Flying Colours Corp. To Open Brand New 100,000 Square Foot Hangar In Peterborough By Mid-2019

As part of its global expansion, global aviation company Flying Colours has announced that plans are currently being finalized for the groundbreaking of a brand-new hangar by the end of fall 2018 at the Peterborough, Ontario facility.

The additional hangar—the fourth at Flying Colours Peterborough headquarters—is needed to provide additional capacity for completions, refurbishment and heavy maintenance work scopes on large jet airframes.

THE HANGAR WILL BE DIVIDED INTO 3 DISTINCT ZONES…

-> A new 40,000-square-feet, climate controlled, state-of-the-art paint shop will be added, supplementing the two existing dedicated paint shops. (It will be large enough to accommodate business jets up to Global 7500, Boeing Business Jet or Airbus A220 size airframes.)

-> A second area of 40,000 square feet has been designed to enable heavy maintenance and/or interior work on up to four Global 6000-size aircraft to take place simultaneously.

-> Two higher levels will be used for new customer offices, a second dedicated design-center at the facility, storage and general office space.

The total office space will cover more than 20,000 square feet, bringing the hangar footprint at Peterborough Airport to more than 100,000 square feet in total when it opens in mid-2019.

Publican House Brewery Launches Limited Release 10th Anniversary Maibock In Celebration Of 10th Anniversary This Month

Publican House Brewery has reached a great milestone this October, celebrating 10 years in business in Peterborough.

The idea for Publican House sprung in 2004 when co-founder Marty Laskaris saw an opportunity in the craft beer industry and over some beers and help from the former head brewer at Kawartha Lakes Brewing Company, hatched a plan.

After several years of renovations, the first beer was poured and growlers were available for sale in October 2008. Initially, beer was available for sale only at its on-site store.

Nowadays, most Publican House brands are available for sale in cans, growlers, bottles and kegs at the Brewery store, select LCBO’s, Beer Stores and grocery stores. Expansion of the brands continues in other areas and regions as well.

To celebrate the 10th Anniversary, Publican House has crafted a limited release beer, the 10th Anniversary Maibock (pictured below), with only 1,000 bottles available. This beer can be purchased in 750ml bottles in the Publican House Retail Store and on tap in the Brew Pub, while supplies last. 

The 10th Anniversary Maibock, at 6% ABV, is golden amber in colour with rich aroma notes of butterscotch, dried apricot, sweetened bread and candied sugar. This uniquely crafted ale is sensibly hopped and malt forward in character, and is slightly sweet with hints of toffee, honey, bread and nut. It is unfiltered, and medium in body with an enjoyable mild finish.

Tenth anniversary celebrations this month culminate with a Pig Roast on Saturday, October 20th from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the Publican House patio.

This event will feature live music, beer specials, free brewery tours and more. The cost is $10 per person and includes a roasted pork sandwich. Tickets are available at the door.

Peterborough-Based Flying Colours Corp. Just Delivered Its 100th Bombardier Challenger Retrofit

Flying Colours Corp.’s Peterborough facility has re-delivered its 100th major retrofit of a Bombardier Challenger model. The Bombardier Challenger 604, delivered in the first week of October, underwent a major overhaul of the cabin, avionics, connectivity and fuselage.

The Peterborough design team worked with the new owner and current operator to create a stylish interior featuring a black and gold palette. In response to the request for a contemporary cabin including seats with improved comfort, the design team adapted Challenger 650-style seat frames, purchased from Rockwell Collins - Interior Systems, to feature molded armrests that arch perfectly to fit the curves of the arm.

Flying Colours has completed 100 Challenger retrofits, with the latest inspired by a gold and black palette and incorporating modified Challenger 650-style seats.

The six reclining individual seats and complementary three place divan were finished using a soft but durable black leather with a perforated insert, medium-beige colored leather accent panels, and a single contrasting seam stitch trim in order to bring a modern, yet sumptuously comfortable feel to the cabin.

The light trims, buckles and control panels feature a matt gold to contrast with the leather. The customized monuments—including side ledges, panels and doors—are finished with a gloss anigre veneer with each fold out table incorporating a matt-gold inlay accent. 

The private owner also took the opportunity to update cabin-connectivity with the Gogo AVANCE L3™ air-to-ground connectivity system installed to provide WiFi access for voice, email, web browsing, moving maps, and a selection of movies and TV programs across the North American region.

Passengers will also enjoy inflight entertainment courtesy of the Rockwell Collins Venue™ system. The high-clarity touchscreen displays and intuitive controls optimize management of the cabin environment. Both crew and passengers can control lighting, temperature and entertainment choices, as well as view Airshow® moving maps, from their own personal digital devices.

