Electric City Football Club Men's Team Remains Undefeated at Home With 3-3 Draw

With the home undefeated streak on the line, the Electric City Football Club (ECFC) men’s team kept that intact but in the worst way possible as they drew 3-3 to Burlington SC on Wednesday night.

Electric City struck early as striker Jordan Brown scored in the third minute, marking his team-leading eighth goal of the season. He received a leading pass, beating a Burlington defender and then keeper Brandon Kerr to put ECFC on the board 1-0.

Ethan Gopaul quickly tacked on a second goal after ECFC forced a turnover in the offensive zone. Brown made the assist to a sprinting Gopaul to make it 2-0 in the tenth minute, his third of the season.

ECFC kept the pressure going with another Jordan Brown goal in the 31st minute to make it 3-0 into the second half. The goal came as he received a sideline pass and dashed through the middle of the defence and chipped it over the keeper.

“The movement, the patience and buildup and exploring the spaces they wanted to give us, I think we executed well and we took advantage of the chances we were able to create,” said Randy Ribeiro, ECFC head coach regarding the first half.

Burlington looked like a completely different team according to Ribeiro in the second half as they broke the shutout almost immediately. They quickly got on the board in the 47th minute thanks to Augustus Oku, beating ECFC keeper Quillan Roberts high.

The visitors struck again after being awarded a penalty kick. Oku netted his second of the game after he was able to beat Roberts again with a shot through the middle to close the gap 3-2 in the 62nd minute.

Brown almost got a hat trick with a header right in front of the keeper but was deflected wide in the 70th minute.

ECFC Defender Caden Rogozinski almost sealed the game with a header off a corner kick however it bounced off the ground and over the net to keep it a one-goal lead.

In extra time, ECFC fouled Burlington which resulted in a second penalty kick. Several ECFC players were protesting the call but it stood.

Oku completed the hat trick, beating Roberts’s right side to tie the match and come back from a 3-0 deficit. The whistle blew immediately after ECFC kicked off after the game-tying goal.

“We haven't been great in second halves,” said Jordan Webb, ECFC winger. “We had a hard time controlling the game so I guess we got to look at film and see how to get better with that.”

“We just have to continue to maintain consistent performances,” said Ribeiro. “We have to continue preparing and training well like we have been week in and week out and showing up on game day and being able to put on performances to collect maximum points. We can only control the games that we play in and we got to make sure we take care of business moving forward."

The men’s team goes on the road against North Mississauga SC this Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The women will have their last home game of the season on the same day against BVB IA Waterloo at 3 p.m. at Fleming College.

Electric City Football Club Supporters, The Current 1819, Back In the Stands This Saturday

After an investigation of an alleged racial slur committed on Electric City Football Club’s (ECFC) supporter group ‘The Current 1819’ on June 15, are returning to the stands for this Saturday’s men’s game against the Woodbridge Strikers.

The Current 1819 enter the stands to drum beats and smoke bombs prior to each ECFC home game kickoff. Photo by Luke Best.

The team issued a statement regarding the 1819’s return as League1 Ontario as completed their investigation.

“Electric City FC is excited to welcome back The Current 1819 to Fleming Field for this weekend’s Men’s ECFC match against Woodbridge Strikers as the team makes a push for the playoffs!

We thank them for their support and co-operation during the investigation which is now complete with an official statement expected by the League and both Clubs next week. We also want to thank The Current 1819 leadership and its members for working with us to ensure we are creating a positive, enjoyable and exciting ECFC game-day experience for all.” - Electric City Football Club

The incident occurred during a women’s game against the Simcoe County Rovers FC when a member of 1819 allegedly hurled a racial slur at the opposing team’s goalkeeper.

Several players have condemned the supposed actions and say that racism has no place in the sport in prior interviews. During the first 12 seconds of the following men’s match on June 22, ECFC, BVB IA Waterloo and the officials took a knee in silent protest of the incident and display a sign of unity.

