Petebrorough Man Arrested For Domestic Assault After Allegedly Pushing and Choking a Woman

A 30-year-old Peterborough man is facing charges involving a domestic assault on a woman.

On Wednesday, Police learned that the man pushed and choked the woman during an argument. The victim attended Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) for treatment of her injuries.

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Assault (domestic)

  • Assault Cause Bodily Harm - Choking (Domestic)

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 13.

To protect the identity of the victim, Police are not releasing the name of the accused.

Two-Car Collision Leads to One Vehicle Crashing Into House; One Driver Charged, Other Treated With Minor Injuries

The Peterborough Police Service is investigating a two-vehicle collision in which one vehicle crashed into a house on Monday morning.

At roughly 10:15 a.m., officers were called to Rubidge Street and Murray Street about a two-vehicle collision.

Officers learned that one car had made an unsafe lane change and struck another, hitting the side of a house.

One driver was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre with minor injuries. Under the Highway Traffic Act, the other driver was charged with unsafe move, lane or shoulder.

Peterborough Teenager Arrested With Possession of a Knife While Walking About a Baseball Field

A 19-year-old Peterborough man is facing a charge after an incident Monday evening.

At roughly 6:15 p.m., officers were called about a male walking about the baseball park at Hunter Street and Burnham Street, opening and closing a knife.  When officers arrived, they learned that several people were concerned by the man’s behaviour. Officers located a man matching the description given to police a short distance away. When they took him into custody, a knife was also seized.

As a result of the investigation, a 19-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court Tuesday.

Peterborough Police Warn Public Of Taxi Scam Involving Stolen Cards

The Peterborough Police Service is a public warning after multiple reports of a scam involving a fake taxi.

The scam involves a person asking the victim to help them pay for their taxi fare.  When the good Samaritan helps out and enters their PIN into the card reader, they are distracted and the victim’s card is swapped out for a fake card. The suspects then leave the area with the original card and the PIN number.

Police say the incidents are occuring outside of businesses.

Woman Taken to Toronto Hospital After Suffering Non-Life-Threatening Injuries From Two Gunshot Wounds; Suspect Remains at Large

The Peterborough Police Service is searching for a suspect after a shooting which led to a woman suffering non-life-threatening injuries from two gunshots on early Saturday morning.

Just after midnight, a woman attended Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) with two gunshot wounds. She was flown to a Toronto hospital for treatment.

The Peterborough Police believe this to be a targeted incident.

On Monday morning, Peterborough Police stated they are still continuing their investigation and said further information will be released when available.

Peterborough Police Seeking Suspect Who Assaulted and Robbed a Woman On the Street

The Peterborough Police Service is seeking a man who committed a street-level robbery and assault on a woman on Thursday night.

At roughly 9:45 p.m., officers were called to the Romaine Street and Park Street North area. A 30-year-old woman had been walking on the path when a man tried to grab her backpack. A struggle ensued and the woman was punched in the face. A passing vehicle stopped to help and the suspect ran southbound on the path.

The suspect was described to police as:

  • While male, approximately 5'10"

  • Thin face with sunken cheeks

  • Black hoodie

  • Dark track pants

  • Small backpack

  • Black Ball Cap

Boston Man Charged With Fraud Through Rental Scams On Facebook Marketplace In Peterborough

22-year-old Boston man Nigel Chiwara is facing fraud charges in connection with a rental scam in Peterborough.

On Monday, the Peterborough Police Fraud Unit were reported two incidents of fraud through a rental scam. Both times, the victim responded to an ad for an apartment on Facebook Marketplace. They were given a tour of the apartment in the Brock Street and Reid Street area and sent roughly $1,000 each to secure the same apartment.

Once the payment was made, the potential landlord stopped contact with the victims and they were never given access to the apartment. Officers attended the apartment and the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Fraud Under $5,000 X2

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court July 23.

The Peterborough Police Service is releasing the suspect’s name in this case since they believe there are more victims.

Peterborough Woman Allegedly Causes Collision After Driving Impaired; Several People Treated By Medical Staff

An 18-year-old Peterborough woman is facing impaired driving charges after a collision Tuesday night.

At roughly 9:30 p.m., officers were reported to a two-vehicle collision at Monaghan Road and Bolivar Street. Officers noticed signs of impairment during a conversation with one of the drivers. That driver and a passenger were taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment. Three others in the second vehicle were assessed by EMS at the scene. 

The woman was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Operation While Impaired - Alcohol 

  • Operation While Impaired- Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)

  • Disobey Stop Sign - Fail to Stop (Highway Traffic Act)

  • Novice Driver - BAC Above Zero (Highway Traffic Act)

The accused was issued an automatic 90-day license suspension and seven-day vehicle impoundment.

She was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court July 23.

17-Year-Old Youth Arrested After Allegedly Hitting a Woman With a Phone and Uttered Threats With a Toy Gun

A 17-year-old Peterborough male is facing assault charges including uttering threats with a toy gun after an incident Monday evening.

At roughly 6:00 p.m., officers were called to a residence and learned that a woman had been struck by a phone. A gun had been pointed at her and she had been verbally threatened.  Officers entered the home and located the suspect and took him into custody. The weapon was located on the property and was determined to be a toy gun.

The male was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

  • Assault with A Weapon

  • Uttering Threats - Cause death or Bodily Harm

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court today, June 11, 2024.

Peterborough Man Arrested After Allegedly Stealing Items From a Parked Car

A 34-year-old Peterborough man is facing theft charges from a parked vehicle after an incident early Monday morning.

At roughly 3:30 a.m., Police received a report of an unknown man entering a vehicle in the Firwood Crescent and Weller Street area. They located a man matching the description given and took him into custody.

During a search after arrest, officers located a hammer, a box cutter, along with multiple cards belonging to another person. 

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 - in Canada

  • Theft Under $5,000 from a Motor Vehicle

  • Trespassing at Night

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court Monday.
