Morello’s Independent is holding a BBQ this Saturday, May 14th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All of the proceeds will help sponsor a local group of nine women, The Peterborough Derailleurs, in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, a 200 km, 2-day bike ride to raise money for cancer research at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto. Team Captain, Kate Siena, was diagnosed with advanced metastatic cancer three years ago.
Kate found out that the pain in her breast was cancer, and worse, that it had spread to her liver and that she was Stage 4, or “incurable”. But thanks to the newest treatment her tumors are gone. Her oncologist calls it “unchartered territory”. While she will continue the treatment for the rest of her life and the tumors could return at any time, advances in research and treatment have given Kate hope.
Riding her bike became Kate’s relief. And the Ride to Conquer Cancer became her way of giving hope to others. Each member of the team of close friends has to raise $2,500 to participate in the ride. “When I joined the Ride last year I was totally prepared to go it alone. But before I knew it, six friends banded together to join me and suddenly we had a team.”, Kate says. “This will be the second year for most of us, but we have a few new members as well, several of whom are cancer survivors themselves.”
When Dave Morello heard of the team’s efforts – one of the team members is a manager there – he immediately offered to help out. A generous donation of all hamburgers, hotdogs and buns means that 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the team’s bike ride. Team members will be there on their bikes and behind the counter.
“I’ve known Kate for a long time.”, says new team member Dianne Barclay. ”We all know someone who has been affected by cancer. This is my way of doing something about it.”. She adds, “Overall cancer survival rates have gone up. But 2 in 5 Canadians are expected to get cancer in their lifetime. That’s a good reason to take action.”
The barbeque will take place this Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of Morello’s Independent Grocer at 400 Lansdowne St East near Highway 7 in Peterborough.