“That's a very serious matter, very sensitive and I stand with my fellow teammates collectively,” said Ethan Gopaul, ECFC forward. “There's no place for that here and we both agree that it's very important that it's made clear that we both support that.”

“We pretty much wanted to show both on and off the field that there's no tolerance for that," said Josh Panello, ECFC defender. "Collectively as a group, that's one of the best ways to show it is in front of our home fans.”

The supporters released a statement a day after the controversial game.

“The Current 1819 set out from the start to be an inclusive group of passionate football supporters. Our goal is to create an environment that our players feel supported in, and visiting teams dread coming to, because they know we are the 12th person for our team.

However, there is a line. We strongly condemn any acts of racism or bigotry.

The code of conduct that covers fan behaviour at Fleming Stadium was co-created by Electric City FC and the Current. Any individual members found to be in violation will be asked to leave the group and supporters' end of the stadium. This has been our policy from the first home match. None of our members, or any of the security staff present in our section were aware of any racist language from the Current last night. The Current will be giving our full support to the club and League One Ontario in all investigations about last night's allegations, as racism has no home in football.” - David Barney, The Current 1819

The men’s game kickoff is at 3:00 p.m. against the Woodbridge Strikers at Fleming College.

Electric City Football Club Women and Men's Teams Snap Small Winless Streaks with Shutouts

Both the Women and Men’s teams of the Electric City Football Club (ECFC) found themselves back in the win column with shutout victories on Wednesday night.

The women’s team won in a 4-0 rout against the Burlington SC Individuals. They had a draw and two losses coming into the match.

It became the Kayla McQueen show for the first half as she netted two goals for ECFC in the 18th and 34th minute of the match. She leads the team with 10 goals on the season.

ECFC continued their relentless assault with Aysia King getting her second goal of the season in the 64th minute. Captain Holly O’Neill got the insurance marker with her eighth goal of the year, scoring in extra time.

ECFC goalkeeper Breanne Carreiro posted a shutout in her first start as starting keeper Mykaela Volpe had started in all of the team’s 12 previous matches.

“I thought we put in a good team effort. Everyone worked hard both offensively and defensively and in turn, we walked away with four goals, a clean sheet and three points,” said midfielder Angelika Mihalopulos, “It was a successful night and hopefully we can bring that same energy to what should be a good match up on Saturday.”

The women move to a 7-5-1 record and are 6th overall.

The men shared similar success with a 3-0 victory over BVB IA Waterloo at Fleming College.

During the first 12 seconds of the match, both teams and the officials took a knee to stand against racism. The gesture was in reference to the ECFC women’s match last Wednesday where a member of the Current 1819, the team’s fan club, allegedly hurled a racial slur at the Simcoe County Rovers FC goalkeeper.

The kneeling was a collaboration between the players from both teams.

“We pretty much wanted to show both on and off the field that there's no tolerance for that," said Josh Panello, ECFC defender. "Collectively as a group, that's one of the best ways to show it is in front of our home fans.”

“That's a very serious matter, very sensitive and I stand with my fellow teammates collectively,” said Ethan Gopaul, ECFC forward. “There's no place for that here and we both agree that it's very important that it's made clear that we both support that.”

The team designed t-shirts with the words, “United Against Racism” that were worn by players prior to kickoff and to staff before and during the game.

Striker Jordan Brown led the charge with two goals in less than three minutes in the first half. He scored during the 24th and 26th minute to keep ECFC with the lead into the half. Brown almost completed the natural hat trick with an uncontested header but Waterloo’s keeper denied him with a fantastic save.

ECFC Keeper Quillan Roberts was tested early with two high-scoring chances from Waterloo but was able to stop one chance and force the opposition to shoot wide on the other shot.

Electric City continued to build on their lead in the second half as Gopaul scored his first of the season with a pass from Brown for an easy goal in the 80th minute. The goal sealed the 3-0 win for ECFC.

