Peterborough Petes Introduces New Marketing Department For Upcoming Season

New faces have hit the Peterborough Petes marketing team where two were hired internally into new roles and the other two as returning employees for the 2022-23 season.

The following are the four employees who have stepped into the marketing roles:

Adam King (director, marketing) - King joined the Petes Business Operations team in December last year as coordinator, game operations & major events.

In July, he began the role of director of marketing with the Petes. King previously worked for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment as a game presentation coordinator and worked with Toronto FC, Argonauts, Maple Leafs and the Marlies. A Brock University graduate, he did his undergraduate and Master’s degree in Sport Management.

Jordan Downer (coordinator, game operations and major events) - Downer originally joined the Petes in 2013 as a volunteer and has held multiple part-time roles with the team including game night host and DJ.

He was named the coordinator of game operations and major events at the start of the 2022-23 season.  His responsibilities are managing all aspects of a game night from a fan’s perspective, such as in-seat and on-ice activities, game night music and visual video board content.  Born and raised in Peterborough, Downer still resides in the city with his dog Dax.

Morgan Blaind (coordinator, marketing and community engagement) - Blaind joined the Petes as an intern last year. She soon transitioned into a part-time role after graduating from the Sport Management program at Durham College before getting hired full-time in November last year as the coordinator of administration and community engagement.

After demonstrating knowledge and interest in marketing, she made the transition to the coordinator of marketing and community engagement in August.

Connor Massie (coordinator, communication) - Massie rejoins the Petes as coordinator, communication. He handles the Petes social media, public relations and graphic design.

Massie originally joined the Petes in January 2020 as the game operations intern, then moved into a marketing role. He then worked as manager, game operations & community events for the Cape Breton Eagles of the QMJHL before returning to the Petes in August.

Born and raised in Peterborough, Massie attended Lakefield College School and holds an advanced diploma in Sports Management from Durham College.

Peterborough Petes Trade Defenseman To Niagara Icedogs For 15th Round Conditional Pick

The Peterborough Petes have acquired a 2024 conditional 15th round OHL Priority Selection pick (2024) from the Niagara Icedogs in exchange for the rights to Petes prospect, Gabe Runco announced on Wednesday.

Runco was drafted in the eighth round, 154th overall by the Petes in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. He spent last season playing for the Brantford Bandits of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL).

If Runco plays 30 OHL games between the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, the 15th-round pick becomes the Oshawa Generals eighth-round pick in 2024.

This is the team’s third trade in the last two months.

The Petes acquired Vancouver Canucks prospect Connor Lockhart in exchange for Sam Alfano and two picks on Aug. 8. Three days prior, they traded defenceman Josh Kavanagh to the Barrie Colts for a conditional sixth-round pick.

Peterborough Lakers Win Fourth Consecutive Mann Cup In a 13-9 Game Seven Win Over Langley Thunder

A four-peat for the Peterborough Century 21 Lakers as they won their fourth consecutive Mann Cup, defeating the Langley Thunder 13-9 in game seven at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Saturday.

The win gave Peterborough their 18th national title. They became the second team in the box lacrosse era to win four straight Mann Cups in a row, following the 1951-54 Peterborough Timbermen/Trailermen.  

“It’s been a roller coaster of emotions this week but well worth it,” said Shawn Evans, Lakers forward. “It was an unbelievable series and topped off by winning in seven in front of our family, friends and the fans/community of Peterborough. It was a dream come true.“

Langley won the first two games of the series but the Lakers won three straight to remain in the series. Langley forced a winner-take-all game seven with a 9-4 win to keep tensions high in game six on Friday.

In the final playoff game, the Lakers led 7-5 after the first period after a huge offensive showing, despite losing Evans to an injury the night prior. Langley took a brief 9-8 lead in the second but Cory Vitarelli tied the game 9-9 with 1:14 left in the period.

Lakers Matt Vinc and the defence held the Thunder scoreless while the Lakers scored four times. Thomas Hoggarth scored the game-winning goal 2:07 into the final frame.  

Curtis Dickson of the Langley Thunder was awarded the Mike Kelley Award as the Mann Cup MVP. He had 42 points in seven games, including 18 goals and 24 assists.  

Holden Cattoni led the Lakers over the series with 20 goals and 23 assists for 43 points.

Peterborough Petes Bring Back the Standing Room for Upcoming Season

Since 2003, the Peterborough Petes have reopened its standing room for fans during their home games called ‘The Sandbar’ announced on Friday.

The room is through a partnership between the Petes and Sandbagger Hard Seltzer.

The section, located at ice level in the area closest to the glass at the south end of the rink (also called “Section C20”, where the Petes are on offense in the first and third periods), will feature full food and beverage service, high-top tables and other amenities.

“We’ve been listening to our fans relive some of their favourite moments at Petes games, and so many of them involve cheering on the mighty maroon and white in standing room areas prior to the renovations,” said Petes Sales Manager Mike Kosciesza.

“The creation of The Sandbar gives Petes fans another exciting way to experience the best hockey in the province,” noted Jeremy Giles, Peterborough Memorial Centre facility manager. “Fans will feel like they are a part of the action in this new up close end zone area. Witness the speed, skill, and size of the best junior hockey players Peterborough has to offer from The Sandbar all season long.”

