Boxer Cody Crowley Raising Money For Hospice Peterborough At Pizza Hut In Honour Of Anita Blackbourn

Cody Crowley, a professional boxer from Douro with a record of 10-0, is giving back to the Peterborough community in a big way. The Las Vegas-based boxer is helping to raise funds for Hospice Peterborough in honour of Anita Blackbourn, who lost her battle with cancer last October.

Crowley is appearing at Pizza Hut (901 Lansdowne St.) this Wednesday (January 4th) from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to raise funds for Hospice Peterborough Care Centre. He'll be there to sign autographs and take pictures with fans.

Anita Blackbourn's husband, Chris, is business partner at the Pizza Hut location that he runs with co-owner Marc Hartenberg.

Pizza Hut will donate 10 percent of all sales that day to Hospice Peterborough and people will be able to add their own donation at the location as well.

Peterborough Photographer Samantha Moss Is A Local Star On The Rise

Peterborough-based freelance portrait/product photographer Samantha Moss is a local star on the rise with her growing list of editorial and commercial clients. "This time last year I still felt I hadn’t earned the right to call myself a photographer—I was just a person who liked taking pictures," Moss tells PTBOCanada.

But over the past year, much has changed. Her client base and profile in the community has steadily risen.

"I have had the opportunity to work with some incredible local talent and businesses," Moss tells PTBOCanada. "Getting involved and networking with groups such as FastStart, The Greater Peterborough Innovation Cluster, and Arthur: Independent Press has opened so many doors for me."

Moss will be graduating in Spring from Trent University where she studied Media Studies, and has made roots here since moving here 6 years ago. She has found her calling in photography and photojournalism and plans to grow her business from right here in Peterborough.

A Good Samaritan In Lakefield Brought A Confused Elderly Man In From The Cold Last Night

On a cold Winter's night, a Good Samaritan in Lakefield helped out an elderly man in need.

According to the police report, in the early morning hours on December 31st, 2016 a resident in Lakefield located a lost and confused elderly male walking aimlessly outside in the cold.

The Good Samaritan took the male in to get him warm until police arrived. The subsequent investigation determined that the male was flummoxed by the darkness and his unfamiliar surroundings.

Police were able return the male unharmed to his home.

The name of the male and the Good Samaritan is being withheld for privacy reasons.

Millbrook Man Facing Impaired Driving Charges After Crashing Vehicle & Killing His Dog

Another tragedy from drinking and driving, an animal's life lost. See below from Peterborough Police release on Thursday (December 29th)...

On December 27, 2016 in the early afternoon a Millbrook man was driving his vehicle on Zion Line in Cavan Monaghan Township when he lost control and left the roadway. The vehicle entered the ditch, struck a tree and culvert. The driver was injured in the crash but managed to flag a passerby down for help. The man’s dog was in the vehicle at the time of the crash and was unfortunately killed as a result.
 
Emergency crews responded to assist the man who had been taken to another location for treatment. The subsequent investigation determined that at the time of the crash the man was impaired by alcohol.
 
Kyle Reininger 24, of Main Street, Millbrook is charged with Drive while Ability Impaired and Drive with more than 80 mgs.
 
The accused is to appear in court on January 19, 2016.

Peterborough Man Charged With Assault After Dispute Over Babysitting Dog & Birthday Cake On Day Before Christmas

We can't make this stuff up—see below from Wednesday's Peterborough police release (which also includes a Break and Enter where the suspect didn't flush the toilet)...

"On December 24, 2016 the accused in this matter was looking after a neighbour’s dog. When the neighbour returned to get their dog a dispute arose over the length of time the dog had to be watched. The accused followed the neighbour home and demanded they turn over a birthday cake that was being stored there. The accused then assaulted the neighbour in their home.

Dwayne Ireland 46, of Hunter Street, Peterborough is charged with Assault. The accused is to appear in court on January 19, 2017."

Peterborough Woman Posts Inspiring Message About Eating Over Holidays

Peterborough's Celestine Patricia Helen posted an empowering message to her Facebook page along with a photo of herself (see below) encouraging people to eat over the holidays and not to be self conscious about their bodies.

"I posted it because I have a history with a variety of eating disorders," she tells PTBOCanada. "The big family dinners are always nerve racking for me, and I know that they can be for a lot of others too."

Rescue Domestic Rats Just Arrived At Peterborough Humane Society As Part Of Large Scale Surrender In North Bay

On Thursday December 22nd, close to 600 domestic rats from an apartment in North Bay were transferred into the North Bay & District Humane Society.  Animal Welfare organizations from all across the province have come together to help these small animals.

Nearly 30 rats of the group have just arrived at the Peterborough Humane Society with the hope that they will ultimately find their forever homes here in our community.

“This is a very unique animal welfare story,” says Andrew Fraser, Executive Director, Peterborough Humane Society. “We are proud to be a part of the Provincial Animal Transfer Team with the Ontario SPCA and its Affiliate Communities to work together in animal welfare when such a large number of animals are in need of care.”

The rats are currently receiving health checks and will be placed up for adoption within the next few weeks. Anyone interested in adopting one of the rats is encouraged to visit the Peterborough Humane Society website
