The event runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Fans can meet players from the women’s and men’s teams, kick a ball with them and mingle with the athletes.

Players will sign autographs and have their pictures taken with fans during the event.

“The ECFC player meet and greet is an opportunity to interact with fans on a bit of a personal level so that they can get to know some of us as players and as humans and we can do the same,” said Zach Ellis-Hayden, ECFC defender. “The community has backed us since the beginning, win or lose so it’s important that we can give back even if it’s in a little way.”

The women’s team sits in sixth place in the standings with a 9-6-2 record. The men have a 6-5-2 record and sit in ninth place in the league.

Electric City Football Club Supporters, The Current 1819, Back In the Stands This Saturday

After an investigation of an alleged racial slur committed on Electric City Football Club’s (ECFC) supporter group ‘The Current 1819’ on June 15, are returning to the stands for this Saturday’s men’s game against the Woodbridge Strikers.

The team issued a statement regarding the 1819’s return as League1 Ontario as completed their investigation.

“Electric City FC is excited to welcome back The Current 1819 to Fleming Field for this weekend’s Men’s ECFC match against Woodbridge Strikers as the team makes a push for the playoffs!

We thank them for their support and co-operation during the investigation which is now complete with an official statement expected by the League and both Clubs next week. We also want to thank The Current 1819 leadership and its members for working with us to ensure we are creating a positive, enjoyable and exciting ECFC game-day experience for all.” - Electric City Football Club

The incident occurred during a women’s game against the Simcoe County Rovers FC when a member of 1819 allegedly hurled a racial slur at the opposing team’s goalkeeper.

Several players have condemned the supposed actions and say that racism has no place in the sport in prior interviews. During the first 12 seconds of the following men’s match on June 22, ECFC, BVB IA Waterloo and the officials took a knee in silent protest of the incident and display a sign of unity.

“That's a very serious matter, very sensitive and I stand with my fellow teammates collectively,” said Ethan Gopaul, ECFC forward. “There's no place for that here and we both agree that it's very important that it's made clear that we both support that.”

“We pretty much wanted to show both on and off the field that there's no tolerance for that," said Josh Panello, ECFC defender. "Collectively as a group, that's one of the best ways to show it is in front of our home fans.”

The supporters released a statement a day after the controversial game.

“The Current 1819 set out from the start to be an inclusive group of passionate football supporters. Our goal is to create an environment that our players feel supported in, and visiting teams dread coming to, because they know we are the 12th person for our team.

However, there is a line. We strongly condemn any acts of racism or bigotry.

The code of conduct that covers fan behaviour at Fleming Stadium was co-created by Electric City FC and the Current. Any individual members found to be in violation will be asked to leave the group and supporters' end of the stadium. This has been our policy from the first home match. None of our members, or any of the security staff present in our section were aware of any racist language from the Current last night. The Current will be giving our full support to the club and League One Ontario in all investigations about last night's allegations, as racism has no home in football.” - David Barney, The Current 1819

The men’s game kickoff is at 3:00 p.m. against the Woodbridge Strikers at Fleming College.

Electric City Football Club Women and Men's Teams Snap Small Winless Streaks with Shutouts

Both the Women and Men’s teams of the Electric City Football Club (ECFC) found themselves back in the win column with shutout victories on Wednesday night.

The women’s team won in a 4-0 rout against the Burlington SC Individuals. They had a draw and two losses coming into the match.

It became the Kayla McQueen show for the first half as she netted two goals for ECFC in the 18th and 34th minute of the match. She leads the team with 10 goals on the season.

ECFC continued their relentless assault with Aysia King getting her second goal of the season in the 64th minute. Captain Holly O’Neill got the insurance marker with her eighth goal of the year, scoring in extra time.

ECFC goalkeeper Breanne Carreiro posted a shutout in her first start as starting keeper Mykaela Volpe had started in all of the team’s 12 previous matches.

“I thought we put in a good team effort. Everyone worked hard both offensively and defensively and in turn, we walked away with four goals, a clean sheet and three points,” said midfielder Angelika Mihalopulos, “It was a successful night and hopefully we can bring that same energy to what should be a good match up on Saturday.”

The women move to a 7-5-1 record and are 6th overall.

The men shared similar success with a 3-0 victory over BVB IA Waterloo at Fleming College.

During the first 12 seconds of the match, both teams and the officials took a knee to stand against racism. The gesture was in reference to the ECFC women’s match last Wednesday where a member of the Current 1819, the team’s fan club, allegedly hurled a racial slur at the Simcoe County Rovers FC goalkeeper.

