Innovation Cluster Launches the LEAPZONE @KPRDSB Entrepreneurship Program

Innovation Cluster Peterborough and the Kawarthas (ICPK) announces new partnership with Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board (KPRDSB) to foster entrepreneurial skills among secondary students through the creation of the LEAPZONE @KPRDSB Entrepreneurship Club.

As part of the KPR Pathways Initiative, the LEAPZONE @KPRDSB Entrepreneurship Program is designed to allow students to develop entrepreneurial skills and encourage innovation and creativity. The club will offer four sessions on Ideation and Creativity, Business Fundamentals, Marketing and Brand Development. The program is open to Grades 9-12 students and equips them with the skills to plan, fund, start and run a business or social enterprise.

At the end of the program, selected students from the KPRDSB will have the opportunity to represent their school board at an Ontario-Wide Showcase and Networking Event. This event brings together students from different school boards across Ontario who have participated in similar entrepreneurship programs. The event provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn from each other, share ideas and expand their networks.

"We are thrilled to bring this opportunity to students and introduce them to the exciting world of innovation and entrepreneurship! This learning experience will help students build foundational knowledge and skills and empower them to leap out of their comfort zone and turn their ideas into something great," said principal of Teaching and Learning K-12: Secondary Focus Charlotte Filip.

The Cluster recognizes entrepreneurship's pivotal role in driving economic growth and development, creating job opportunities and promoting social and environmental sustainability. As such, the organization provides a broad range of programs and services tailored to support entrepreneurs at all stages of their journey, including high school, college and university students looking to advance their entrepreneurial endeavours.

These students will discover the resources available to them to start businesses in our region, and our sessions will help them build the entrepreneurial skills they need for success in the years to come. Lakefield High School Covers Hit Broadway Song on Its Anniversary

Broadway may have some new rising stars in the future after this performance.

Students of the Lakefield College School (LCS) Musical Theater have recorded their own version of the hit song, “Seasons of Love” from the Broadway musical, “Rent” by Johnathan Larsen.

The performance pays tribute to the song that celebrates its 25th anniversary this year since it debuted in 1996.

“The Lakefield College School Musical Theatre students chose to perform this song since, during this past year, we have all had to savour the little moments and make the most of them,” said Geoff Bemrose, LCS teacher. “As a Peterborough community, we have come together stronger than ever and this is a great reminder to make every second count.”

The video was shot and edited by local filmmaker Tyler Boyco and the music was produced by local artist Beau Dixon. Bemrose directed the video saying it took several hours to produce.

LCS uploaded the video on Wednesday and it has almost 600 views on YouTube.

One (Or More) of Peterborough's High Schools May Close

Imagine your high school that you are attending, or attended, closing. Well that's now become a distinct possibility for four Peterborough schools—Adam Scott, Kenner, TASSS and PCVS—as Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board will review the possible closure of at least one of these schools due to plummeting enrollment at the schools. This is sure to be a controversial process, and the school board is welcoming input from the community at a series of community meetings starting in February.

Peterborough High Schools Can Enter Contest To Have Down With Webster Play Your Prom

High school students in the Patch have the chance to compete in a provincewide contest to have Down With Webster perform at their spring prom. The band will perform a concert in June for the Ontario high school that wins the new online contest College Sounds Great.

The contest encourages students to describe why college education is an excellent postsecondary option, and the Top 10 high schools with the largest share of entries will be finalists for the winning concert. "This is an exciting way to get high school students in our community thinking about postsecondary education," says Fleming College President Tony Tilly.

Students can enter the contest by submitting a photo and a 50 to 250 word paragraph, or by making a video, explaining why “college sounds great" to them.
