10-Year Old-Boy Catches "Walter" One Year After Stepfather Snags Fish At OFAH Fishing Derby
/Like father, like son, as 10-year-old Ben Bumstead has caught the top prize ‘Walter,’ at the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) Under the Lock Fishing Derby one year after his stepfather Justin Desbarbieux did it on a gloomy Saturday morning at the Peterborough Lift Lock.

Bumstead caught Walter, the prized rainbow trout that weighs roughly eight to 10 lbs. at a length of 20-24 inches. He caught it after his third cast less than 30 minutes into the event. He snagged Walter with worm bait near the train turn bridge just beside the barrier netting. Bumstead was overjoyed when he found out it was Walter.
“I felt like I could do a backflip,” he exclaimed.
“ I couldn't wait for him to run up to the stage and tell everyone how he just caught Walter,” said Desbarbieux.
The father-son duo was present at Wednesday’s fish release where all the rainbow trout were put into the canal in preparation for the event.
Bumstead gave himself an ‘extra advantage’ prior to Walter being tossed into the water.
“I touched his tail for good luck and I said to the guy, ‘I'm catching Walter this year,’” explained Bumstead.

The two have bonded well over the years as Desbarbieux came into Bumstead’s life at an early age. The two often go hunting and fishing together and call each other father and son. Desbarbieux says he had a ‘proud father’ moment, seeing Bumstead catch Walter.
“You got to love it, especially so early in the derby like that,” he said. “It’s a very proud moment for the kids for sure, you got to love it.”
The Norwood District Public School student is walking away with the grand prize of $1,000 cash and gets to keep Walter. Bumstead said he was splitting some of the money with his early childhood friend but has no plans with the remainder of the cash as of yet.
The derby began Saturday with the youth event — for children 15 and under — at 9 a.m. and the all-ages kicking off Sunday at 9 a.m. and runs until May 7. It includes 25 tagged fish, each with a $200 cash prize sponsored by local businesses.

OFAH Fishing Derby
The 34th annual OFAH Fishing Derby is back at the Lift Lock!
The youth derby begins on Saturday, for children 15 and under and includes 500 tagged Trout for instant prizes and a chance to win one of four grand prizes. The big fish prize - $1,000 cash - will go to whoever catches Walter, a rainbow trout estimated to weigh between 8 and 10 pounds.
The all-ages derby, meanwhile, runs from April 29 to May 7 and for the second year. It will include tagged fish with cash prizes sponsored by local businesses.

Chloe is a Peterborough Sports Hall of Fame Inductee who has turned her other passion, for animal welfare, into a commitment that few will sign up for. She went to Ukraine shortly after the war began to help build shelter in neighboring Romania for dogs and family pets evacuated from the war zone and soon after returned twice to deliver humanitarian aid to both animal shelters, civilians and front line defenders. She will share stories of her time with different groups helping and the day to day lives of ordinary people suffering this criminal invasion. There will be a question and answer. All profits from the show will support Chloe Black's expenses for pet evacuations and Ukraine Patriot (the group she volunteers with).

Tom Green Live at The Venue
Canadian-American comedian, show host, actor, filmmaker, podcaster and rapper. After pursuing stand-up comedy and music as a young adult, Green created and hosted The Tom Green Show, which aired on Canadian television and later on MTV between 1994 and 2000. The Arrogant Worms at Market Hall
The year was 1991. Presumably, some significant world events occurred. The world truly changed in the fall however, when something truly magnificent happened in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. A beacon of hope was lit and has shone brightly ever since – The Arrogant Worms. The Arrogant Worms began as a comedy troupe performing songs and sketches on campus radio. The early feedback on the live shows was clear: lose the sketches. So the songs endured and they all remain because the band hates to throw anything out.
The songs were written to make fun of a big dumb world. Luckily, the world is still dumb and The Arrogant Worms (Mike McCormick, Chris Patterson and Trevor Strong) still have plenty to sing about. The shows are fast, furious and family friendly. The wit is quick, the satire is biting and the musicianship is second to none. Their appeal has earned them fans from kids to parents to grandparents to Princess Leia.
In recent years the Worms have been pleased to donate their time and talent to the cause of literacy in Canada through Frontier College and were twice awarded the Peter Gzowski Award for their efforts.
So nearly a quarter century after they began, The Arrogant Worms continue to provide tuneful and silly escapism for everyone who needs it. And if you think you don’t need it, well you’re wrong. You do. The Arrogant Worms know what’s best for you and what’s best for you is The Arrogant Worms.