The kneeling was a collaboration between the players from both teams.

“We pretty much wanted to show both on and off the field that there's no tolerance for that," said Josh Panello, ECFC defender. "Collectively as a group, that's one of the best ways to show it is in front of our home fans.”

“That's a very serious matter, very sensitive and I stand with my fellow teammates collectively,” said Ethan Gopaul, ECFC forward. “There's no place for that here and we both agree that it's very important that it's made clear that we both support that.”

The team designed t-shirts with the words, “United Against Racism” that were worn by players prior to kickoff and to staff before and during the game.

Striker Jordan Brown led the charge with two goals in less than three minutes in the first half. He scored during the 24th and 26th minute to keep ECFC with the lead into the half. Brown almost completed the natural hat trick with an uncontested header but Waterloo’s keeper denied him with a fantastic save.

ECFC Keeper Quillan Roberts was tested early with two high-scoring chances from Waterloo but was able to stop one chance and force the opposition to shoot wide on the other shot.

Electric City continued to build on their lead in the second half as Gopaul scored his first of the season with a pass from Brown for an easy goal in the 80th minute. The goal sealed the 3-0 win for ECFC.

“I'm glad JB made an unselfish decision considering he already had two goals,” said Gopaul. “He could have got a third for the hat trick but he decided to slip it to me for an easy one and that's really all him on that one. Luckily it snuck under the crossbar for my first goal so I'm happy with that.”

The win snapped a two-game winless streak that moves the men to a 4-4-2 record. The men’s team has been undefeated at home.

“We're complete and we wanted to be good in all areas of the pitch,” said Randy Ribiero, ECFC interim coach. “It was nice to see it all come together and the boys defended fantastically and we really limited the amount of opportunities that the opponent was able to create.”

The women are at home against NDC Ontario at Fleming College this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The men go on the road to play Hamilton United on the same day at 8:00 p.m.

Electric City Football Club Teams to Compete in Inaugural Trent Severn Cup

An early rivalry between the Electric City Football Club (ECFC) and Simcoe County Rovers FC has sparked the Trent Severn Cup for the two newest League1 Ontario teams announced Monday.

Photo courtesy of Electric City Football Club and David Pickering.

The idea for the Trent Severn Cup was sparked local soccer districts, East Central Ontario Soccer Association (ECOSA) and Huronia District Soccer Association HDSA, that the two League1 teams represent.

“Both franchises have shown a great desire to compete at the highest standards and strive to participate at the highest level in the Canadian Soccer landscape,” said John Copp, HDSA president. “The Districts want to help kick off these franchises' inaugural season and provide the groundwork for what we expect will be a long (friendly) rivalry between two top League 1 Ontario Clubs.”

The cup features a unique format where the winning club is based on the combined score of both the Men’s and Women’s matches each season. If the score after the two matches remains tied, the competition will then be decided by a penalty shootout in the second match.

“Both Clubs share their District's vision to positively impact soccer within their communities and help provide meaningful pathways for players, coaches, and administrators from the grassroots to the semi-professional and professional levels,” said Leslee Bax, ECOSA president. “Both local soccer districts are extremely excited to have semi-professional soccer within our Districts and to see the competition play out for the first time.”

The women play first on Wednesday at 8 p.m followed by the men on July 23rd at 3 p.m. with both games at Fleming College.

“These are the type of competitions that will hopefully help the game grow in the regions and create excitement for the fans and the players,” said Rob Jenkins, ECFC president. “We are very thankful for the two districts support and work in putting this together. We have great respect for the Simcoe County Rovers project and are excited to have an annual competition between two ambitious clubs.”

The trophy (purchased by the two districts) will be on display at the women’s match and will be presented to the winning club at the conclusion of the men’s match.

“As the game continues to grow in a positive direction throughout the country these are the type of relationships and cultures that will help define success and professional development,” said Julian de Guzman, Simcoe County Rovers president.

Electric City Football Club Women's Team Fall to North Toronto Nitros, 3-1

It was the first home loss for the Electric City Football Club (ECFC) women’s team after the North Toronto Nitros got a 3-1 win on Wednesday night.

The loss puts ECFC at a 3-2 record and tied for seventh in the league of 20 teams.

The Nitros struck first as Olivia Smith scored off a penalty kick in the 13th minute to gain the lead.

