Peterborough's Sarah Porter Scores Three Touchdowns in Team Ontario’s Gold Medal Win at National Championship in Saskatchewan

Peterborough’s Sarah Porter helped Team Ontario capture gold at the 2026 U18 Women’s Tackle National Championship, scoring three touchdowns in the championship game to help secure the title.

The former Peterborough Wolverine and current Peterborough Pagans Rugby U18 Girls player represented Ontario at the national tournament, held July 20-28 in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Porter, who plays running back, was one of 25 athletes selected to the 2026 Team Ontario U18 Women’s Tackle Program following a competitive selection process that saw more than 90 players from across the province attend the team’s high-performance development camp.

Team Ontario opened the tournament with wins over Quebec and Saskatchewan before continuing its strong run through the championship rounds. Porter scored two touchdowns in Ontario’s 64-0 win over Manitoba before helping lead the team to a gold medal with a 68-8 victory over Quebec in the final, where she scored three touchdowns.

Porter’s recent football accomplishments also include being named the Senior Most Valuable Defensive Player for the Peterborough Kinsmen Minor Football League’s Roughriders in 2022.

The gold medal adds another achievement to a growing list of accomplishments for Porter, who continues to represent Peterborough on the provincial and national football stage.

Peterborough U14 AA Wolverines Capture Dan Grossi Memorial Cup in London

The Peterborough U14 AA Wolverines are Ontario Summer Football League champions after defeating the London Jr Mustangs 35-14 in the Dan Grossi Memorial Cup on Friday at Western Alumni Stadium in London.

The Wolverines capped off their season with an impressive championship victory over the Jr Mustangs, bringing home the Dan Grossi Memorial Cup after a 35-14 win in the Ontario Summer Football League (OSFL) final.

Peterborough entered the playoffs after finishing the regular season with a 6-4 record, placing fourth in the OSFL East Division. London also finished fourth in its division, posting a 5-5 record in the West before advancing to the championship game.

The title game was played at Western Alumni Stadium, where the Wolverines finished their season on top with a convincing win.

The championship is named in memory of Dan Grossi, the late president of the Toronto Jr. Argonauts, who was widely recognized for his dedication to youth football and his commitment to supporting young athletes and their families throughout the football community.

The victory caps off a memorable season for the Wolverines, who turned a 6-4 regular season into an OSFL championship and will bring the Dan Grossi Memorial Cup back to Peterborough.

Beloved Peterborough Coach Passes Away Suddenly At Age 64

The Peterborough sports community has mourned the loss of coach John Welsh, who passed away suddenly at age 64 on Tuesday.

Welsh was active in the sports world for several decades. He coached in the Kinsmen Minor Football League (KMFL) for 45 years, was the founding president of the Peterborough Hockey Association for 25 years and coached the St. Peter’s Secondary School Saints Senior football team.

The KMFL released this statement regarding Welsh’s passing:

“John had a heart of gold. He cared deeply, and he showed it in the way he treated everyone—especially his players, who he loved like family. Whether it was a word of encouragement, a quiet check-in, or simply being there when someone needed support, John was someone you could always count on. And if you ever watched John on the sidelines, you saw the joy in his face watching his players play. There was pride in every moment, in every rep, in every success they achieved. Their growth and happiness meant everything to him.”

Brian Junkin of the Peterborough Wolverines, who worked with Welsh, also released a statement on behalf of the organization:

“Football is Family. Unfortunately, we lost a prominent member of our family last night. It saddens me to inform you that longtime Wolverines and KMFL Coach John Welsh has passed away. John devoted over 45 years of his life to coaching youth in multiple sports, but especially football. This is a generational loss to the Peterborough Football Community. Some of our coaching staff were actually coached by John as children and have now had their own kids coached by John. He spent thousands of hours coaching thousands of kids in high school, house league and rep ball.

On a personal note, it was John Welsh that gave me my first opportunity to coach football some 23 years ago and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to coach under him for 16 years in the KMFL. He will be greatly missed.”

Welsh leaves behind his wife Vicki; his children Sarah and Jonathon and his grandchildren Lila-Jane, William and Margaret. He is a brother to Jim and Bill; brother-in-law to Nancy and an uncle to several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Highland Park Funeral Centre on May 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by the funeral service to start immediately after. Words of remembrance will be shared at 1 p.m., followed by a reception.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the KMFL John Welsh Financial Grant, which can be made by emailing fundraising@kmfl.ca.

U10 Peterborough Wolverines Crowned Provincial Champions

The U10 Peterborough Wolverines of the Ontario Summer Football League are provincial champions, winning the Sandy Ruckstuhl Memorial Cup after defeating the Mississauga Huskies U10, 25-14, at the Western Alumni Stadium in London on Sunday afternoon.

The game was a rubber match after both teams gave each other their only loss in the regular season, playing twice prior to the championship. Peterborough’s home opener resulted in a 40-24 win on May 27. The Huskies got revenge with a 36-22 win on June 17.

Peterborough went a perfect 3-0 in the playoffs after going 5-1 in the regular season. Their opening postseason game against the Guelph Jr. Gryphons U10 yielded their second shutout of the season in a 40-0 win on July 15. They followed up their perfect performance by beating the York Lions in a 75-20 rout to make the championship game.

The U10 Peterborough Wolverines of the Ontario Summer Football League have punched their ticket to a provincial championship game after routing the York Lions 70-25 at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School on Saturday.

The win gives the Wolverines a date with the Mississauga Huskies U10 in the finals of the Sandy Ruckstuhl Memorial Cup (the name of the AA U10 playoffs). The finals take place at the Western Alumni Stadium in London this Sunday.