Peterborough Lakers Shawn Evans Breaks Mann Cup Points Record In a 10-5 Game Five Win

Peterborough Century 21 Lakers’s Shawn Evans made history by breaking the all-time Mann Cup points record with 207 as his team defeated Langley Thunder 10-5, making the home team one win away from a fourth consecutive Mann Cup.

Evans broke the record with his 204th point after getting an assist from Joe Resetarits’ first-period goal. Evans’s four assists totalled 160 along with his 47 goals in 46 games.

The honour was previously held by former Laker John Tavares with 203 points in 2012 (92 goals and 111 assists in 46 games).

The Lakers have rung off three straight wins on consecutive days after losing the first two games of the series. 

Holden Cattoni led the charge, scoring half of the Lakers’ goals with five.  

Lakers goaltender Matt Vinc and the defence stonewalled Langley, limiting them to five goals on 40 shots. 

Dane Dobbie led Langley with a hat trick. Curtis Dickson was held to one goal while Frankie Scigliano made 43 saves on 52 Laker shots. 

Game six is Friday night at the Memorial Centre.

Peterborough Lakers Even the Mann Cup Series With 15-12 Win

The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers evened the Mann Cup final series with a 15-12 win over the Langley Thunder at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Tuesday.

Both teams have won two games apiece and give a fresh start in the best-of-seven series. Langley won the first two games of the series but Peterborough has won two straight on back-to-back nights.

Langley started strong, ringing off four consecutive goals to lead 6-3 late into the first period. Peterborough battled back and netted three to tie the game at six going into the second stanza.

The game was evenly matched after the second as Peterborough held an 11-10 lead, scoring four of the first five goals.

Peterborough’s defence stepped up in the third, allowing only one goal to earn the 15-12 win. Lakers’ Kiel Matisz got the empty netter insurance goal with 19 seconds left to get the win. That goal assisted by Shawn Evans tied him with John Tavares for the all-time Mann Cup scoring lead at 203 points.  

“It’s most important to get the two points and to get the record just comes along with how we’re playing,” said Evans. “It’s rewarding but it goes to show the great teammates that I’ve played with.”

Lakers’ Mark Matthews and Holden Cattoni each had hat tricks.

Curtis Dickson led Langley with seven points (four goals and three assists). Dane Dobbie earned a hat trick and added five assists. Thunder goaltender Frankie Scigliano made 40 saves on 55 shots. 

Game five is on Wednesday night at the Memorial Centre with Game six on Friday. Whoever wins two of three games is declared the Mann Cup champion.

Seven Peterborough Petes Headed To NHL Training Camps

The Peterborough Petes have seven rostered players attending NHL training camps this month announced on Monday.

This includes six NHL drafted players and one undrafted invitee.

Jon-Randall (J.R) Avon and Brian Zanetti were selected by the Philadelphia Flyers. Avon is attending the camp on an amateur tryout, while Zanetti was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Draft.

Artem Guryev was selected in the fifth round by the San Jose Sharks. Petes defenceman Samuel Mayer is attending the Sharks’ camp on an amateur tryout.

Forward Connor Lockhart was picked in the sixth round by the Vancouver Canucks in last year’s draft.

Tucker Robertson was selected in the fourth round of the draft by the Seattle Kraken.

Peterborough native Chase Stillman signed an entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils in August 2021 and is attending their training camp this year.

“I’m very excited for the players attending NHL camps, the experience that they bring back will be very valuable to the Petes,” says Michael Oke, Petes general manager.

The training camps started on Monday.

Peterborough Lakers Get First Mann Cup Series Victory In 12-6 Win

The win makes it 2-1 in favour of the Thunder in the best-of-seven series as Langley won the first two games.

The Cattoni brothers, Holden and Taite, led the Lakers with 12 points between them.  

“We came out with a little bit more energy and played a little better and a little smarter,” said Holden Cattoni. “This was a must-win game for us.” 

Both teams alternated between goals but Langley led 3-2 after the first period.

The Lakers clamped down defensively while starting their own fireworks show offensively for the rest of the game. They outscored the Thunder 5-1 in the second and again in the third, 4-2.

Curtis Dickson led Langley with four points (1 goal and 3 assists). Captain Connor Robinson had a pair of goals while Frankie Scigliano made 37 saves on 49 shots. 

Game four is Tuesday night at the Memorial Centre with Game 5 set for Wednesday.

Peterborough City U13 Girls Triumphant At Durham Regional Soccer League Champions

The Peterborough City U13 Girls secured the win in the Tier 1 division of the Durham Regional Soccer League Championships at Herrema Fields in Uxbridge this past weekend.

The pressure was on as the girls needed either a win or a tie to claim that first place title in the Tier 1 division of this championship.

A 2-0 win over the North Durham United Football Club put the team in first. Grace Plunkett scored both game goals, adding to her season total of 19 and earning her third place in league scoring. Ellie Lewington finished the season with 9 shutouts the most among all teams in the League. 

The league this year was a combined league consisting of both U13 and U14 Girls. 

Peterborough City finished the year with a record of 11 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses, scoring an astounding 46 goals and conceding only 18.