Toronto extended their score early in the second half as Morgan Fenton crashed the net and scored off a pass to net the second goal in the 48th minute.

Electric City quickly responded seven minutes later as Kayla McQueen scored off a fast break to put Peterborough on the scoreboard. The goal was McQueen’s team-leading fifth goal of the season and fourth-leading in the league.

"Something like that uplifts your whole team and it gives you another push to go forward and that's really what we needed at that moment.,” said Hailey Walsh, ECFC midfielder.

Toronto was able to seal their victory with a third goal as Smith scored in the 72nd minute (her second of the match).

Peterborough had scoring chances with a late push but came up short in the final minutes of the game.

ECFC head coach Randy Ribeiro said Toronto was the better team that night but had faith that ECFC can stand up to any opponent.

"I have full trust in the players that we have. I think they're all fantastic. said Riberio. "They were brought in here because they fit in with what it is what we're trying to do here so I know what this team is capable of. It's one step in a long journey."

The women’s team plays Guelph Union next on the road on Sunday at 4 p.m. The men’s team plays the Prostars FC at home this Saturday at 3 p.m.

Electric City Football Club Women's Team Dazzles In Home Opener

The Electric City Football Club (ECFC) women’s team joins the men in having a perfect home opener at Fleming College on Saturday afternoon.

ECFC defeated the Blue Devils FC, 4-1 while breaking the League1 Ontario women’s attendance record of 1,009 fans on a hot afternoon. The record shattered the old one of 900 which was a league final at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan.

"To see that we have the equal from the community for our women's team as we do our men's team, it means a lot for the girls," said Randy Ribiero, ECFC women's head coach. "The attendance record that was previously held at a League1 final, I can only imagine if we get to August and host a playoff game here, the atmosphere we're going to have."

"I've never felt anything like this before," said Kayla McQueen, ECFC striker. "I had a fan come up to me and asked me for an autograph and I cried right after. I'm so happy to be here and I'm excited for the season."

ECFC captain Holly O’Neill opened the scoring at the 25th minute with McQueen extending the lead to 2-0, two minutes later. Both players traded another pair of goals in the contest — with their second goals in the second half — to their 4-1 win. Emily Porteous of the Blue Devils scored the visiting team’s lone goal in the ‘73 minute.

"We knew we were going to have lots of supporters so we just wanted to play with lots of pride, play for ourselves and then play for our supporters," said O'Neill.

The men’s team played an away game on the same day, losing to Unionville 2-1.

The women’s team faces the North Toronto Nitros on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. at Fleming College.

Electric City Football Club Men's Team Shines Under the Bright Lights in Home Opener

It was an opening night that could not have been any better for the Electric City Football Club (ECFC).

The men’s team won their first home game at Fleming College in front of a record-breaking crowd, 3-0 against Windsor TFC on Saturday night.

The hometown team played in front of a record-breaking League1 Ontario attendance of 1,565 fans.

ECFC striker Jordan Brown quickly got Peterborough on the board with a goal in the first two minutes.

Brown got an encore, scoring his second goal of the match in the 12th minute to put ECFC up 2-0.

"I think the way we moved the ball, we were very patient and it's something we needed to focus on," said Brown. "We just need to keep doing what need to do and we'll be fine going forward."

Fans didn’t wait long for another exciting moment as winger David Schaefer netted another goal in the 14th minute to give ECFC a 3-0 lead. The team carried that score into the second half.

"Obviously we took a defeat last week and the response is what we wanted to look for," said Jamie Sherwood, ECFC men's head coach.

ECFC had troubles early in the second half including a penalty kick for Windsor in the 51st minute. ECFC goalkeeper Quillan Roberts made a diving save to continue the team’s shutout.

Midfielder Mohammad Reaz Nafar got ECFC their only red card of the game at the 64th minute of the game, leaving the team with only 10 players for the duration of the match.

"We scored in the first fifteen minutes, three goals but there are moments in the game where the other team had chances and had a bit more control," said Zach Ellis-Hayden, ECFC defender. "I think we can get better at maintaining the lead and staying composed in the match and maybe have control throughout 90 minutes rather than the first 15 minutes then teetering off."

ECFC defended Windsor and limited their scoring opportunities to get their first win in men’s franchise history.

"What I was really pleased about tonight is everything we put into practice — not just this week but the last five weeks being together — is being illustrated to the whole city in front of a record crowd,” said Sherwood.

The men’s next game is next Saturday on the road against Unionville Milliken FC while the women’s team has their home opener on the same date against the Blue Devils FC at 3:00 p.m.

