Instagram Celebrity Dog Owen The Griff Will Be On Hand At Humane Society Night Petes Game

The CHL-ranked Peterborough Petes are excited to welcome the Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) as the game’s charity partner for their game against Oshawa this Thursday (December 19th).

They’ll be hosting a silent auction in the north lobby of the PMC with items up for grabs including two dog hampers and a cat hamper which are all filled with treats for furry friends. Owen the Griff, a celebrity dog from Lakefield that has nearly 110,000 followers on Instagram, will be on hand for photo opportunities in the north lobby during the first intermission, as well as making a pre-game appearance.

Fans are encouraged to bring in canned cat and dog food, which will be donated back to the Peterborough Humane Society. PHS will also host a chuck-a-puck, with the winning fan taking home a team autographed Petes jersey.

Pre-game, the Petes will welcome and celebrate the Jones family who have recently adopted a dog from the Humane Society. After losing their beloved dog earlier this year, the family was excited to bring Mocha into their home.

Extreme Cold Alert Issued For The Peterborough Area

With extreme cold in the forecast, the One Roof Community Centre drop-in hours will be extended to 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, December 18th and Thursday, December 19th to provide daytime shelter from the cold, the City of Peterborough says in a release.

One Roof Community Centre, which provides services on behalf of the City and County of Peterborough, is located at 99 Brock Street. Its normal operating hours are noon to 7 p.m. daily. For a full description of meals and other services that One Roof provides, click here.

Under its agreement with the City, One Roof extends its operating hours when the temperature reaches -15C, and Environment Canada’s forecast for Peterborough shows temperatures falling to -25 with windchill in the afternoon on Wednesday and -20C on Thursday.

Peterborough Petes And Peterborough Police Service Announce Community Partnership

The Peterborough Petes have announced a new community partnership with the Peterborough Police Service, whereby Emergency Response Team members will act as mentors and role models to players.

The initiative, called Petes and C.O.P.S. (Community Oriented Partnerships and Support), will see players on the Petes roster matched with members of the Peterborough Police Service (PPS) Emergency Response Team (ERT), along with other members across multiple sections of the PPS.

As part of the partnership, Petes players and PPS members will attend community events together, visit institutional facilities, and visit with sick and less fortunate community members, among other activities. 

“The Petes are very involved in the community, as is our police service,” says Sergeant Laine Schubert. “Although both have a very positive impact, we feel that cooperatively we can have an even greater impact if we can do some things together.”

“With the Petes and PPS being two of the more visible organizations in Peterborough, this will provide our players with great learning opportunities while engaging with our community members,” adds Petes General Manager Mike Oke. “We look forward to working with the PPS and watching the partnership grow.”

Canadian Country Superstar Chad Brownlee Playing Memorial Centre

Sweet Win For Peterborough's Steven Sweet Who Won $250,000 In INSTANT CASH OUT MULTIPLIER

Steven Sweet checked his ticket using the OLG Lottery App and boy was it a sweet moment when he discovered he had won $250,000 in INSTANT CASH OUT MULTIPLIER.

"I had to have a glass of water and sit down when I realized I won," says the 53-year old communications technician, who plans to invest towards retirement.

Peterborough Firefighters Annual Toy Drive Donating $2,000

The Peterborough Professional Firefighters are donating $2,000 to purchase toys from The Toy Shop (176 Hunter Street West) in downtown Peterborough for the annual Salvation Army Toy Drive.

The Toy Shop owner Jean Grant uses the donation to leverage deals for more than $6,000 in toys from her suppliers, who help with the initiative. The firefighters will arrive on Saturday, December 14th at 9:30 a.m., with their firetruck and a crew of firefighters to pick up the toys and deliver them to the Salvation Army.

“Local 169 feels it’s important to participate in events and organizations like the Miracle Broadcast,” says Mike O’Brien, firefighter and executive board member. “It’s a great way to give back and to support those in need in the community, especially the young ones.”

The Peterborough Petes Are Now The No. 7 Ranked Team In Canada

The Peterborough Petes great record this season is getting recognition off the ice, as they have been ranked as the No. 7 team in Canada in the latest CHL rankings.

The Petes have won eight of their past 11 games including last week’s victories over the London Knights and Kingston Frontenacs, and they defeated Hamilton 7-4 Thursday night on home ice at PMC. Their record of 22-7-1-1 has pushed them to the top of Ontario Hockey League standings.

There is a buzz around the team, and a Petes game has become a hot ticket in town.

Last week, the Petes signed General Manager Michael Oke to a two-year contract extension through the conclusion of the 2021-22 season.

Free New Year's Eve Transit Is Being Offered For 5th Consecutive Year

Free transit service on New Year’s Eve is being provided for a 5th consecutive year thanks to a partnership between Wolfe Personal Injury Lawyers and the City of Peterborough.

Ride the bus free of charge on all 12 regular routes between 7:20 p.m. on December 31st and 3:20 a.m. on January 1st The last bus will leave Peterborough’s downtown terminal at 2:40 a.m. Route maps are available here.

Accessible service will also run during the same hours. Accessible trip requests will be accepted until 12:20 a.m. and service will continue until 3:20 a.m. Bookings are accepted on a first come, first served basis. Riders wishing to travel during peak times are encouraged to reserve their trips in advance.

Wolfe Lawyers is also sponsoring a free New Year's Eve Family Skate at the Evinrude Centre (911 Monaghan Rd.). Both ice pads will be open December 31st for a free family fun:

Trent University Rises 14 Spots In Ranking Of World’s Most Sustainable Universities

Trent University’s reputation as a world-leading environmental university continues to grow with the news they have been named among the Top 100 most sustainable university campuses around the world.

The findings in the recently released 2019 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings report demonstrate Trent’s ongoing commitment to reducing the University’s environmental impact as they moved up 14 spots in the international ranking of 780 universities worldwide. Trent also moved up one spot to be a Top 5 sustainable campus in Canada.

“Trent’s rising and competitive position in this global ranking since 2017 really shows our leadership when it comes to the environment,” says Kent Stringham, vice-president of Finance and Administration at Trent.

Trent’s ranking as the 66th greenest campus in the world and fifth in Canada is based on the University’s performance across six categories: education and research, setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, and transportation.

Trent ranked first in Canada and 10th in the world for the waste category in the report. The University diverts more than 80 percent of its waste away from landfill.

Trent sent 30 tonnes less to landfills just last year, helped by the implementation of a $7 membership to use eco-trays, a reusable container at food vendors on campus, plus a $1 charge on single-use meal containers.

Notably, Trent is also an entirely LED campus having installed 55,447 LED lightbulbs since 2016.

All of these efforts by Trent and more are factored into the GreenMetric rankings, the first and only university rankings in the world that measure each participating university’s commitment in developing an “environmentally friendly” infrastructure.

“I am so impressed by Trent’s achievement moving up 14 spots in the global rankings in a single year,” says Shelley Strain, sustainability coordinator at Trent University. “Every year, it gets harder to score well as new metrics or subcategories are added each year, standards are raised, and scores for previous initiatives can expire. Our 2019 ranking is a reflection of our continuous improvement.”