“I'm glad JB made an unselfish decision considering he already had two goals,” said Gopaul. “He could have got a third for the hat trick but he decided to slip it to me for an easy one and that's really all him on that one. Luckily it snuck under the crossbar for my first goal so I'm happy with that.”

The win snapped a two-game winless streak that moves the men to a 4-4-2 record. The men’s team has been undefeated at home.

“We're complete and we wanted to be good in all areas of the pitch,” said Randy Ribiero, ECFC interim coach. “It was nice to see it all come together and the boys defended fantastically and we really limited the amount of opportunities that the opponent was able to create.”

The women are at home against NDC Ontario at Fleming College this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The men go on the road to play Hamilton United on the same day at 8:00 p.m.

ECFC Men And Women Both Unable To Secure A Win This Weekend

The Electric City FC Men’s and Women’s sides were unable to pick up points over the weekend. The ECFC Women fell 1-0 to FC London on Saturday at Fleming College, after the Men fell 3-1 to Scrosoppi SC on Friday night in Milton.

The ECFC Women (6-5-1) fought hard but were unable to come out on top against the League 1 Ontario leaders FC London (10-1-1) on Saturday afternoon. ECFC and FC London battled the wind in a scoreless first half that saw ECFC control possession and create many positive chances. Both goalkeepers came up with key saves to keep the game scoreless through the first 45 minutes.

The tie was broken in the 84th minute when FC London’s leading scorer Julia Benati scored on a long-distance shot, her 8th tally of the season.

“We were excited for this game, playing against a good opponent coming in, we had a chance to show that we can compete with the best in this league, and I thought we did,” said head coach Randy Ribeiro. “I thought we were unfortunate to concede a goal late, but sometimes the ball does not bounce your way.”

Saturday’s match against FC London completed a string of 3 matches in 7 days for ECFC, and although they were only able to accrue 1 point in the standings, Coach Ribeiro liked a lot of what his club showed in their matchups against both Simcoe County and FC London.

Forward Aysia King was named the Marks Work Warehouse Hardest Working Player of the Match.

“She is a fantastic player; she is one of the top young players in this league and she has shown that in her performances all season. She has done jobs for us out of position and now she is in her natural position and showing that she is a threat.”

ECFC Women head to Burlington for their next match on Wednesday night when they face Burlington SC (0-11-0) in an 8 p.m. kickoff.

On Friday night in Milton, the ECFC Men (3-4-2) dominated possession and had numerous chances to score but ultimately fell 3-1 to Scrosoppi SC (4-6-1) in League1 Men’s action.

ECFC trailed early in the match after Anthony Wright found the net for his first goal of the season in the 9th minute of action. ECFC was able to respond in the 25th minute, when Reza Nafar tied the game, with his 2nd goal of the season and continued to threaten the entire half, but was unable to put one past the Scrosoppi keeper. In the second half, the men continued their pressure but again could not find the back of the net, only for Scrosoppi to hit them on the counter twice to seal the game with Cyrus Rollocks and Jaedyn Saunders scoring goals.

Coach Ribeiro said that although he thought his team deserved a better result based off their play, the bottom line is that they did not find ways to score and that’s what decides games.

“That’s the unfortunate part and something that is very difficult to deal with you try to figure out how to fix it and at the end of the day we need to find a way to win games and we are not going to come out and make excuses. We need to find a way to put the ball in the net and we did not do that.”

Friday night’s loss compounded a troubling trend for ECFC as they have still not been able to register a victory on the road this season. Through their first 6 road matches, ECFC sits with an 0-4-2 record away from home. Ribeiro said his team will try to wipe the slate clean and head back to the drawing board as they prepare for their next matchup.

“You know what that is something that I have learned, the quickest way to forget about the game is to play the next one. It is a quick turnaround for the men, it is something we haven’t really had to experience yet this season, so we will reflect and look back at our previous match and what went well and what didn’t and prepare like we do for any other match.”