27-Year-old Abby Hunt, from Cheshire, England joins ECFC after most recently playing with Football Club United of Manchester. The former Stoke City midfielder grew up playing for Everton Football Club Centre of Excellence and featured for their reserve team before moving on to Bradford City and Stoke City.

“Abby is a great addition into our team for this season. She brings in a lot of experience playing at the next level in England,” said Randy Ribeiro, ECFC Women’s head coach. “We will look for her to bring a level of maturity and composure into our team combined with her leadership skills both on and off the pitch. She is a technical, box-to-box midfielder that possesses strong ability on both sides of the ball.”

Hunt spent three years as a U Sport Student-Athlete playing for the University of Windsor Lancers.

“As soon as I spoke to Coach Randy, I knew that ECFC was an organization that I wanted to be a part of. His enthusiasm and the Club’s ambitions for female footballers are what made me truly believe that this is the right decision for me and my career.” Hunt explained, “Fans will see a committed, determined and attacking-minded style of football from me alongside an understanding of defensive responsibilities and hard work.”

Trent Excalibur player Mariah Shaw is a Peterborough native and earned her spot on the roster through attending the open tryouts and impressing at training camp. The 19-year-old grew up playing in Northumberland before moving on and playing for Darlington Soccer Club.

“Mariah is a player that attended our open tryouts and was a player that stood out immediately. She brings a lot of energy into the team and is a pleasure to work with,” said Ribeiro. “She is a versatile player that I can see playing in a number of roles for us throughout the season. She is a fantastic addition to our team this season and we are really excited to watch Mariah grow and develop in our environment.”

During her time with Darlington, she was a consistent call-up to League 1 side Darby FC and was later signed to the team in 2021.

“I joined ECFC because I wanted to take my game to the next level and I knew as soon as I started following the ECFC franchise that this club was going to be something special,” said Shaw. “I never want to feel comfortable with my skill level. Knowing I have the opportunity to be coached by someone that has been successful in League 1 was something I simply could not pass up.”

Acadia University captain, Madicynn Harnish. The 23-year-old was a U Sport standout and Atlantic University Sport All-Star this past season. The Lower Sackville, NS native played and started in all 12 matches for Acadia University leading the team along with another ECFC signing Lauren Jodrey to an AUS Championship.

“Madicynn is another top player that we have brought into our program here at ECFC. She is a technically gifted midfielder that is always looking to get on the ball,” said Ribeiro. “Her ability to dictate the tempo of a match is what really attracted us to sign Madicynn for this season and we are excited to see what she can bring to our club.”

Harnish originally committed to Jacksonville University in NCAA Division 1 in 2017 and was selected to the ASUN Division 1 All-Freshman team.

“Being part of Electric City FC means levelling up and playing with and against some of the best players in Canada,” said Harnish. “To be part of a new franchise that is working so hard and doing so much to grow recognition for women's soccer in Canada is really special to me.”

Electric City Football Club Draws With League1 Ontario Defending Champions In Debut Match

The Electric City Football Club went toe-to-toe with the defending League1 Ontario champion Guelph United.

The men’s team forced a 0-0 draw in their season opener at Guelph University’s Alumni Stadium on Thursday night.

Electric City came within inches of the club’s first-ever franchise goal as Tomas Ribeiro had a free kick that sailed just over the crossbar and into the netting over the goal posts in extra time. Daniel Oshana also had a close call for ECFC shooting just wide of the net in the 90th minute.

The team sent two busloads of fans to the game that gave the atmosphere of a home game as ‘Electric City” chants filled the stands throughout the match.

"The support made the away field look more like a home field," said Jamie Sherwood, ECFC men's head coach. "The noise that they created really stimulated the players and helped the players at moments in the game."

“The match versus Guelph last night was another big milestone for Electric City in this amazing journey we are on,” said Rob Jenkins, ECFC president. “It was amazing to see the players in the ECFC kits and the fans all in yellow supporting the club. The players showed their quality on the pitch by outplaying the defending champions and playing with the character that will make the community proud.”

Electric City controlled most of the game causing Guelph to play aggressively. That physical play resulted in six yellow cards for the defending champs.

"We were the ones in control of the game and that was the message that we gave to the players going into the game," said Sherwood. "We wanted to control the game as much as possible. Control the game, control the environment, control the opposition and control the way that we can play."

