Peterborough Petes Allow Three Third-Period Goals in 4-2 Loss to Saginaw Spirit; Connor Lockhardt Records 100th Career OHL Point

It’s been two years since the Peterborough Petes played hockey in the United States but their return was forgettable as they lost to the Saginaw Spirit 4-2 on Sunday.

Petes’s Connor Lockhart wasted little time in recording his 100th career Ontario Hockey League point by forcing a turnover while shorthanded to feed Jonathan Melee a one-timer goal past Saginaw goalie Tristan Lennox for a 1-0 lead, his first of the season, and Lockhart would finally hit his milestone with 100 career points.

The Petes looked like they were able to keep the game under control in the second period until Saginaw pressed later in the period and scored with 59 seconds remaining. Roberto Mancini tied the game, putting it past Petes’s goaltender Michael Simpson. Tucker Robertson had a breakaway at the end of the period but could not get the shot off before the buzzer and the game remained tied into the third.

Saginaw took control of the game as they scored 3:50 into the third off a deflection from the Spirit’s Lincoln Moore for a 2-1 lead. The Petes countered at the 12:05 mark when J.R. Avon tied things at two apiece. Tommy Purdeller recorded his first career OHL assist with that goal. Two minutes later, Olivier Savard gave Saginaw the 3-2 lead and eventually tacked on an empty netter for a 4-2 win.

During the Petes three-game road trip that began Thursday, they lost to the West Division-leading Windsor Spitfires 3-2, beat the Flint Firebirds 3-2 and acquired Brennan Othmann (from the Firebirds) in exchange for defenceman Artem Guryev and three draft picks.

The Petes play on Thursday in support of Special Olympics Ontario as they host the rival Oshawa Generals.

Trent came close in 2016 and 2019, reaching the finals but lost both times to the Western Mustangs. This was the second time Trent had hosted the championship weekend since 2012.

"This team wanted to win badly. What the 12-3 scoreboard does not show in the finals is the blood, sweat and tears it took from the guys all year to make that happen,” said Mark Farthing, Excalibur men’s head coach. “The support from both Trent, as well as the community, has been outstanding. It was a special atmosphere on Justin Chiu Stadium all season and especially this weekend. Winning a national championship on the banks of the Otonabee River is a dream come true for all involved."

“We are so proud of our men’s lacrosse team and their performance not only this weekend but throughout the season,” said Leslie Spooner, Trent interim director of Athletics and Recreation. “They’ve represented Trent University so well. Their dedication and championship win is monumental and well-deserved.”

Trent earned a first-round bye since they were the top team in the East division and did not play on Friday, the opening day. The Excalibur defeated McGill 12-5 on Saturday in order to compete for the Baggataway Cup championship.

Trent’s Tyler Hendricks was named the team’s Player of the Game and ttack on the All Baggataway Cup Team.

Colton Armstrong and Taite Cattoni were named midfield players for the All Baggataway Cup Team, Curtis Conley for defense and Curtis Romanchych for long-stick midfielder and Aidan McLaughlin for face-off.

“Seeing him thrive, get drafted to the NHL, now he's playing in the NHL, see how he had diabetes and that it didn't stop him, seeing it motivated and that's something I want to bring to the Peterborough area,” said Simpson. “They might not want be a goalie in hockey, they may want to be a soccer player or something that they're dreaming of being. I want them to be able to look at my story say, 'I can do this.’”

Anyone can donate in-person at the game or online. The game will feature a silent auction for a game-worn Simpson jersey and a chuck-a-puck, with all proceeds going towards D-Camp registration fees.

“We’re very excited for Michael,” said Morgan Blaind, Petes coordinator, marketing and community engagement. “When he approached me to help him with this initiative, I knew we had to make his vision a reality.”

“Michael has led the way on this the whole way through,” Travis Vaughan, Tandem Diabetes Care territory manager. “It’s for a great cause in Diabetes Canada and D-camp and we’re really happy to support that. We’re really excited about the game.”

Fans are encouraged to wear blue on game night — as it’s the official colour of Diabetes Month — where the arena will be lit in the same colour in honour of the cause.