ECFC will be back on the pitch on Wednesday night when they return home where they are undefeated on the season to host BVB IA Waterloo (4-4-1) in an 8 p.m. kickoff at Fleming College. Tickets are available at electriccityfc.com/tickets and at the gate.

Electric City Football Club Teams to Compete in Inaugural Trent Severn Cup

An early rivalry between the Electric City Football Club (ECFC) and Simcoe County Rovers FC has sparked the Trent Severn Cup for the two newest League1 Ontario teams announced Monday.

Photo courtesy of Electric City Football Club and David Pickering.

The idea for the Trent Severn Cup was sparked local soccer districts, East Central Ontario Soccer Association (ECOSA) and Huronia District Soccer Association HDSA, that the two League1 teams represent.

“Both franchises have shown a great desire to compete at the highest standards and strive to participate at the highest level in the Canadian Soccer landscape,” said John Copp, HDSA president. “The Districts want to help kick off these franchises' inaugural season and provide the groundwork for what we expect will be a long (friendly) rivalry between two top League 1 Ontario Clubs.”

The cup features a unique format where the winning club is based on the combined score of both the Men’s and Women’s matches each season. If the score after the two matches remains tied, the competition will then be decided by a penalty shootout in the second match.

“Both Clubs share their District's vision to positively impact soccer within their communities and help provide meaningful pathways for players, coaches, and administrators from the grassroots to the semi-professional and professional levels,” said Leslee Bax, ECOSA president. “Both local soccer districts are extremely excited to have semi-professional soccer within our Districts and to see the competition play out for the first time.”

The women play first on Wednesday at 8 p.m followed by the men on July 23rd at 3 p.m. with both games at Fleming College.

“These are the type of competitions that will hopefully help the game grow in the regions and create excitement for the fans and the players,” said Rob Jenkins, ECFC president. “We are very thankful for the two districts support and work in putting this together. We have great respect for the Simcoe County Rovers project and are excited to have an annual competition between two ambitious clubs.”

The trophy (purchased by the two districts) will be on display at the women’s match and will be presented to the winning club at the conclusion of the men’s match.

“As the game continues to grow in a positive direction throughout the country these are the type of relationships and cultures that will help define success and professional development,” said Julian de Guzman, Simcoe County Rovers president.

Mixed Results For Electric City Football As Men Tie And Women Face A Tough Loss This Weekend

A busy weekend of ECFC action yielded mixed results, as the Men’s side drew Master's FA 2-2 on the road, while the Women’s side took a tough 2-1 home loss against Tecumseh SC.

The ECFC Men (3-3-2) came home with a 2-2 draw against Master’s FA (0-6-2) after a wild finish to their match in Scarborough.

The clubs remained deadlocked until the 53rd minute when Francis Ameyaw found the back of the net to give Master’s a 1-0 lead. ECFC struck back when Jordan Brown scored his 4th goal of the season to bring the game back to level. Ben Vyfschaft gave ECFC their first lead of the match, when he scored three minutes into extra time, a goal which looked like a game winner at the time.

ECFC’s lead was short-lived as Master’s was able to gridlock the game for good in the 94th minute when Samer Hamade scored.

ECFC Head Coach Randy Ribeiro thought his team deserved a better fate on Saturday night.

“We were so dominant throughout the entire match and deserved the 3 points. We were persistent but credit to Master’s, they defended really well in their 18-yard box all game.”

Ribeiro said the result is a good lesson for his team to learn from as they regroup for their next matchup.

“The game turned so quickly from going from such a high to feeling deflated after conceding in the final seconds of the game. It is a learning opportunity for us. We will regroup and prepare for our game against Scroscoppi on Friday evening”.

The ECFC roster featured another new face in net on Saturday night as Isaiah Cook started his first game for the club. Cook was replacing Eleias Himaras who was unable to play due to an injury sustained in training. Cook is part of the FC Durham/ECFC U21 Reserve team and has been training with the squad and dressing as the second keeper since Quillan Roberts left to represent Guyana in their CONCACAF Nations League Cup matches.

