Trent U Installs New Permeable Parking Spots, First University In Ontario With Green Parking

Trent University will become the first university in Ontario to install permeable grid paving—an environmental innovation made popular in Europe—when they add about 100 parking spots this summer to their Symons Campus in Peterborough.

The environmentally-friendly parking solution is created using 100% recycled plastic, helping to curb plastic pollution as it does not require the use of asphalt—often a byproduct of the petroleum industry. Similar parking systems are being used in countries around the world, in a variety of settings such as agriculture, parks and industrial spaces.

“Our campus is growing and we need to balance that growth with our commitment to the environment,” says Kent Stringham, vice-president, Finance and Administration at Trent University. “This innovative and environmental solution to meeting campus demands boasts a number of ecological benefits including the ability to plant grass within the grid, better drainage, and less required road salt in the winter. It’s a win-win for Trent and for our environment.”

HOW PERMEABLE GRID PAVING SYSTEMS WORK

They are installed as a series of recycled plastic interlocking grid on top of land which can then be filled with grass or gravel. The system offers a host of environmental benefits including reduction of flood risk and increased capacity for storm-water management. The permeable parking grids are weather-resistant, can be plowed, and require far less salt in the winter—significantly lessening impact on nearby animal habitats.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF THIS PROJECT

• utilize 35,640 pounds of recycled plastic
• detain 64,627 gallons of stormwater
• save 162.9 tonnes of CO2, the equivalent of planting 34,295 trees

Peterborough Challenger Special Needs Baseball Making Dreams Come True For Players With Help Of Jays Care Foundation & More

Peterborough Challenger Baseball, a local special needs baseball team, provides an opportunity for children, youth and adults with cognitive and/or physical disabilities to enjoy the full benefits of participating in baseball at a level structured to their abilities. Locally, they have divisions for junior, intermediate and senior levels of play.

Earlier this year, Peterborough Challenger Baseball was invited to play in a Challenger Baseball game at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA against a team from Malden, Mass. this summer.

Seventeen players and buddies were selected, and with the help of individuals and many businesses and organizations in and around Peterborough, in four months they were able to raise $25,000 in order to take these players and their families to Pennsylvania from August 22nd to August 25th.

Among those who stepped up in support was the Jays Care Foundation, who not only provided a monetary donation towards the cost of the bus but also provided full uniforms for the players and buddies including jerseys, pants, socks, and belts.

Recently, the whole team got to go a game through the Jays Care Foundation and even made it onto the Jumbroton.

The players and their families are beginning preparations to depart to Pennsylvania for a game that will not only represent Peterborough, but also Canada at the Little League World Series.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many of the players to play on a stage like this, and for their families to be there watching this moment.

Grassboots Theatre Company Launches First Ever Play

Peterborough’s newest theatre company Grassboots Theatre—created by Peyton Le Barr and Chris Whidden—is set to debut their first ever performance, Repatriation to the Moon, a new work inspired by theatre created by the underground Polish resistance during the WW2.

In Repatriation to the Moon playing at Artspace, a janitor and an engineer fall in love in a shoe factory. One is Polish, the other Italian. The play, set in a time of war, is a comical and heartwarming story of two lovebirds who attempt to escape persecution in the most absurd way imaginable.
