Minor Hockey Volunteer James Alex Brunton Faces 62 Charges In Child Pornography/Sexual Assault Investigation

The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service will be continuing to work in this joint investigation with the Toronto Police Service.
 
Police will be continuing to search this residence for days to come.  James Alex Brunton, 65, was transported to Toronto and all charges will be dealt with there.  Toronto Police Service is overseeing the investigation.
 
This investigation to date goes back to 2003. As stated in Toronto's Media Release, Brunton was an active volunteer in the Peterborough community and held many trustworthy positions within local organizations.  
 
Many victims have been identified to date and police are in the process of contacting those victims.  Police have rosters and staff information for organizations that Brunton has been associated with over the years and will be contacting those who can assist with this investigation in the days and weeks to come.  Police also have concerns that there may be persons who know they have been victimized by Brunton and are encouraging those victims to come forward for support.

From a Toronto Police service news release...

On November 9, 2012, 51 Division received information from another police agency and an investigation began.

As a result, the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police were contacted and assisted with the investigation.

On Monday, May 13, 2013, at approximately 6:30 a.m., the Toronto Police Service, with the assistance of the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police, executed a Search Warrant at a home in Peterborough.

James Alex Brunton, 65, of Peterborough, was arrested. He is charged with:
1. Possession of Child Pornography 2. Accessing Child Pornography 3. Exposing Genitals to a Person Under 16 years 4. Making Sexually Explicit Material Available to a Child 5. Importing/Exporting Child Pornography 6. Invitation to Sexual Touching 7. Sexual Exploitation 8. Distribution of Child Pornography 9. Possession For the Purpose Making Available Child Pornography

These charges stem from Brunton's alleged contact with a man, now 18, in the United States over a number of years.

He is also charged with:
1. Sexual Assault 2. Forcible Confinement 3. Evading/Deceptive Statement (Customs Act) 4. Extortion

These charges stem from Brunton's alleged contact with a 29−year−old man in the United States.

The investigation has revealed that James Alex Brunton is very active in the Peterborough hockey community.
He is involved with:
− Peterborough Minor Petes AAA Hockey: Secretary − Peterborough Minor Petes AAA Major Midget: Team Manager − Lakefield Chiefs Jr. Hockey: Volunteer/Assistant Manager − Kawartha Komets Special Needs Hockey: Volunteer − Peterborough Junior C Lakers: Manager/Volunteer

He has also volunteered at the Telecare Distress Centres of Canada. Brunton is further charged with:
1. 25 counts of Voyeurism 2. 12 counts of Make Child Pornography 3. 12 counts of Possession of Child Pornography
These charges stem from his alleged involvement in covertly making videos in hockey team locker rooms, primarily in the Peterborough area.
He is scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, 10 a.m., room 101.
The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police will be continuing to work in this joint investigation with the Toronto Police Service.
This investigation is ongoing and investigators believe there may be more victims as this investigation dates back to 2003.