Next up for ECFC they head back on the road for their next matchup as they take on Scroscoppi FC (3-4-1) on Friday night for a 9 p.m. kickoff.

The ECFC Women were defeated 2-1 by Tecumseh SC in League1 Ontario Women’s action at Fleming College. Tecumseh SC was led to victory by Striker Kailyn Robertson, who netted a brace in Saturday night's matchup.

Tecumseh (3-2-3) opened the scoring early when Robertson found the back of the net in the 14th minute. ECFC (6-4-0) was able to tie the game up in the 40th minute when Captain Holly O’Neill finished off a scramble in the box after a corner kick, scoring her 7th goal of the season. Tecumseh rapidly restored their lead when Robertson potted her second goal of the night just before halftime in the 45th minute.

ECFC pushed for the equalizer in the second half, creating many positive chances, but were unable to find the back of the net against Tecumseh’s compact defensive formation.

Women’s Assistant Coach Ron Clarke said the story of the game was a tale of two halves, although his team could not find the equalizing goal in the final 45 minutes.

“First half I thought we struggled to build out of the back, they did a good job of pressing us. Two silly mistakes on the back hurt us. The second half, I thought we made the adjustments, we dominated possession the way we wanted to, created chances, but just fell short.”

ECFC entered the matchup with the opportunity to string together three consecutive victories for the first time this season and were unsuccessful in their attempt to achieve the feat. Midfielder Angelika Mihalopulos said the team needs to take the patient approach and trust the process will yield results.

“It is a new team, so it is not going to happen right away. Today was a better showing, it felt like we had the ball 95 per cent of the time, we just could not take that last little step and finish it.”

Just over halfway through the season, ECFC Women currently sit in 6th (and final playoff spot) in the 20 team Women’s Premier Division. This week is a very difficult set of matches for the women with them hosting 3rd place Simcoe County (7-1-2) for the first leg of the Trent Severn Cup competition on Wednesday night at Fleming College. Then on Saturday they host league leading FC London (9-1-0) for a 3pm kickoff at Fleming College.

Coach Clarke said his team will need to be focused and prepared ahead of these upcoming match ups against tough opponents.

“We have a really tough week this week, so we have a lot of work ahead of us. We are really going to need the community to come out and get behind the ladies this week.”

Tickets are available for both matches at electriccityfc.com/tickets and at the gate.

Electric City Football Club Men And Women Both Come Out On Top This Weekend

The Electric City Football Club came away with another 6-point weekend with both the Men’s and Women’s sides claiming shutout victories.

The Men’s side picked up a 1-0 victory at home over Pickering FC, while the Women came home with a 2-0 road victory over Pro Stars FC.

The Men’s side were able to bounce back after a tough result last weekend. ECFC took a 1-0 lead when Reza Nafar converted on a free kick from just outside the goal area in the 29th minute. The free kick was awarded after an ill-timed Pickering FC tackle on ECFC midfielder Daniel Oshana, resulting in a yellow card. Reza Nafar made no mistake, firing the ball into the top corner of the net.

ECFC goalkeeper Eleias Himaras was strong in net, making multiple saves to keep ECFC’s lead intact. Himaras has now started three games in the ECFC net, as he fills in for Quillan Roberts while he represents Guyana in the CONCACAF Nations League. Early on into his tenure with ECFC Himaras has stymied the competition, only allowing two goals thus far.

“What stood out to me today was the work ethic the boys put in to deserve the result they got today. They had to work hard for their three points and that’s what they did. They brought a lot of energy, controlled the tempo of the game and created opportunities to score.”

ECFC extended their home record on the season to 3-0-0, while also advancing in the League1 table with Saturdays victory. The positive result over Pickering FC was even more crucial given the fact that the two teams were only separated by two points in the standings.

“Earning maximum points is always important, but to do it against a team that you can jump ahead of in the it table is a bonus, but it is not the standings that I am worried about, it’s the process. Having our principles brought out and translated from the training ground into matches, that is the piece I am most focused on,” said Coach Ribeiro following the match.

