PTBOCanada Featured Post: Habitat for Humanity Finish a Home Fundraiser

Help Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region finish construction and reach their goal of $50,000 as part of the Finish a Home fundraiser; the second phase of affordable condo units in the City of Peterborough.

Finish a Home is a fundraiser that allows donors to help pay for the finishes in a Habitat for Humanity PKR home. Members of the community can sponsor construction materials and finishes of a Habitat for Humanity PKR home from a shopping list of items including doors, sinks, light fixtures, appliances and more. Supporters can select the item they wish to sponsor and donate the equivalent cost as a cash donation.

100 per cent of the funds raised from this campaign will be allocated towards the Phase 2 affordable condo development.

There are 12 condos as part of Phase 2 of Habitat for Humanity PKR’s fundraiser to help local families build strength, stability and self-reliance through affordable homeownership.

Habitat for Humanity PKR builds and rehabilitates decent and affordable homes, from single-family houses to multi-unit developments. The model of affordable homeownership bridges a gap for low-income, working families and individuals by providing them with the opportunity to purchase their own homes with an affordable geared-to-income mortgage. Since 2002, 82 local families have been given a hand-up into affordable homeownership in the Peterborough & Kawartha Region.

“With climbing interest rates and inflation on the rise, we appreciate any support from our community to help give families a hand-up through affordable homeownership. When our cost to build is lower, we are able to help more families across the financial spectrum,” said Susan Zambonin, Habitat for Humanity PKR CEO.

The Phase 2 development consists of 11, 2-bedroom and 1, one-bedroom affordable condo units and is currently under construction. Two of the 12 local families have already been accepted for homeownership and are working at completing their 500 volunteer hours as part of their partnership agreement. The Phase 2 development is located next to the Phase 1 development which was completed in April 2022 and is now home to 41 homeowner families.

“A year living in the Habitat home has opened so many doors for me. It has brought me peace and I am able to grow and learn,” says phase one homeowner Kerry-Ann. “I spent 34 years of moving place to place. There was always a sense of insecurity and unsafeness and never knowing how long I would be living in one place. I never knew what it was like to be safe and secure. I finally get the opportunity to live in a safe and secure place and work towards important goals. It really means more than I could ever express in words. It is like a dream come true. It has been the best year of my life!"

Habitat for Humanity PKR held a Build Kick-Off event for the project on May 23 and was joined by representatives from Habitat for Humanity Canada, City of Peterborough Mayor Jeff Leal, local elected officials, and members of the community. The Phase 2 development is expected to be completed in the summer of 2024.

Those interested in donating can do so online, by phone or via mail (300 Milroy Dr.) to Habitat for Humanity PKR.

Applications are still open to select 10 additional homeowners who need a hand-up into safe, decent, and affordable housing.
