The excavator went to work Monday morning, August 10th, and demolition was underway at the long-standing eyesore in Peterborough’s west end.

The house has stood vacant and badly damaged since a major fire in September 2022. What followed was a lengthy process involving investigations, legal requirements, ownership verification, utility disconnections and other steps that had to be completed before the City could move ahead with the demolition.

This morning, that wait finally appeared to be over.

The home is expected to be completely torn down today. The cleanup of the property and surrounding area will take longer, but the structure that has stood on Woodglade for nearly four years will be gone.

And the reaction from the neighbourhood was hard to miss.

As people walked past and residents drove by, several expressed the same sentiment: “It’s about time.”

For the people who have lived around the property and had to look at the burned-out home for years, the demolition marks the end of a very long wait.
