The Fleming College Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management (CHCM) class of 2014/2015 will launch their exhibit, “The Maple Leaf Forever” for the Fleming College Open House on April 11th, 2015. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Canada’s Maple Leaf Flag, and the students have researched, designed and produced a temporary exhibit to celebrate this historical event. The significance and history of the flag along with the science behind textile fading and how conservators helped to preserve the original Maple Leaf Flag will be explored.
A hands-on component in the Art Conservation Laboratory, located in room C1306, will also be available as part of the College’s Open House events. Activities for all ages have been prepared by the students to showcase conservation practices, and include colour matching, viewing dyed textiles under a microscope, and a chance to design your own flag. Flag themed souvenirs will also be provided.
The exhibit is located at Fleming College’s Sutherland Campus, 599 Brealey Drive, adjacent to the Whetung Theatre and is wheelchair accessible.
