Watch Maryam Monsef's Passionate Maiden Speech In The House Of Commons

On Monday (January 25th), MP Maryam Monsef gave her Maiden Speech to the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament for Peterborough-Kawartha.

In her passionate talk, she made commitments to the people of her riding here and to the people of Canada. She also made a plea for civility to her colleagues in the House to work together and make this country all that it can be.

A Peterborough Woman Just Found A Gecko In Her House That Had Been Missing 4 Months

Peterborough's Carol Edwards had one heck of a surprise this weekend when she decided to clean her kids' rooms. Here is her story below as told on a Facebook post on her page:

"So I decide to rearrange my kids rooms this weekend and once again get rid of 'stuff'. As I move Clayton's [her son] bed, I see a tail. The tail is still alive and is Clayton's Gecko that we thought he lost back late summer. Being so upset that he lost his Gecko he asked for another one for Christmas. Well Reggie lives on, as well as Rovi the new Gecko he got for Christmas. But seriously I am in disbelief! This house has a cat and two dogs. So clearly the cat does not do the job he was brought in to do and the dogs well...they are pretty. You can go 4 months without feeding a Gecko, it will live."

We asked Edwards for more background on this miracle discovery and she told PTBOCanada this:

"So the story was my son Clayton took him outside in the summer as the boys regularly do—fresh air and some 'outside time'. You put them in a pail with a little water which helps them in shedding their skin. That was the last time I saw him. Clayton started freaking out one night a couple weeks after that, saying Reggie was gone. We did a search of the bedroom but because of having other animals in the house, I thought that if he had been out that long the other animals in the house would have eaten him. This was Septemberish."

But the miracle ending was when Edwards decided to de-clutter her kids' rooms. And how does Edwards think Reggie The Miracle Gecko survived all these months?

"He probably ate household spiders, which I have noticed I have had less of when I think about it," she tells PTBOCanada.

Lol, there you have it. One found Gecko, and many less spiders.

He crossed the Hunter Street bridge from downtown Peterborough and made his way to one of the world's best outdoor skating rinks—the Trent Severn at the Lift Lock. Then he made the trek back to the bridge. Below are his stunning pics...

heneghan peng Architects Announced As Winning Design For New Canoe Museum

After working through 97 high quality Stage 1 submissions from leading firms located all over the world, the Canadian Canoe Museum announced on Thursday (January 21st) Ireland-based heneghan peng and Toronto-based Kearns Mancini as the designers of the new Canadian Canoe Museum at the Peterborough Lift Lock. One of the reasons why their design won is that their design worked organically with the land rather than overwhelming it.

"The organically-shaped volume banded on its top edge with local hardwood is embedded within the site’s drumlins, allowing the museum’s light-sensitive collections of historic birch bark canoes that date back to the 1780s and aboriginal artefacts to enjoy energy-passive, naturally dark spaces. The museum’s stunning two-acre green roof will provide the community with the possibility of creating edible gardens, native flower pollinators and aboriginal three sister plantings while facilitating efficient management of storm water and fantastic views to the Lift Lock."

The design includes:

• 17,000 sq ft of exhibition

• 20,000 sq ft of high bay storage that will be accessible to the public

• 250-seat multi-purpose room available for events and weddings

• Eastern door for aboriginal sunrise ceremonies

• Restaurant, café; local food

• Gift shop

• Toddler play area

• Trent-Severn Canal Exhibition, Parks Canada

• Artisanal workshops

• On-canal programming, canoe skills for all ages, winter and summer

• Citizenship ceremonies in canoes, next to the museum

• Connections to Trent-Severn bike path, in front of the museum

• Outdoor terrace and public space for yoga, food festivals 

“The design looks forward to the importance of sustainability, respect and responsibility as we move forward as a Nation to the Sesquicentennial in 2017, and beyond,” says Richard Tucker, executive director of the Canadian Canoe Museum.

“The design speaks to the importance of the contents, programming and messages conveyed by the Canadian Canoe Museum and its craft to all Canadians,” Tucker adds.

Maryam Monsef Announces Open House February 8th At Her Constituency Office

Maryam Monsef, Member of Parliament for Peterborough-Kawartha, is hosting an Open House on Monday, February 8th, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at her new constituency office located at Suite 4 (Ground Level), 417 Bethune Street.

Constituents are welcome to stop by the office and meet their MP at the Open House.

The constituency office in Peterborough is currently open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for constituents. Constituents of Peterborough-Kawartha can now also contact the office by phone at 705.745.2108; Toll-Free at 1.800.567.8554 or via email here.
 

In order to provide greater access to constituents, MP Monsef will also open a rotating rural constituency office in each township in the County of Peterborough. A staff member will be available at the following locations on the noted days to provide services for constituents:
