Ten bronze-belled ringers from The Bronze Foundation handbell choir of Toronto will be swinging out |”Memorable Music On Handbells” that the audience is quite likely to remember – a swinging event September 24th at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity United Church, 360 Reid St.
Established in 2001, this auditioned and tuneful players’ group plans to perform on five octaves of “Malmark” handbells plus three octaves of “Malmark” handchimes. Players hail from Waterloo, Brantford, Whitby, Burlington, and Newmarket. This performance marks the 15th year for the musical group.
Conductor of Trinity’s own handbell choir, Robert Grandy, reports that the more octaves they have, “the more notes they can play for a fuller sound—no need for mikes and amplifiers. These musicians all enjoy the way a big old church magically lifts it all to the sky.” The night will feature what he says are arrangements of pieces the audience is sure to know, such as Eleanor Rigby, the William Tell Overture, and Row, Row, Row, Your Boat. “I don’t want to blab and give it all away now!”
Handbell enthusiasts praise the Malmarks they hear for their unique brighter sounds than those of the more mellow -- and perhaps better known -- “Schulmerich” bells, their “Malmarkian” sound waves carrying farther and longer into the audience.
Director of The Bronze Foundation group is J.-C. Coolen, currently music director at Wexford Heights (Scarborough), and director of Durham Community choir (Oshawa), as well as the Espressivo Singers (Oshawa).
