Through a haze of high tech multimedia projection, light, sound and dance, Vancouver’s hottest new multidisciplinary performance group, Hong Kong Exile, brings us their two most iconic performances to date, NINEEIGHT and Room 2048 in a riveting double bill.

NINEEIGHT is a multi-media dance theatre work with live-generated electronic sound and projection. Sourcing from Mo Lei Tau, a phenomenon of absurdist, comedic film that emerged in Hong Kong in the 1990’s, NINEEIGHT explores a climate of political uncertainty and anxiety of Hong Kong in the years awaiting its return to the hands of Mainland China on July 1, 1997.

Room 2048, the sequel to NINEEIGHT, brings us a cinematic dream machine, with the number 2048 referencing the year after the end of the China and Hong Kong’s “One country, two systems” policy. Cinematic images mix with contemporary dance, pop music, and smoke, to reveal profound diasporic experiences of loss, desire, and nostalgia. In digital light, bodies sway, shake, and run— oscillating between the gestures and dances of the mundane and the sacred, featuring excerpts from Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai’s seminal films. Both NINEEIGHT and Room 2048 both reveal a fractured world in times of political, social and geographical transition.
