Ontario Speed Skating Oval In Lakefield Slated To Open For Season

After flooding the rink all week during these cold conditions, Ontario Speed Skating Oval organizers in Lakefield say in a Facebook post that the ice should be ready to go for the 2019 season starting Sunday, January 13th, when it will be open from noon until 2 p.m.

The process would have been much faster with some snow to deploy for a base but the volunteer ice crew have done a great job getting it ready and flooding the ice all week.

Organizers say rental skates will be available, and that skaters are advised to use extra caution as there are still some thin spots.

Ontario Speed Skating Oval In Lakefield Opens Sunday For 2018 Season

The Ontario Speed Skating Oval in Lakefield has the ice prepped and ready to go for Sunday (January 7th) starting at 12 noon.

Their devoted ice crews have braved the cold weather this week to build a thick layer of ice. But according to their Facebook page, "because the weather was too cold to use the Zamboni to smooth the ice, the surface is a little uneven."

The Oval is made possible by the work of volunteers and donations from those who visit. To help pay for the cost of making the ice and improving the facility, you can leave a donation when you visit.

This is a bucketlist experience, so make sure to try it!

PtboPics: Family Day At Ontario Speed Skating Oval In Lakefield

There was a great crowd out today for Family Day at the Oval in Lakefield. Peterborough MPP Jeff Leal was out with his family (see his picture below), and the ice conditions were pretty good considering the warm weather we've had of late, so kudos to the ice crew. People were able to try speed skates which were made available, and there were hot dogs and hot chocolate being served. It was fun in the sun.