The dedicated Peterborough paint shop revitalized the fuselage with a paint job reflecting the interior colors. A partial gold stripe sweeps from the tail to midway along the fuselage and sits above a full black stripe that sweeps in an arc to the front of the aircraft. 

“The owner was upgrading aircraft size and recognized the value in buying a pre-owned jet and customizing it to his style and needs,” says Sean Gillespie, Executive VP Flying Colours Corp. “We’re pleased that our hundredth Challenger project was such an interesting one, it’s a significant achievement for our team.”

8th Annual Bras Around The Building Campaign Launches

The 8th Annual Bras Around The Building Campaign is officially underway supporting the Canadian Cancer Society, breast cancer research and awareness, and the services cancer patients use every day.

Energy 99.7 and Country 105, in partnership with Merrett Home Hardware Building Centre, are once again raising bras and funds during breast cancer awareness month. The campaign will continue through October, concluding on Friday, October 26th.

Throughout the campaign, residents of Peterborough and the Kawarthas are encouraged to donate their gently used bras. For every bra collected, Merrett Home Hardware Building Centre will make a $1 donation, with proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society to support breast cancer research and cancer services.

Bra donations can be dropped off until Thursday, October 25th at the following locations: Energy 99.7/Country 105 (59 George St. N., Peterborough), Merrett Home Hardware Building Centre (1460 Lansdowne St, Peterborough) , My Left Breast (203 Simcoe Street), The Co-operators on Milroy Drive, and the Canadian Cancer Society of Peterborough & District (750 The Kingsway, Unit 2, Peterborough).

On Friday, October 26th, with help from Peterborough Fire Services, collected bras will be strung together around the exterior of the Energy 99.7/Country 105 building in Peterborough as a symbol of support for women battling breast cancer, to honour survivors and to remember those who have lost their battle.

Upon completion of the campaign, a cheque will be presented to the Peterborough and District Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society for breast cancer research based on the final number of bras collected.

Peterborough Petes Wearing Specialty Jerseys As Part Of Alumni Homecoming

More than 65 alumni are returning to Peterborough October 12th to 14th to commemorate their time with the Petes.

As part of this special Alumni Homecoming weekend, the Petes will wear specialty jerseys designed by PTBO Northern Originals against the Windsor Spitfires on October 13th.

Almost the entire 1978-79 Petes team—the only Memorial Cup winning Petes team in franchise history—will be on hand for the special pre-game ceremony on Saturday, October 13 at 7:05 p.m.

The alumni will take part in exclusive events including a mixer, golf and meals. Fans will have the chance to interact with alumni at an all-you-can-eat Petesa Party. (“Petesa” party, clever!)

The Petes specialty theme jerseys pay tribute to the history of the club, and will be auctioned off online in support of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy and Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

“We wanted to include as many eras of Petes history in the design as we could, with the focus being on the 1979 Memorial Cup team but also commemorating all of the team’s alumni,” says Mike Watt, owner of Providence and co-designer of the commemorative jerseys the Petes will wear.

The Norwood Fair Is Celebrating Its 150th Year

The Norwood Fair has always a great family tradition at Thanksgiving, going strong since 1868!

2018 marks its 150th year, and in honour of that this year’s theme is “Proud of the Past, Posed for the Future”. It takes place on October 6th, 7th and 8th in Norwood, just a short drive East from Peterborough.

Electric (Green) City: Peterborough's 7,205 Streetlights Are Going LED

Work has begun to convert the city’s 7,205 streetlights to Smart technology Light Emitting Diode (LED) streetlight fixtures, which will reduce energy use, electricity costs and maintenance costs.

The impact will be as follows…

  • Energy costs reduced by 54%

  • Maintenance costs reduced by 80%

  • Reduced light pollution (the LED fixtures are “Dark Sky Compliant” as all light is directed downward)

  • Better light quality for pedestrians and vehicle traffic

It’s estimated that the conversion to Smart technology LED fixtures will reduce annual electricity costs by 54 percent or by $650,000, and reduce maintenance costs by 80 percent or by $187,000.

The City expects to save an estimated 3,618,570 kilowatt-hours of energy per year, a 70 percent reduction compared to the current energy consumption for City streetlights. The reduction is the equivalent of the typical energy use by 375 homes for an entire year. The annual electricity cost is expected to be reduced to $552,800 from the $1.2 million for the existing streetlights, a savings of $650,000.

