Three Loonies on the Street

101.5 The Wolf, 100.5 Fresh Radio and CHEX-Peterborough urge you to support the Three Loonies on the Street annual fundraiser for Kawartha Food Share in conjunction with Corus Feeds Kids. On Friday December 15th from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., we’ll broadcast live from the corner of King and George, Downtown and raise money to help feed local families in need.

Over the past 16 years, the Three Loonies have raised more than $1,300,000.  This is a milestone by any standard but unfortunately poverty and hunger is growing in our city and the need has never been more urgent.  Now is the time help your neighbours in need.

What does a food bank client “look like”?  To start, 35 percent of beneficiaries are children. Close to half of which are under the age of eighteen. A growing number of food bank clients are individuals who work multiple minimum wage jobs. These people are the ever growing socio-economic group of the working poor. Close to 65 percent of individuals accessing food banks are rental tenants. When it comes to housing, one quarter of Canadians spend 30 percent or more of their monthly income on rent and utilities, leaving them susceptible to poverty, homelessness and hunger. People rely on food banks for a multitude of reasons.

Kawartha Food Share currently assists more than 8,100 men women and children every month through our 36 member agencies. This includes their four meal programs, four City food banks, six housing projects, seven county food banks, and over 20 food cupboards across the City & County of Peterborough. Last year Kawartha Food Share’s warehouse distributed over 5 million dollars worth of food and emergency care needs. Remember, each person who has accessed a food bank has their own challenges that they must face. Receiving adequate food is a right.  It is not a privilege.  And one Loonie can make a big difference!

For every Loonie donated, Kawartha Food Share can purchase up to $6 worth of food. For every Loonie donated, Kawartha Food Share is able to distribute $6 worth of food. Cash donations allow Kawartha Food Share to get the food that is needed most through many different sources including bulk purchases, food drives and other economical food programs.

You can do this one of three ways:

1. Make a donation in person at the Kawartha Food Share office at 665 Neal Drive.
