Undermanned Electric City Football Club Men's Team Lose 2-1 In Inaugural Trent Severn Cup; First Home Defeat

The undermanned Electric City Football Club (ECFC) coughed up two goals in the last ten minutes for a 2-1 loss against the Simcoe County Rovers in the inaugural Trent Severn Cup on Saturday.

The match would be decided by penalty kicks if it was a draw after regulation. Photo by David Tuan Bui.

ECFC head coach Randy Riberio was suspended for two games for accumulative yellow cards. Striker and team-leading scorer Jordan Brown was suspended for three games for a ‘league incident’ according to Riberio.

"Jordan's a leader on the field for us,” said Ribierio. “He's our leading goal-scorer and so we definitely missed his presence today but we have full trust in all the players we have on the squad to the jobs we needed to do and I thought overall today, we were the better team but unfortunately we fell asleep for the last ten minutes."

The cup was created in mid-June to help spark both clubs in their first year with League1 Ontario.

“Both franchises have shown a great desire to compete at the highest standards and strive to participate at the highest level in the Canadian Soccer landscape,” said John Copp, HDSA president. “The Districts want to help kick off these franchises' inaugural season and provide the groundwork for what we expect will be a long (friendly) rivalry between two top League 1 Ontario Clubs.”

The cup winner is determined by the combined score of both men’s and women’s teams. The women drew to a 1-1 on June 15.

Electric City got on the board first with a goal from Mohammad Reza Nafar in the eighth minute off a soft corner kick pass. Reza Nafar juked through two Rovers and had his shot sail by several defenders and the keeper on the left-side bottom corner.

Simcoe keeper Richard Gomes protested the corner-kick call to no avail as he made a save on a ball going wide of the net. The official claimed the ball went out of bounds and was last touched by a Rover for the corner kick.

“I didn't expect the ball to come to me,” said Reza Nafar. “I was kind of in shock when I saw the ball and it was just instinctive what I did and I saw an opportunity to shoot and I did.”

Simcoe had an uncontested shot in the box after forcing an ECFC turnover in the 32nd minute. Electric City keeper Quillan Roberts made a diving save to keep it 1-0 into the half.

Simcoe got a free kick in the 58th minute but had their shot sail wide of the net as the first quality scoring chance of the second half.

ECFC had their own free kick in the 65th minute but Reza Nefar had his shot go high and wide as the team’s first quality chance of the half.

The lone goal-scorer tried to make amends forcing a turnover shortly after the missed free kick. He forced a turnover and made a centring pass to freshly substituted Benjamin Vyfshaft but just went out of reach for a one-timer goal.

Simcoe stormed back late in the 86th minute with a goal from Jacob Grant to tie it 1-1. He zipped it past a diving Roberts from a cross pass in front of the net.

Vyfshaft received a centring pass during extra time but could not beat a diving Gomes and kept the game tied.

Justin Yarde clinched it for Simcoe County as he beat Roberts over the to after a midfield turnover by ECFC.

This was the second consecutive men’s home game where they allowed a goal in extra time in the second half to lose their lead.

“Lack of concentration in the last ten minutes,” said Rob Clarke, ECFC interim head coach. "Two mistakes cost us goals and we can't let that happen against a good Simcoe team. We'll remember this one. Hopefully, we can learn from this moving forward."

The men’s next game is against Darby FC on Friday as their second-last road game of the season.

Sunday’s women’s game against Vaughan Azzurri was postponed due to weather conditions 23 minutes into their match. Their final regular-season game will be concluded at a later date.

The Capital PTBO To Hold Inaugural Charity Home Run Derby For Local Sports Initiatives

Sports apparel store The Capital PTBO has announced its inaugural Home Run Derby to be held on Oct. 1 at the Kinsmen Arena ball diamond in support of local sports organizations.

Mark Million (pictured) opened The Capital PTBO in late January this year with his brother Justin. Photo by Luke Best.

The store is accepting registrations through social media private messages or by email at captain@thecapitalptbo.ca. The derby registration fee is $25 and requires participants to bring their own pitcher to throw the ball, slo-pitch style.

The all-ages event is capped at 40 batters each getting 10 pitches where the most home runs hit is declared the winner.

"This is an idea brought to us by Pete Dalliday which was an interaction brought to him by Colin Teskey and Jordan Mercier of Extra 90.5 Radio,” said Mark Million, Capital PTBO co-owner.

Prize structure, food vendors and charity proceed recipients will be announced at a later date. Million has confirmed monetary prizing and custom-made trophies for the winners. They also get their name on the store’s “Wall of Honour,” a banner hung from the store’s roof.

The event could be separated into age divisions however it is not confirmed what they are yet.

Million had remarked that he opened his store as a sports hub for Peterborough and was community-oriented in a prior interview with PTBOCanada. He is seeking volunteers for the event as is confident they will help make it a success.