LEDs will also help the City reduce maintenance costs by a projected 80 percent because LEDs are a solid-state technology (no moving parts) and last up to four times longer than the City’s existing streetlights.

Maintenance costs will be reduced to an estimated $46,700 a year from the current annual cost of approximately $233,700 for the traditional streetlights, a savings of $187,000.

The level of lighting provided by the LED lights remains the same as previous lights. The difference is LED streetlights provide a safer light source with better visibility to both pedestrians and motorists. They offer better clarity and improve the ability to identify colours at night.

The LED Streetlight Conversion Project includes a change from a drop glass fixture to a flat glass fixture, which changes how light is distributed on the roadway and associated area. This change helps prevent light from spilling or dispersing onto adjacent spaces where it is not intended to be.

The new LED streetlights will be networked to automatically notify the City when there’s a light that’s out or malfunctioning, allowing the City to immediately schedule the work to fix the streetlight.

Work to convert all the lights is scheduled to be completed by December 31st.

Peterborough Museum & Archives' Newest Exhibition Terry Fox: Running To The Heart Of Canada Is On Loan From Canadian Museum of History

Peterborough Museum & Archives' newest exhibition titled Terry Fox: Running to the Heart of Canada is a must see for people of all ages.

The exhibition is on loan from the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec, with support from the Terry Fox Foundation, and will be on-site in Peterborough for public viewing until Sunday, December 9th.

The exhibition provides a unique look at Terry’s epic 143-day, 3,339-mile (5,373-kilometre) journey from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Thunder Bay, Ontario in 1980. It explores Canadians’ deep and abiding affection for Terry and examines his unique place in our collective memory.

Developed by the Canadian Museum of History in partnership with Terry Fox’s family, the exhibition traces Terry’s journey and shows the impact he had on modern Canadian life—the numerous schools, community centres and features of the landscape named for him, and the Canadian coins, stamps and passports bearing his image.

“During the Marathon of Hope and the months that followed, Canadians filled our home in Port Coquitlam, B.C., with scrapbooks, written tributes and gifts reflecting a collective compassion and admiration for Terry's unselfish act,” says Darrell Fox, Terry’s brother. “More than 35 years later, it is time to share the Terry Fox collection and the compelling story that the memorabilia evoke with the world.

The Canadian icon’s coast-to-coast journey in 1980 ended near Thunder Bay, when the cancer that had claimed his leg returned, forcing Terry to abandon the project.

He died a national hero in June 1981, at the age of 22, having collected some $24 million. To date, more than $700 million has been raised in his name for cancer research.

Terry Fox – Running to the Heart of Canada is being presented at The Peterborough Museum & Archives (300 Hunter Street East) from September 29th until December 9th.

The Electric City Special Needs Team Just Made 300 Candles To Help Raise Money For The Team & Build Team Chemistry

The Electric City Maroon & White special needs hockey team gathered at Coach Chris Williams house on Saturday (September 29th) for a candle “pouring party” of 300 homemade candles.

It’s a new fundraising initiative that began with the creation of the “Electric City Candle Company” to assist with the costs of running a special needs sports organization such as ice time, equipment and travel costs.

“I came up with the idea after seeing a Facebook video on a young girl with Down syndrome who started her own candle company in New Zealand,” Coach Williams tells PTBOCanada. “I reached out to them for advice and was given some great feedback and encouragement on how to get everything off the ground.”

With very limited financial sponsorship, the money made through the sales of these candles will help the team but more importantly give the opportunity to kids and adults with special needs to be directly involved with the creation and distribution of something beautiful, a product they made from scratch.

“For me, the initiative is important because it gives the players a sense of pride of accomplishment,” Coach Williams says. “They voted on what scents we would use, the dye colours, and of course were involved with the creation of the candles from start to finish.”

The theme of the 300 handmade soy-based candles made is “Shining A Light On Special Needs”.

It gives the players a chance to get together in a social setting and work together as a team to learn skill sets and build chemistry and confidence—ingredients that will ensure they all have a great season on and off the ice.

The Mason jar style 8.5 oz candles will sell for $10 and are handmade with a focus on seasonal Fall/Winter/Christmas scents including Winterberry, Christmas Garland and Warm Vanilla Sugar. There will be a total of nine different varieties available.

“If we sell the initial trial run of 300, that will give us the chance of getting together again and doing another 300,” Coach Williams tells PTBOCanada.

Players will be selling the candles independently to friends and family, and online sales will be ready by the Thanksgiving weekend through the team’s website electriccityspecialneedshockey.com.
