About the WMSL:
The Women’s Major Series Lacrosse League rebranded in 2022 and adopted a unique schedule format. Instead of traditional weekday games, the 10 teams compete during 5 ‘leagues days’. The games are played on weekends at a host location. The WMSL was designed to provide graduating U22 females a place to continue to compete at a high level. The 10 teams in the WMSL consist of highly skilled players, many of which have competed on provincial, national and/or international stages.

The WMSL is Canada’s highest level of competitive women’s box lacrosse, featuring 10 teams and more than 150 athletes. The Peterborough WMSL Lakers are among the league’s newest teams and finished 4th in their 2024 inaugural season.

The Peterborough WMSL Lakers were founded at the end of 2023 by Victoria Clark and Chelsea Campbell. Both are former PMLA players and competed several times at the National Championship with Team Ontario. Clark and Campbell both went on to play varsity field lacrosse at Trent University where they contributed to OUA Championships. Upon graduating university, they both had a strong passion to get back to the game of box lacrosse which sparked the development of the WMSL Lakers. With the support of many generous local individuals, the WMSL Lakers were able to build a team for the 2024 season and finish among the top teams. The goals of the inaugural season were far exceeded and this year the team expects to continue to add to the foundation of women’s box lacrosse.

Peterborough has a deep-rooted lacrosse culture, from minor leagues to the 18-time Mann Cup champion Peterborough Lakers,” said [WMSL Assistant Commissioner, Victoria Clark]. “We are thrilled to bring this premier event to the community, and further showcase the talent of women’s box lacrosse.”

The tournament highlights the work of Peterborough Tourism with sport tourism as a key priority, which brings significant economic benefits through facility bookings, overnight stays, and increased exposure to a new audience of athletes, supporters, and spectators.
