaccounted for firearms is concerning to Peterborough Police and investigators ask anyone who may have information on this incident to call the Peterborough Police Crime Line at 705-876-1122 x555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The search for suspects also continues.  As previously released, the suspects appear to arrive and in a four-door blue sedan which follows the tractor trailer unit out of the yard in the early Sunday morning.

Police Recover Trailer With Over 2,000 Stolen Firearms

The trailer sought in a theft of firearms incident in Peterborough along with a large quantity of the firearms has been recovered in Peel Region.

The trailer and its contents are being returned to Peterborough and Peterborough Police, along with the manufacturer, will be going through the items to determine if anything is still missing.

“Peterborough police would like to thank Peel Regional Police and the other law enforcement agencies that continue to assist with this case,” Peterborough police said in a media release issued Wednesday morning. “Thank you to public and media for helping to get the descriptions of the vehicles involved out. ”

The focus to date has been to locate the trailer and the missing firearms and the investigation will continue as will the search for suspects.

Truck Carrying Stolen Firearms From Peterborough Has Been Found Cargo Still Missing

The truck stolen from Peterborough in connection with the theft of firearms has been found.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Monday Peterborough Police received a call from Peel Regional Police that the truck cab had been located in the Queen Street and Goreway Drive area, an industrial area of Brampton.

The trailer and its cargo were not with the truck.

The trailer is described as a 2014 Hyundai 53-foot Dry Freight Van trailer, license plate V3092A, white in colour with a silver metallic line that runs horizontally the whole length of the trailer. In addition, Peterborough Police would like to add that the number on the trailer is 14002.

Peterborough Police are investigating at least five other incidents in connection with the attempt theft of tractor trailers.

Five separate businesses reported attempted thefts of trucks and trailers at their businesses between Feb. 11, and Feb. 14. Two of the businesses were on Neal Drive, two on Technology Drive and one on Parkhill Road East.

In several cases the business reported that trucks were attempted to be started and hooked up to trailers before the suspects fled the area. 

Peterborough Police believe these incidents are connected to the theft of a tractor trailer carrying firearms on Sunday.

Police Investigating Theft Of Truck Carrying Over 2,000 Firearms

Peterborough police are investigating the theft of a truck carrying firearms early Sunday morning.

At around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, officers were called to a trucking company on Parkhill Road East after reports a truck carrying more than 2,000 firearms with clips was stolen from the yard.

Through investigation it was determined that the incident happened around 3 a.m. Officers attended the scene and canvassed the area. It’s believed there is no ammunition on the truck.

It has been determined that all the firearms that were stolen were of small calibre with the clips attached.

In an email to Global News, Savage Arms - a firearms manufacturer located in Lakefield, confirmed the truck contained their products.

While it is early in the investigation, it is believed this is an isolated incident. Other law enforcement agencies across the province have been notified.

It’s believed the suspects entered several other commercial yards in the city, before this one and that they had attempted to take different trucks and trailers before leaving with the trailer being sought in this incident.

The investigation is leaning toward an isolated crime of opportunity rather than a than a targeted incident.

The suspects appear to arrive in a four door blue sedan which leaves the scene with the tractor trailer unit.

The truck is a 2019 Freightliner New Cascadia 126 with ON license plate 938 2PV, white in colour with the company name in red on the doors and a red #97 in red on the side of the hood.

Survivors Abreast Storage Locker Broken Into With Items Stolen

The Survivors Abreast Dragonboat team is asking for the public’s help in locating items stolen from their storage locker on Thursday at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Among the stolen items were a dragon head that is placed on their boat, a drum, two wooden drum seats that fasten on the front of the boats, a box of safety kits and a camping tent.

28-Year-Old Peterborough Man Charged After Sharing Explicit Photos Of Girlfriend On Social Media

A 28-year-old Peterborough man has been charged with distributing intimate images without consent after sharing and posting explicit photos of his girlfriend on social media without her consent.

The accused, a 28-year-old man, and the victim, a woman in her 20’s, are involved in an on-again-off-again domestic relationship. On the night of December 19th, the accused and victim became involved in a verbal dispute at a Peterborough residence. Following the dispute, the accused compiled a collage of intimate photos of the victim and, without her consent, distributed the photos to others via text messages and posted the collage on social media.

Shortly after midnight on December 20th, police attended a Peterborough home where as a result of the investigation the accused was arrested and charged with distribute intimate image without consent.

The accused was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday (December 20th). The name of the accused will not be released in order to protect the identity of the victim in this domestic-based incident.

Peterborough Police Just Helped Crack An International Case Involving A Man Preying On Kids Online

Peterborough Police Service have assisted in a joint investigation with Homeland Security that has lead to the arrest of a Louisiana man charged with a sextortion scheme involving children.

Here's how police worked with other forces to crack the case:

In November of 2014, Peterborough Police Service Constable Stephen Cox attended an address in Lakefield and spoke with a 12-year-old girl who was being extorted through an online app for nude images by an adult male.

Detective Ryan Wilson of the Peterborough Police Service conducted a follow-up and obtained a suspect’s IP address by means of a Production Order and determined that the suspect resided in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
 
The reports of Constable Cox and Detective Wilson were forwarded to the Department of Homeland Security in Ottawa and eventually to the Baton Rouge field office in Louisiana.

The District Attorney in the State of Louisiana advised Peterborough Police that because of their investigation, a warrant was executed in Louisiana where at least four other victims were identified in various locations across the United States.
 
As result of the joint investigation, the accused Matthew Chaney Walker, 25, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is facing a number of charges including extortion, production of child pornography, receipt of child pornography, possession of child pornography and forfeiture.
 
“The work of Constable Cox and Detective Wilson was exemplary and demonstrates the benefits of both our generalist philosophy and collaborative approach,” says Detective Staff Sergeant Lynne Buehler, Peterborough Police Service.

“The benefits of our force having a member of the Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet is apparent in this case. Detective Wilson represented our Service with the highest professionalism, which contributed to the successful investigation and prosecution of this case,” adds Detective Buehler.

The investigation of this case is ongoing. To date, four female child victims have been identified and law enforcement is attempting to confirm the identity of other victims.

Peterborough Utilities Reporting Scam Alert

During the past week, Peterbororough Police have received a number of complaints from concerned citizens about a Peterborough Utilities (PUC) representative calling saying they had an overdue account that needed to be settled. 

Here's how the scam works...

1. People were asked on the phone to obtain a money order and send it to a provided address.
2. A phone number is provided and when called, it is answered by a "Hydro Billing Dept". 

This is not a legitimate phone number or PUC representative, police say. This scam has also been reported in Toronto, Whitby and Thunder Bay.

PUC has also tweeted out about the scam, warning the public...