Lang Pioneer Village Hosting Zero-Waste Feast on the Farm Event For May 28 and 29
/Lang Pioneer Village is selected to host the Feast On the Farm event, a two-day zero-waste fundraiser event for May 28 and 29 announced on Tuesday.

The event is a series that includes a gastronomic food-loving experience on the 28th followed by a full day of interactive sessions for industry professionals only on the second day.
The Culinary Tourism Alliance is hosting the event in partnership with Peterborough & the Kawarthas Tourism.
The consumer day event on May 28 brings together Chef Brad Watt of Publican House Brewery and Pub, Chef Tyler Scott from Rare Escape, and Chef Lisa Dixon, owner of Black Honey Cafe. Their curated dishes will be paired with local spirits by Persian Empire, craft beer by Bobcaygeon Brewing Company and Sustainable Winegrowing Ontario Certified wines.
“We’re excited to host such an inspired event,” says Joe Rees, director of tourism at Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development (PKED). “Feast On the Farm is a great opportunity for visitors to savour a menu that reflects the rich agricultural history of our region in a way that is genuinely in line with our sustainable tourism development goals.”
Every consumer day ticket supports recovery in the culinary tourism industry and includes a subsidy for industry professionals to attend the Feast On the Farm Industry Day the following day.
“Our Feast On program acts as the conduit to connect industry professionals with others in our network who are truly creating change in Ontario's food and drink space,” said Billy Alexander, director of programs for the Culinary Tourism Alliance. “Industry day is about knowledge sharing, supporting each other, and working together toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.”

Jackson Delta - True Blue at Market Hall
Peterborough’s own critically acclaimed blues trio, Jackson Delta returns to the Market Hall for what has been an interrupted annual reunion. It’s been a tough couple of years for musicians although Jackson Delta were lucky to have performed a handful of outdoor shows this past two summers.
The trio have performed all over North America from Memphis to Inuvik from Vancouver to Halifax. They have played countless Folk, Jazz and Blues Festivals plus radio and television and they still enjoy a dedicated fan base from across the years.
These days all members are involved in their own personal projects but always enjoy getting together and making their style of Blues that is upbeat and positive. They’ll be playing their ‘hits’ plus a sprinkling of newer tunes. As always, I’m sure there will be the usual stage banter that inevitably gets some laughs at a band members expense.

The Peterborough Home & Cottage Show
The Peterborough Home & Cottage Show is the PREMIER Marketing Showplace. The Peterborough Home & Cottage Show has been in existence for 42 years and was originally known as the Kawartha Home & Sportsman Show. It started at the Kinsman Centre and the show moved to the Healthy Planet Arena after it was built, and has consistently attracted thousands of visitors each year.
Peterborough’s original – and STILL the largest – true Home Show is located east of Toronto and west of Ottawa, featuring over 160+ Home Show Exhibitors!

2023 CANCAST Fishing and Tackle Show
The Peterborough Tackle Swap and Fishing Show returns to Peterborough, Ontario under its new banner name and parent company, CANCAST Fishing. The 2023 CANCAST Fishing and Tackle Show will mark the official 2nd running of the Peterborough event and will more than double in size for 2023!
The CANCAST Fishing and Tackle show will once again be a hybrid event featuring a new expo Industry EXPO side showcasing the latest products to hit the market from top industry manufacturers, top bait makers and some of Canada’s biggest retailers. Also included in the event is the largest used fishing and tackle swap meet in Eastern Ontario. To top it off, on site we will also feature some of the Top Fishing Guides, Fishing Charter Captains, Tournament Series Directors, and top Industry Prostaff. More details to be released soon. With a career that spans over 20 years, his musical resume includes 9 studio albums, countless awards, and sold out shows across Canada, US, UK, and Europe.
As the sole songwriter and arranger for a group of 9 musicians, André has created his own musical brand infused with soul, roots, blues, and R&B. Using an eclectic combination of instruments, he creates a musical story that becomes the soundtrack for his lyrics.
Since first taking to the stage at age 15, André’s love and dedication have always been to the live show. Combining his powerhouse vocals with a group of world-class musicians, André makes it a priority to always give the audience an exciting, intense, and memorable musical experience. The connection between the musicians, the song, and the audience is always the ultimate goal.
Throughout the years, André’s style and philosophy toward music has attracted attention in the music community. Since his first album release in 2009, Andre has gained notoriety with awards such as “Male Vocalist of the Year” - Hamilton Blues Awards, “Song of the Year” - Blues and Roots Radio and a four-time nominee at the Hamilton Arts Awards. André was also selected by the Grand River Blues Society to compete at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee.
