Why Missy Knott Is A Great Believer In The Power Of Community & People

For talented singer-songwriter Missy Knott, giving back to others is a huge part of who she is—an essential part of her DNA.

Missy believes deeply in the power of human connections, and much of that comes from loss and anguish she has experienced in her own life. "With how I've been affected by Colon Cancer [in 2009, her father lost his battle with it], suicide, mental health and all of the different walks of life I've grown up exploring, it is very important for me to connect on a personal level with people," she tells PTBOCanada.

That Missy does, having lent her time and talent to numerous charitable endeavours over the years—recent examples being the Women For Women YWCA Concert Fundraiser and the Peterborough Huskies special needs team.

"Missy is an incredible, inspiring young woman," Huskies co-founder Cathie Tuck tells PTBOCanada. "She does so much for others in this community. We have been blessed to know her. Missy is writing the Huskies theme song, along with some other amazing people. We cannot wait to hear her sing it. Missy leads with her heart and we are so proud of her. We know she will be a vital part of change in this world."

Missy herself is humble about all she does to give back, but says it's community and people that constantly inspire here:

"Our community has provided myself, my family, my daughter as well as my friends and forever people in my life with such amazing opportunities and experiences," Missy tells PTBOCanada. "I want everyone to succeed and thrive. I've faced enormous challenges and struggles since giving birth to my daughter. I now know the true effects, and why I have had to face them when it comes to disease and death among other things. I will always use my connections, business and personal, to help this community and the people in it who show me love when I most need it."

On of the most significant connections Missy has made over the years is with Randy Elliott, who she has forged a deep friendship and bond with. Randy lost his stepdaughter Chloe Leblanc in 2009 to Cystic fibrosis (CF). Chloe died at just age 26. That same year was when Missy's father who raised her, Ralf Warnke, passed away.

"When I met Randy Elliott about 7 years ago, we were both struggling to find our purpose after losing these very important people to us," Missy tells PTBOCanada. "He asked if Sam Ferguson and I, who were playing as a duo at that time, would be interested in helping him by playing for a fundraiser he would put together for Cystic Fibrosis. What started as a Cystic Fibrosis Fundraiser in memory of Chloe is now a celebration of life that includes a number of musicians from the community called Randy Rock N' Rolls for CF."

Missy and Randy

The duo have teamed up again this year for Randy Rock N' Rolls for CF, and it takes place Saturday, August 20th at The Tankhouse Pub (295 George St.). This all day Live Music Event begins at noon that day.

The lineup this year features Phoxy Music, Rebecca & Tamara, Jan Schoute, Art Lajambe, Hillary Dumoulin, Lorinda Frudd & Elijah Holt, Tami J Wilde, Brennan Wasson, Cale Crowe, Andrew D'Agostini & The Puck Stoppers, Cadillacs, Man on the Wall and High Waters Band. There will also be prize giveaways and silent auction items. More details can be found on their Facebook event page.

This, like all the community events Missy is involved with, is near and dear to her heart. Please spread the word and attend this great event for a special cause.

Look At These Pictures & Timelapse Of A Lightning Show Near Peterborough

Lakefield's Tim Rollwagen captured dramatic pictures and video of the intense lightning show that happened early Monday morning (July 25th) that shows the extent of the lightning storm.

Rollwagen tells PTBOCanada the photos and video were taken just off Hwy 28 between Lakefield and Peterborough where the Leahy's fruit and vegetable stand is at County Rd 33, and overlooks a small marshy lake called Buckley Lake.

"It was one of the best lightning shows I've seen in quite awhile," Rollwagen tells PTBOCanada. "Usually it's hard to get a few good shots but Mother Nature made it easy last night and I had the right vantage point."

"I shot the pictures from inside the car out a window," Rollwagen tells PTBOCanada. "Me and this hill have a history...as you know." (The history Rollwagen is referring to can be read about in this post from summer 2014.)

Rollwagen also created a timelapse from the 45 minutes of footage he captured. Watch it below...

15 Percent Of Peterborough's Recyclers Get Perfect Marks

The City’s Thumbs Up ambassador has been busy again this summer, travelling the streets of Peterborough and examining the full blue boxes she finds waiting for collection.

Katie, The Thumbs Up Ambassador

To date, 898 households have been surveyed, and close to 15 percent of those were found to be doing absolutely everything correctly.

The most common mistakes seen this summer are coffee cup lids going in the recycling (they should be removed from the cup, and placed in the garbage, along with stir sticks and cardboard sleeves), and plastic bags being loose and/or placed in the “Container” blue box. These need to be stuffed into one plastic bag, the top tightened shut, and placed in the “Paper” blue box.

Simple adjustments like these help to make sorting and processing much more efficient at the plant, saving time and money.

If you haven’t been visited yet, plan to get yourself a Thumbs Up sticker by following all of the City’s requirements for recycling. These can be found here under Recycling Materials.

“We are pleased to have Michael assume the role of CEO for our organization," says Innovation Cluster Board Chair John Desbiens. "His past experience building successful companies will be an asset as the Innovation Cluster continues with its exciting growth and development."

Skinner’s experience building numerous companies both internationally and in Peterborough makes him an excellent addition to the Innovation Cluster.

In 2001, Skinner founded Opritel Corporation, a learning software development company that he expanded worldwide. In 2008, Profit Magazine recognized Opritel as one of Canada’s fastest growing companies. In 2011, Operitel was acquired by OpenText Corporation. His background building a successful company will serve as a diving board for other entrepreneurs building innovative companies.

“I am honored to serve as the Innovation Cluster’s CEO and look forward to continuing to help grow our innovative clients and ensuring that they become successful employers here in Peterborough,” says Skinner, who tirelessly gives back to Peterborough in countless ways.

The hire of Skinner follows a new strategic plan in which the Innovation Cluster identified four key focus sectors: CleanTech, AgTech, Healthcare and Digital.

Heat Spell: It's Going to Feel Like 40 With the Humidity

We are entering the dog days of summer folks, and doggone it, it's going to be sweltering hot—and sunny, with not much rain to speak of. The heat wave really hits in Peterborough and the Kawarthas starting this Thursday.

By Friday, it could feel like 41 with the humidex...

Expect heat warnings to be issued anytime now. Keep hydrated, keep cool, look out for your neighbour (particularly the elderly), and please please don't leave pets unattended in your vehicle. They could die in minutes in the heat.

Looking at the long range forecast, it's going to be hot right through until at least next Tuesday.