Midfielder Tomas Alvarez was named the Mark’s Work Warehouse Hardest Working Player of the match. Alvarez helped create many offensive opportunities thanks to his ball pressure and competitive spirit throughout the match.

The Electric City FC Women (6-3-0) capped off the clubs 6-point weekend with a 2-0 victory over Pro Stars FC (0-8-0) on Saturday night. ECFC was able to convert their opportunities in a highly competitive, defensive styled affair at Victoria Park.

The game was scoreless through the first half and into the 71st minute until ECFC winger Brynn Jurus scored her 3rd goal of the season. ECFC continued to push the pace, trying to expand their 1-0 lead in the later stages of the match and were finally able to put the game away in extra time when Kayla McQueen scored. McQueen received the ball following a great cutback move from Captain Holly O’Neill and was able to finish off the play for her 8th goal of the season putting her in a tie at the top of the league scoring race. Goalkeeper Mykaela Volpe registered her 2nd consecutive clean sheet, giving her 4 clean sheets on the season.

Coach Ribeiro was proud of the way his team was able to convert on their chances against a defensive minded Pro Stars FC side.

“The game was a difficult one today. A team with a more defensive mindset, sitting in at the top of their area, very compact and looking to play on transition. We were persistent and continued to find ways to break them down.”

After picking up two victories in the span of 72 hours, ECFC has gained significant ground in the League1 Women’s table, finding themselves tied for 4th in the table with 18 points. With another goal on Saturday, Kayla McQueen has now scored in 5 of her last 6 matches, while also climbing to the top of the League1 scoring race.

Electric City FC Women Defeat Hamilton United Wednesday Night

The Electric City FC Women’s side got back in the win column on Wednesday night, defeating Hamilton United 1-0 in League 1 Ontario Women’s action at Fleming College.

ECFC (5-3-0) opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Striker Kayla McQueen found herself alone in the box and made no mistake, firing it into the bottom right corner of the net past Hamilton Goalkeeper Alexandra Mudie for her team leading seventh tally of the year, leaving her one behind the league 1 leader.

Electric City FC put pressure on Hamilton all game and had many chances to extend their lead, but couldn’t find the back of the net to put the match away. Goalkeeper Mykaela Volpe was solid when called upon in the match, including an athletic save on a golden Hamilton United scoring opportunity in the 84th minute to keep ECFC’s 1-0 lead intact.

ECFC Head Coach Randy Ribeiro says he was happy with the way his team responded following the loss to North Mississauga last Saturday.

“I think we have proven it time and time again coming back after a defeat, the girls respond very well, and we did that again today. We created a lot of chances, and we were fortunate that we played well at the back and prevented them from getting back into the game, but once again we should have been able to put them away early."

ECFC has a quick turnaround as they head out on the road to Brampton to face Pro Stars FC on Saturday night. With that in mind Coach Ribeiro said rest was a key factor on Wednesday night when he made multiple substitutions in the second half of action.

“On the Women’s side especially, the season is so condensed and for me, managing load is extremely important, the players health is always first.”

Ribeiro said that the depth of players at his disposal allows for him to make substitutions when needed.

“I trust every single player on this team to do the job that we need them to do. Having depth on this roster is a massive help and the girls that came on did a good job.”

Wednesday night's win helped move ECFC into a tie for 5th place in the League1 table, as they head into Saturday looking to add to their point total with another positive result. Goalkeeper Mykaela Volpe was named the Marks Work Warehouse hardest working player of the match.

ECFC’s next home match is an important match for the Men’s team as they look to extend their unbeaten home start to the season when they host Pickering FC on Saturday at Fleming, 3 p.m. kickoff. The next ECFC Women’s home game is on June 11 when they host Tecumseh SC, 8 p.m. kickoff. Tickets for both matches are available at electriccityfc.com or at the gate.
