Peterborough Woman Charged With Impaired Driving After Found Slumped Over Steering Wheel

A 30-year-old Peterborough woman is facing an impaired charge after an incident on Wednesday afternoon.

At roughly 3:15 p.m., officers were called to the Brookdale Plaza parking lot about a person slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle with the vehicle running.  Upon arrival, officers roused the individual and observed signs of impairment.

The woman was arrested and charged with:

• Operation while impaired - blood drug concentration

The accused was issued an automatic 90-day license suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on June 9.

Peterborough Woman Arrested After Intentionally Striking Vehicle With Her Own Then Fleeing

A 19-year-old Peterborough woman is facing various charges including assault and mischief after a vehicular incident on Saturday evening.

At roughly 9:30 p.m., officers were made aware of a two-vehicle collision on Raymond Street. Officers said that one of the vehicles was struck on purpose by the second vehicle. The second vehicle fled the area following the collision. The occupants of both vehicles were known to each other.

During the investigation, officers located the driver of the second vehicle at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Sunday near Parkhill Road and George Street.

The woman was charged with:

• Assault with A Weapon

• Mischief - destroys or damages property

• Dangerous operation

• Fail to remain

• Failure to Comply with Release Order - Other than to attend court

• Owner operate a motor vehicle without insurance

The accused was held in custody and appeared in Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) on Sunday.

Man Wanted On Several Theft Charges Arrested After Getting Caught With Items From Another Incident

A 41-year-old man is facing several theft charges after an incident on Thursday afternoon.

At roughly 1 p.m., Community F.I.R.S.T. Unit officers were called to a business in the George Street and Rink Street area about a theft in progress. They learned that the suspect had left the store.

During a search of the area, officers located a man matching the description given to police and took him into custody. The items from the business were located and returned. Through investigation, it was further learned that the suspect was also wanted in connection with three other theft incidents at another local business in the past two weeks.

The man was arrested and charged with:

• Theft Under $5,000 x4

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court on Friday.

Peterborough Man Wanted On Warrants Arrested For Attempting to Flee Courthouse After He Discovered He Was Under Arrest

A 30-year-old Peterborough man wanted on a warrant is facing a new charge after attempting to flee from police from the courthouse on Wednesday.

At roughly 3:50 pm, the man attended the courthouse and was advised of the warrant for the following:

• fraud under $5,000

• fail to attend for fingerprints - as per undertaking

• theft under $5,000 x4

• disobeying order of court x4

• failure to attend court while on release order

• fail to comply with appearance notice - court/fingerprinting

• uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm

When the man learned he was under arrest, he fled the courthouse on foot. An officer gave chase while general patrol officers downtown had assisted. The man was caught in the Water Street and King Street area and taken into custody.

The man was arrested on the strength of the warrant and further charged with:

• Resist Peace Officer

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court on Thursday.

Brampton Man Faces Multiple Charges After His Tractor-Trailer Was Stuck On a Residence's Front Lawn

A 45-year-old Brampton man is facing several charges under the Highway Traffic Act after a tractor-trailer was stuck in the front yard of a residence on Thursday afternoon.

At roughly 12:25 p.m., officers were called to the area of North Monaghan Parkway and Whittington Drive. 

After the vehicle was removed from the property, members of the Traffic Services Unit inspected the truck-trailer combination. Following the inspection, several defects were found with the braking system.

The man was charged under the Highway Traffic Unit with:

• Careless driving

• Disobey sign

• Improper braking system - commercial motor vehicle

• Push rod stroke exceeds prescribed limit - commercial motor vehicle

• Drive commercial motor vehicle with a major defect in it or in drawn vehicle

• Fail to enter defect in daily inspection report

• Operate unsafe vehicle - commercial motor vehicle

Officers removed and seized the plates from the vehicle.

Peterborough Police Issue Fraud Warning after 77-Year-Old Resident Scammed

The Peterborough Police Service is issuing a warning after a resident was scammed out of almost $8,000.

