Electric City Football Club Allow Extra Time Comeback for 2-2 Draw

It was rough times for Electric City Football Club (ECFC) as they coughed up a third consecutive home lead in extra time, tying Alliance United FC to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday evening.

Electric City’s prior two home matches with conceded extra-time goals started with a 3-3 draw against Burlington SC, allowing three unanswered goals in the second half including two penalty kicks (with the second in extra time) on July 13.

They lost in extra time to the Simcoe County Rovers FC allowing two goals in the 86th minute and extra time for a 2-1 loss on July 23rd.

“It's frustrating conceding goals late over the past few matches,” said Randy Riberio, ECFC head coach. We can't afford to do it, we have to be locked in, switched on for everything that gets thrown at us. We know their team is down and they need to score a goal so they're going to throw whatever they have and we need to be better at dealing with it.

Both teams exchanged scoring chances early in the first half. ECFC goalkeeper Quillan Roberts intercepted multiple balls launched high in the air from free and corner kicks to keep the game scoreless.

ECFC struck first as midfielder Mohammad Reza-Nafar scored his fourth of the season. He shot from outside the box, beating Alliance keeper Praveen Ahilan in the lower left corner for the 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.

Tomas Alverez tapped in a one-timed pass from Ethan Gopaul to make it 2-0 in the 37th minute to extend ECFC’s lead into the half. That was Alverez’s second goal of the season, scoring last against the ProStars FC on May 21.

Alliance got on the board in the 73rd minute as Atchu Sivananthan knocked in a header off a sideline pass, beating a diving Roberts making it 2-1.

ECFC’s Adrian Gallo turned over the ball and Alliance’s Kingsley Belele almost capitalized on the mistake with a high-quality scoring chance. Roberts was able to make a diving save on the low corner to maintain the 2-1 lead.

Alliance’s Samuel Gardner earned a red card in the 84th minute making the team’s comeback bid more difficult.

Gopaul almost clinched the game for ECFC going for the top corner but just went outside the post.

Roberts mishandled the ball off an errant play from Alliance and fielded out of bounds for a corner kick. He chose to play the ball instead of allowing it to roll out of bounds for a corner kick. Riberio was unsure if Roberts had the option allow the ball to roll out or not.

Alliance capitalized on their final opportunity as Nirun Sivananthan was able to kick it past Roberts from a contested header to tie the game moments before extra time expired.

“I thought we were the better team, we never looked like we were conceding a goal until the final 10 minutes of the match which was unfortunate,” explained Riberio. “We need to create opportunities to put the game away and if we would have had the next goal to make it 3-0, I think that game's out of reach.”

Playoff clinching scenario for ECFC (to earn the sixth seed):

  • ECFC must win all three remaining games and;

  • Alliance United FC and Guelph United lose all their remaining games and;

  • Hamilton United cannot win all their remaining games

This was Riberio’s first game back off a two-game suspension for multiple yellow cards. ECFC striker Jordan Brown is eligible for the team’s next game finishing a three-game suspension from an off-field incident. The team sits in ninth place with an 8-6-4 record with 28 points.

Local TV Producer Finishes First Place in Kingston Duathlon

YourTV Peterborough made news of its own as producer Dan Malta finished first place in the Kingston Triathlon’s Duathlon, travelling over 40 km on Sunday.

Malta competed in the short course duathlon that consisted of running 4.2 km, biking 30 km then running another 7.2 km. He finished each leg in 17:45, 55:32 and 31:23 respectively and finished the race in 1:46:59.

“I ended up winning with a five-minute pad so I guess I was lucky to be the fastest person there on that day,” said Malta. “It felt great though. My mom Kathy and my fiancée Katrina were there at the finish line, it was nice to have them there cheering me on.”

Kingston Triathlon also featured the short and long-course triathlon that included swimming events. Photo courtesy of Dan Malta.

Despite not getting much running experience since elementary school, Malta took a long and progressive path to train for long-distance races.

He said he started mountain biking from his north-end home to Trent University and went from there.

“In March, the pandemic hit, I had just bought my first road bike off Kijiji for $200 I had no idea what that purchase would spark as bikes and cycling are now an obsession of mine,” explained Malta. “I had a lot more time on my hands due to the cancellation of the OHL season and Katrina (Malta’s finacée) mentioned to me she likes to go for runs.”

Malta recently competed in the Ironman 70.3 in Muskoka, finishing with a time of 5:40:23 on July 9.

“When I signed up, I knew I could complete the 21 km run distance as I complete them pretty regularly and I knew I could complete the 90km bike as I do those regularly,” said Malta. “But the swim was pretty intimidating. I enjoy jumping in the lake and swimming around but had never attempted a swim of any distance, I’d also never tried swimming laps in a pool.”

With the racing season dying down, Malta says he is likely finished competing for the year but looks forward to participating in more events in 2023.

“Triathlon, duathlon and cycling races are the closest thing I’ve found to feeling I got through competetive sports in my youth,” he explained. “I get to compete with myself, and I get to compete with others. I just wish I’d discovered the sports sooner.”

Undermanned Electric City Football Club Squeezes 1-0 Win To Continue Playoff Push

Despite not having their top striker or head coach, Electric City Football Club (ECFC) Men’s team's lone goal was enough to defeat Darby FC on the road to keep themselves in the League1 Ontario playoff hunt on Friday.

