The Petes asserted their dominance early in the first as Petes’ Connor Lockhart snapped a quick shot past Generals goalie Patrick Leaver in the high slot for a 1-0 lead. Six minutes later, J.R. Avon would score a highlight reel goal on a turnaround bid to extend the lead to 2-0. Jack Van Volsen got in on the action a minute later just shooting the puck on net and ricocheting off a Generals’ stick for a 3-0 lead.

In the second period, the Petes allowed a two-on-nothing breakaway at the tail end of their powerplay but goalie Michael Simpson shut the door on a Matthew Buckley shot. Newly-acquired Brennan Othmann dazzled the Peterborough crowd with a beautiful move off a give-and-go and extended the Petes’ lead 4-0 from a two-man advantage powerplay goal.

Oshawa came out firing in the third period, registering 13 shots on Simpson, the most of any period this game. Simpson stood tall, stopping all 13 including fighting off a Generals two-man advantage powerplay.

The Petes travel to Mississauga to play the Steelheads on Friday night tomorrow night.

Approximately $3,000 was raised on the night in support of the Law Enforcement Torch Run and Special Olympics Ontario.

Peterborough Petes Allow Three Third-Period Goals in 4-2 Loss to Saginaw Spirit; Connor Lockhardt Records 100th Career OHL Point

It’s been two years since the Peterborough Petes played hockey in the United States but their return was forgettable as they lost to the Saginaw Spirit 4-2 on Sunday.

Petes’s Connor Lockhart wasted little time in recording his 100th career Ontario Hockey League point by forcing a turnover while shorthanded to feed Jonathan Melee a one-timer goal past Saginaw goalie Tristan Lennox for a 1-0 lead, his first of the season, and Lockhart would finally hit his milestone with 100 career points.

The Petes looked like they were able to keep the game under control in the second period until Saginaw pressed later in the period and scored with 59 seconds remaining. Roberto Mancini tied the game, putting it past Petes’s goaltender Michael Simpson. Tucker Robertson had a breakaway at the end of the period but could not get the shot off before the buzzer and the game remained tied into the third.

Saginaw took control of the game as they scored 3:50 into the third off a deflection from the Spirit’s Lincoln Moore for a 2-1 lead. The Petes countered at the 12:05 mark when J.R. Avon tied things at two apiece. Tommy Purdeller recorded his first career OHL assist with that goal. Two minutes later, Olivier Savard gave Saginaw the 3-2 lead and eventually tacked on an empty netter for a 4-2 win.

During the Petes three-game road trip that began Thursday, they lost to the West Division-leading Windsor Spitfires 3-2, beat the Flint Firebirds 3-2 and acquired Brennan Othmann (from the Firebirds) in exchange for defenceman Artem Guryev and three draft picks.

The Petes play on Thursday in support of Special Olympics Ontario as they host the rival Oshawa Generals.

Peterborough Petes Fall to Hamilton Bulldogs 2-1 in Shootout After Stout Goaltender Battle

It was a battle of the goaltenders but the defending champion Hamilton Bulldogs squeezed out a 2-1 shootout win over the Peterborough Petes at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on a rare Tuesday night.

Goaltenders Matteo Drobac and Michael Simpson were heavily tested, facing a combined 71 shots for Hamilton and Peterborough respectively.

Shawn Spearing, Brian Zanetti, Konnor Smith, and Michael Simpson all returned to Petes lineup after being absent from the weekend games.

Peterborough only took five minutes to score when Tommy Purdeller tapped in a one-timer in front of Drobac to lead the Petes 1-0. The play was under review for an offside call but was deemed onside and the goal stood. Hamilton answered seven minutes later on the power play as Gavin White sunck a point shot past Simpson to tie the game at 1-1 into the third.

The second period became a goaltender battle as both Drobac and Simpson stood tall in net, stopping all 26 shots that came their way (12 shots from Hamilton and 14 from Peterborough). The game remained tied heading into the third period.

Both goalies proved reliable to their teams again as they stopped everything coming their way in the third. Drobac stopped 10 shots while Simpson turned away all eight as the game went into overtime.

Three-on-three overtime play was reminiscent of the prior two periods as the tie could not be broken despite good scoring chances from both teams. The game would go to a shootout, the second time in two weeks for Peterborough.

Trent Excalibur Men's Lacrosse Team Win First Baggataway Cup Title

The hosting Trent Excalibur men’s lacrosse team has earned their first Baggataway Cup Championship in front of 1,200 fans, defeating the Brock Badgers 12-3 at the Justin Chiu Stadium on Sunday.

Trent came close in 2016 and 2019, reaching the finals but lost both times to the Western Mustangs. This was the second time Trent had hosted the championship weekend since 2012.

"This team wanted to win badly. What the 12-3 scoreboard does not show in the finals is the blood, sweat and tears it took from the guys all year to make that happen,” said Mark Farthing, Excalibur men’s head coach. “The support from both Trent, as well as the community, has been outstanding. It was a special atmosphere on Justin Chiu Stadium all season and especially this weekend. Winning a national championship on the banks of the Otonabee River is a dream come true for all involved."

“We are so proud of our men’s lacrosse team and their performance not only this weekend but throughout the season,” said Leslie Spooner, Trent interim director of Athletics and Recreation. “They’ve represented Trent University so well. Their dedication and championship win is monumental and well-deserved.”

Trent earned a first-round bye since they were the top team in the East division and did not play on Friday, the opening day. The Excalibur defeated McGill 12-5 on Saturday in order to compete for the Baggataway Cup championship.

Trent’s Tyler Hendricks was named the team’s Player of the Game and ttack on the All Baggataway Cup Team.

Colton Armstrong and Taite Cattoni were named midfield players for the All Baggataway Cup Team, Curtis Conley for defense and Curtis Romanchych for long-stick midfielder and Aidan McLaughlin for face-off.

Trent’s Jackson Brown was named goaltender for the All Baggataway Cup Team, allowing only eight goals during the tournament.
