Many creative people resist categorization and prefer a more borderless world, making work in more than one field, or creating stories that combine elements of several genres. Come hear five brilliant women talk about how and why they work in more than one medium, combine several mediums in one work or market themselves as genre busters.
Fiona Campbell is a writer, editor, poet, artist and activist. She writes about many things -- food, farming, feminism, the environment, mental health, family -- and is published widely. She has a MFA in creative nonfiction from the University of King's College in Halifax, where she started writing her first book, a collection of lyrical essays and poetry called Digging Deep: On Food Farming and a Life in Contradiction, and a poetry chapbook called Of the Body. Terri Favro has been a winner and a shortlisted finalist in numerous literary competitions, including the CBC Creative Non-fiction Prize. Her work has appeared in numerous anthologies including Clockwork Canada, a Canadian Steampunk story collection. In 2014, she won the Accenti Magazine Award for short fiction, awarded at Montreal’s Blue Metropolis Literary Festival. She is the author of an award-winning novella, The Proxy Bride, and the recent novel, Sputnik’s Daughter. Terri’s new novel, Once Upon a Time in West Toronto will be published by Inanna Publications in September 2017. Her stories draw on her background in the Niagara region as the youngest child of an Italian family that loved science fiction, good wine, gadgetry, comic books, hot rods, daredevils and dark humour. Born and raised in the New York City area, Carole Giangrande is a Toronto-based novelist and author of nine books, including the award-winning novella A Gardener on the Moon, the novels An Ordinary Star and A Forest Burning, the short story collection Missing Persons, the novellas Here Comes The Dreamer, and Midsummer and her new novel, All That Is Solid Melts Into Air. She's worked as a broadcast journalist for CBC Radio and her fiction, poetry, articles and reviews have appeared in Canada’s major journals and newspapers. She's recently completed another novel. Short story author Tapanga Koe has published works in Mystery Weekly, Aurora Wolf, The Link, and Eunoia Review (2012, 2017), and anthologies They Have to Take You In (edited by Ursula Pflug, Hidden Brook Press, 2014) and That Not Forgotten (edited by Bruce Kauffman, Hidden Brook Press, 2012). Tapanga lives with her family in rural Ontario, Canada and is a firm believer in the magical properties of caffeinated beverages, especially when combined with impending deadlines!
Ursula Pflug is the award-winning author of the novels Green Music; The Alphabet Stones; the YA novel, Mountain, the flash-fiction novel, Motion Sickness (illustrated by SK Dyment); and the story collections After the Fires and Harvesting the Moon. She edited the anthologies They Have To Take You In and Playground of Lost Toys (with Colleen Anderson). She has been shortlisted or nominated for the Sunburst Award, the Aurora Award, the Pushcart Prize, the 3-Day Novel Contest, the Descant Novella Award, the KM Hunter Award, and the ReLit Award among others. She lives in Norwood, Ontario.
Hilary Wear is a performing theatre artist who writes plays, monologues, and Clown turns for stage & street. Hilary Is also an expired mom, long term romantic collaborator and community volunteer. She is a Metis woman ( Saulteaux-Anishinaabe, Franco-Onondaga, Belgian, Ukrainian & Anglo-Blend) who is most happy when playing with others in a good way and so facilitates intergenerational Culture-grounded cooperative games groups that are focussed on fun. Hilary is working towards taking clowning into the prisons in Ontario and will be happy to listen if you want to talk about that.