They earned the win despite not having suspended head coach Randy Riberio (excessive yellow cards) and top striker Jordan Brown (undisclosed incident) in the team’s lineup.

The first half was quiet as both teams had a 0-0 draw into the half.

ECFC midfielder quickly broke the tie in the 50th minute as midfielder Connor Brown scored with a header off a fortunate rebound.

Electric City forced a turnover in the midfield and advanced into opposing territory through the sideline on a give and go. A centring pass went in front of Darby’s net and ECFC had a shot on net with a header. The ball rebounded off the keeper’s hands and Brown gave his own header for to eventually get the 1-0 win.

The win earns another three points for ECFC as they stand at 28 points. They are in ninth place in the standings. The team is nine points behind Simcoe Country Rovers who are in sixth place and occupy the final playoff spot.

ECFC must earn points in their four remaining games including at least three wins to remain in the playoff hunt. Simcoe currently holds the tiebreaker over ECFC due to more overall goals scored throughout the regular season. The ECFC women’s team has been eliminated from playoff contention.

Riberio can return to coaching as this game was his second of the two-game suspension. Brown is not playing in the team’s next match against Alliance United at home this Wednesday since he is serving a three-game suspension. He can be reinstated for Sunday’s road game against Vaughan Azzurri.

13U Peterborough Tigers Make History As First Ever Peterborough Team To Make It To Nationals

The Chemong Home Hardware13U Peterborough Tigers came out on top at the Ontario baseball Eliminations in St Thomas, making them the first team of any age group from Peterborough to qualify for Nationals.

This group of boys has been together for six seasons of baseball and their assistant coach Noah Crowley says they headed into this tournament with some big goals.

“This has been the goal since day one of this season,” he said. “The team has won two provincial championships, we’ve been league champs multiple times. We thought this year we should take the chance.”

The tournament ran from July 21 - 25 and hosted 23 teams, meaning the odds weren’t necessarily in the teams favour according to Crowley.

Stakes were high in the double knockout tournament as the boys faced Whitby in their first game on Thursday.

“The Whitby boys played very well throughout the whole tournament,” said Crowley.

The Tigers beat Whitby 7 - 0, which set up a game against East York on Friday.

After a back and fourth game that initially got the boys down, the Tigers came back to win 15 - 9.

In a double header on Saturday Peterborough beat Milton 8-3 then came out swinging against Hamilton and won 14 - 2.

By Sunday Peterborough and Leaside as the only two undefeated teams.

“Sunday’s game was tight,” said Crowley. “But we saw a lot of clutch performances and came out as the only undefeated team.”

The last day of the tournament was a busy one.

Peterborough started the day with an 11 - 5 win over Whitby, then went on to finals against Waterloo.

“We’ve played Waterloo six times this season, won three and lost three. They’re a very good team, very well coached with a lot of talent. We knew we were in for a grind.”

In their fist game Peterborough lost 5 - 0, meaning their second game would determine the champion.

In game two the Peterborough Tigers defeated Waterloo 18 - 7, advancing them to Nationals.

“There was a lot of excitement and a lot of emotion,” said Crowley. “The culmination of a season long grind with a goal in mind - achieving that goal was pretty neat. We go into every season with high goals and the realization that all the work and time put into it paid off in the end was amazing.”

But their work isn’t done yet.

“We hope to put on a show in Windsor.”

The team will travel to Windsor for the 13U National Championships as Team Ontario.

Crowley notes that the cost to travel to this tournament continue to rise, so they are hoping to secure funding or sponsorships from local businesses to help offset the cost for families.

“We hope people see what an opportunity it is for these kids.”

Peterborough Petes Sign Fourth-Round Draft Pick to Standard Player Agreement

It was the next step up in the hockey world for 16-year-old Braydon McCallum as the Peterborough Petes signed him to a standard player agreement in a contract signing held at Hybrid Sports on Thursday afternoon.

Petes general manager Michael Oke (left) introducing newest Pete Braydon McCallum at Hybrid Sports. McCallum scored eight goals and nine assists in the playoffs with the Brantford 99ers U16 AAA last season. Photo by David Tuan Bui.

The Petes drafted McCallum in the fourth round, 69th overall in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. The Petes did not have a second and third-round pick for that draft.

McCallum played for Brantford 99ers U16 AAA during the 2021-22 season with 22 goals and 26 assists for 48 points in 27 games. The centreman racked up three assists in four games at the OHL Cup.

“It was a great summer where I'm developing right now and getting better," said McCallum. “I can't wait to start the season and hopefully win an OHL Championship and the Memorial Cup.”

The Delhi, Ont.-born centreman says models his play after Stanley Cup champion and Colorado Avalanche’s Gabriel Landeskog.

"He's a leader,” explained McCallum. “He also plays the physical and skilled game."

“Through our evaluations, what really attracted us to Brayden was the fact that he demonstrated some skill and ability to compete,” said Michael Oke, Petes general Manager. “Game-in and game-out, every shift, he made something happen on the ice.”

Braydon is not the only family member in the OHL as his brother, Landon plays in the OHL for the Sudbury Wolves.