“We need a lot of help,” he explained. “One thing we have known in the last six months is that when we have put a call to action out, whether to build our lending library or people with their own sports mantles that they want to put on display, we've had people to volunteer to help us out. That's the Peterborough way.”

This event is only the beginning of a series of events Million’s store wants to do for the local community.

“The Home Run Derby is the tip of the iceberg,” he explained. “We'd love to run a street hockey tournament, we'd love to do a three-point contest; all these sorts of things where we can integrate in public spaces and not-for-profit, that's the key. Everything goes back into supporting youth sports and youth initiatives.”

Kawartha Downs Continues Revving Its 50th Anniversary With Tractor Pull and Demolition Derby

The festivities continue for Kawartha Downs’s 50th anniversary with a tractor pull and demolition during the Aug. 5/6 weekend.

The tractor pull is held on Aug. 5 that boasts a new asphalt track, new bleachers — with a seating capacity of around 2,500 people — and pullers hailing from all over the province and Quebec.

"We've got the best clay track in Ontario," said Dan Fair, Executioner Sled Team operator, "This track is every bit as anything that they run.”

The garden tractor pull starts at 4 p.m. and the truck and tractor pull at 7 p.m. Several antique tractors will be on display throughout the day.

Other attractions include a lamb and rabbit show, live music from a cover band to be announced, vendors and food trucks from Sammy’s Roadhouse & Grill from Cavan-Monaghan. Spectators can access the pit area and get autographs signed from the drivers.

Aug. 6 features a demolition derby on an asphalt track instead of a traditional mud track. The former allows for a faster-paced derby according to Jim Grant of Ontario Demolition Derby Limited.

“The cars cannot get stuck,” he said. “The cars can tear out a rear axle and still keep on going. They do not get bogged down in the mud, they slip and slide around, they can have four flat tires and keep going so they're always in the action until the car dies.”

Grant believes that Kawartha Downs is the perfect venue to host the event considering the success of past demolition derbies in Peterborough.

"Peterborough used to do 4,000 people for theirs,” said Grant. "We would fill the grandstands at Lakefield and Port Hope had a crazy amount of people. People love demo derby so to come and see it on pavement is awesome.”

There is a total of $10,000 in prize money for the demolition drivers for each respective derby. Categories include figure-8, mini, midsize, junk run, full-sized cards and full-sized trucks.

Small Town Boys Putting Havelock On The Map As Softball Team Selected To Represent Ontario At Eastern Canadian Championships In Nova Scotia

The Havelock Express U15 Rep Softball team has been selected by the Ontario Amateur Softball Association (OASA) to represent Ontario at the Eastern Canadian Championships being held in Brookfield, Nova Scotia.

Cheryl and Bryce Levesque started the Havelock Minor Softball Program eight years ago in hopes to help youth develop their skills while allowing them to play locally.

The U15 Rep team plays in the Kawartha Softball League, though they play exhibition games with stronger teams in the OASA from neighboring communities.

Last weekend the team competed in the OASA Eliminations in Grafton, a tournament that seeds teams into their brackets for provincials.

Havelock Express was ranked number one in the B bracket.

On Sunday, Bryce, who helps coach the team, received an unexpected phone call inviting the team to represent Ontario at the Eastern Canadian Championships in Nova Scotia.

“OASA called my husband and told him the news,” said Cheryl. “We didn’t have a game until Tuesday so that’s when we told the parents and kids. They were shocked.”

Cheryl says the majority of the team has been playing ball together since the program started.

“They’ve grown up playing ball together.”

The team was given until Wednesday at noon to accept the invitation and now have about one month to raise the funds to get the boys to Nova Scotia.

They hope to raise $10,000 - $12,000, which will be split evenly amongst players families to cover some of the cost of travel and accommodations.

Cheryl says as of Friday she already has $600 in donations in her hand, with plenty of local business owners having pledged to sponsor the team as well.

“Our community is absolutely unbelievable,” she said. “Even before this happened local businesses have always been so eager to help. We got new jerseys this year and were hoping to have a couple teams sponsored, they stepped right up and sponsored all six teams. We were able to get some new equipment, some bats, it’s really amazing.”

As a team made up of local boys in a town of just under 5000 people, Cheryl says this opportunity is a huge deal.

“We are a small little town known for our jamboree and a train station. This is so overwhelming we’re still trying to process it,” she said. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for this team and a chance to not only represent Ontario but also our town.”

The four day tournament will run from Aug. 18 - 21. In the past OASA has sent 2-3 teams to represent Ontario against teams from Nova Scotia, PEI, Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Quebec.

“We hope to go down there and be competitive. If we do well that’s a bonus.”

Those wishing to make a donation can E-Transfer Erin King, Havelock Minor Softball Program Fundraiser Coordinator at erin_king@kprdsb.ca. Tax receipts can be issued if mentioned in a note.

Businesses that would like to donate or sponsor the team should reach out to Cheryl Levesque at 705-750-5205 or at m_r_jewel@hotmail.com.