The 77-year-old victim was initially contacted on April 16 by an unknown number with the female caller identifying themselves as being from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). The caller provided a badge number and indicated that the victim was in trouble because of the contents of a package that had been intercepted while it was being imported.

Over the next two days the caller convinced the victim to get money from their bank and deposit it to an account through a Bitcoin ATM. The victim was also told they would get the money back once the issued was cleared up. They further asked the victim to withdraw as much money as possible over the weekend for payment on April 20. At that point, the victim realized they should contact police. 

Safety Tips:

• Be very suspicious of unsolicited calls from unfamiliar numbers

• Government and law enforcement agencies will never ask you to pay to resolve a situation

• Scammers and fraudster will often be very aggressive and rely on creating a sense of urgency for you to respond and act.  It is important to resist the urgency and speak to a trusted friend or family member to get a second opinion.

45-Year-Old Peterborough Man Charged With Assault With a Weapon After an Incident Friday

A 45-year-old Peterborough man is facing an assault charge after approaching a security guard with a knife early Friday morning.

At approximately 2:15 a.m. on April 17, officers were called to a business on Charlotte Street in the area of Aylmer Street. Upon arrival, they learned that a security guard had been asking an unwanted person to leave the building when the man approached the guard with a knife. The guard fled to their vehicle and the man continued to yell and brandish the knife. Officers located a suspect matching the description given to police a short distance away.  The suspect put down a knife and was taken into custody. The security guard was not injured.

As a result of the investigation, a 45-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

• Assault with a weapon

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court April 17.

Peterborough Police Seeking Driver Involved In Fatal Hit-and-Run Incident Leaving A Man Deceased

Officers with the Peterborough Police Service Traffic Unit are investigating after a fatal hit-and-run, leaving one man dead, early Thursday morning.

At roughly 1:15 am, officers were called to Monaghan Road just north of Albert Street. They learned a driver had stopped after noticing something on the road, as they were calling 9-1-1 to report that someone had been hit, another vehicle struck the man. The second vehicle stopped briefly but left before police arrived. The 42-year-old victim was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre, where he was pronounced deceased.

Peterborough Police officers will be in the area, canvassing for video footage and would like to speak to the drivers of both vehicles involved. The second vehicle to have struck the man was described to police as a lifted pick-up truck with blue underglow LED lighting.

Peterborough Man Wanted On Four Warrants Arrested

A 37-year-old Peterborough man wanted on four warrants has been arrested and faces a new charge after an incident on Tuesday night.

At roughly 8:30 pm, officers on general patrol in the George Street North and London Street area spotted a man wanted on warrants walking with another person. When the officer approached the man, he fled southbound on George Street. 

Officers gave chase while several others arrived to assist. The man was caught and taken into custody in the Bethune Street and King Street area.

He was wanted on four warrants for the following:

• Theft under $5,000 x2

• Robbery with violence

• Break and enter

• Failing to comply with probation x5

• Failing to comply with release order x4

• Failing to comply with several other orders

The man was arrested on the strength of the warrants and further charged with:

• Fail to comply with release order

The accused is currently bound by a release order with the following condition: to not contact or communicate with the person he was spotted walking with.

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court on Wednesday.

Peterborough Man Charged With Robbery After Allegedly Striking Victim With Phone and Taking Cash

A 39-year-old Peterborough man is facing a robbery charge, taking money after an incident early Tuesday morning.

At roughly 3:30 a.m., officers were called to the area of Sherbrooke Street and George Street North about an injured man. They learned that the victim had been struck on the head and his phone and cash had been taken.  Officers located a man matching the description given to police in the Bethune Street and Townsend Street area. He was taken into custody. The victim was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment of a minor injury.  It is believed that the parties involved were known to each other.

The man was arrested and charged with:

• Robbery with a weapon

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court on Tuesday.