Electric City despite not scoring a goal and getting a draw, played a favourable game having less than three weeks of training camp. Sherwood was introduced as the team’s head coach on April 4 ahead of the team’s first day of training camp.

"It shows what this group is capable of," reflected Sherwood. "It shows absolutely where our baseline is now; we know our standard. If we can't do that week in and week out, we won't be where we believe we should be at the end of the season."

The next ECFC’s men’s game is April 30 against the North Toronto Nitros at Downsview Park 2. Their home opener on May 7 at 8 p.m. against Windsor TFC at the Fleming Sports Complex.

The women’s team debuts on Saturday L1O Premier Division debut Saturday on the road at Markham’s Alliance United at 3 p.m. Their first home game is against Oakville’s Blue Devils FC on May 14 at 3 p.m. at Fleming.

Electric City Football Club Sign Three Players to Finalize Men's Team

The men’s team is set for the Electric City Football Club (ECFC) for their inaugural 2022 League 1 Ontario season as they signed Josh Penello, David Schaefer and midfielder Yuki Mandai as the team’s final signings on Tuesday.

Penello made the team after attending the open tryouts on April 2nd during a two-week training camp trial period. He played in a number of positions including fullback and midfield in the friendly last week against the Club’s U21 Reserve team Skillz FC before officially signing with the team.

Penello was a two-time OCAA All-Star and a two-time MVP during his college career with the Fleming Knights. Photo courtesy of ECFC.

“Josh is a perfect example of what we hope to bring to the youth soccer community in Peterborough,” said Rob Jenkins, ECFC president. “At a young age, he had to leave Peterborough to compete at a higher level and develop his skills to try to reach the next level. Our hope is that by bringing these opportunities to Peterborough we are going to see more players like Josh able to reach the next level right here in their hometown.”

The Peterborough native spent some time playing in the Toronto FC Academy system and came back to Peterborough with Cavan FC. During his time there, Penello led his team in winning the Ontario Soccer league’s Provincial East title in 2019, to gain promotion to the OSL Elite league.

“Growing up in the Peterborough area and wanting higher competition in soccer meant you had to travel to find it,” said Panello. “Having ECFC being developed in my hometown made me want to be a part of this franchise and see where it can take me and this city.”

Schaefer registered eight points in his third season with MRU. Photo courtesy of ECFC.

ECFC signed Mount Royal University striker David Schaefer. Schaefer is a 21-year-old attacker from Berlin, Germany and played for famous German Club BFC Dynamo Berlin with the U19’s before moving to Canada for school in 2018 and spent time with SV Empor Berlin during 2020.

“David is a player who the coaches were very impressed with during his trial here at ECFC. He went through a lot to get here and that is also very impressive. He was battling illness for a number of weeks prior to the tryout, he flew himself across the country and paid his own way to be here to be part of ECFC.” said Jenkins, “He is a clinical striker who will add to an already exciting group of attacking players at ECFC.”

Schaefer just finished his third year at MRU where he finished the season with seven goals in 12 games. He played his most recent club football with Peachtree City MOBA in Georgia in the USL 2.

This is a professional environment that I am excited to thrive in,” said Schaefer. “The fans can expect to see a disciplined and intelligent attacker. I am a technical player that covers a lot of distance and has a good understanding of the game, and I will be giving it my all to help this club.”

Mandai scored four goals in a five-game stretch with the South Coast Flame FC from July 27 to Aug. 24. in 2019. Photo courtesy of ECFC.

Japanese midfielder Yuki Mandai rounds out the final signings for the men’s team. The 26-year-old joins ECFC after moving to Canada on his own in December in search of a professional club to play for.

He attended the open tryouts on April 2nd and got the invite to training camp.

“Yuki has come in and really showed us his personality on the ball and his values without the ball,” said Jamie Sherwood, ECFC Men’s Head Coach. “It is amazing that a player who has played on other continents has chosen Electric City FC as his home and we cannot wait to see what he brings to our game model.”

Mandai was playing for Tokyo International University while completing his studies. Upon graduation, he travelled to Australia where he signed a contract and played in the National Premier League with South Coast Flames FC in 2019. Mandai finished the season scoring six goals in 23 matches.

“I was interested in Electric City FC because of the club's project. After understanding what it is the club is aspiring to do, I registered for the open tryouts and was invited into the team’s training camp.” said Mandai. “After attending the team's training sessions, I immediately knew I wanted to play for this club.”

ECFC begins their 2022 League1 Ontario season on the road against the defending-champion Guelph United on Thursday night.
