The Petes coughed up the first goal only 2:55 into the game as Zach Filak picked up a rebound and beat goaltender Michael Simpson on a wrap-around to give Sarnia a 1-0 lead. The lead did not last long as 2:39 later, Jax Dubois picked up a rebound and beat Sting goalie Nicholas Surzycia to tie at 1-1. Sam McCue got his first career OHL point with the primary assist.

Jonathan Melee committed a slashing penalty, making the Petes shorthanded but that benefitted Peterborough as Tucker Robertson took advantage of a giveaway at the Petes blueline and nab his 13th goal of the season shorthanded for a 2-1 lead. It was the team’s first lead in five games. Four minutes later, Nick Lardis would bury a Jax Dubois rebound for a 3-1 lead into the third.

The Petes got into trouble committing six minor penalties in the third period but their special teams stood tall, killing off all five powerplays (one came from coincidental minor penalties). Sahil Panwar, fresh out of the penalty box, found Chase Stillman for a goal and a 4-1 lead that ended up being the final.

The Petes next game is Front Line and Healthcare Workers Nighthosting the defending OHL-champion Hamilton Bulldogs at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday.

Hoops and Smiles At Special Olympics Basketball Championship Qualifier

Giant smiles dawned on the faces of roughly 75 Special Olympic athletes on the court as they participated in the Special Olympics Ontario Basketball School Championships Qualifier at St. Peter’s Secondary School on Friday.

Holy Cross, Crestwood, TASSS, Fenelon Falls Secondary School, St. Thomas Aquinas and host St. Peter’s were the six participating schools taking part in the qualifier.

The opening ceremony consisted of volunteers, teachers and police escorting the athletes down the hallway and into the gymnasium in a grand entrance.

“Every one of those kids in that gym is a champion,” said Ernie Ellement, tournament co-organizer. “It's not about winning or losing. I hate that word, ‘losing.’ We have winners and non-winners. The bottom is, every single one of those kids, they're a winner because they're here, they're playing, they're having fun and that's what it's all about.”

At the end of the day, Special Olympics Ontario gathers the results of the qualifiers and determines what teams advance to the school provincial championships that will be held next spring.

The event is fresh off a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Seeing friends and being active is what Special Olympics athlete and St. Peter’s student Hannah Goode has been looking forward to as a seven-year veteran of the program.

“I know who I am because I love people a lot,” she explained. “I am one of the leaders, I am one of the examples, I'm a team captain and I'm a good teammate. I help my friends from the program if they need but also I like to help others that have disabilities.”

“Watch the student be a champion on the floor when they score a basket and watch how much they light up,” said Ellement. “You visually see the happiness within them and that's what it's all about.

Chase Stillman got his turn 65 seconds later and cut the deficit to two entering the third period.

Peterborough Petes Extend Losing Streak On the Road to Ottawa 67's in 6-2 Loss

The Petes allowed the first four scores in the first half of the game, coughing up goals to Vinzenz Rohrer, Luca Pinelli, Henry Mews and Brady Stonehouse respectively.

Tucker Robertson eventually broke the shutout for Peterborough. He beat 67’s goalie Collin MacKenzie’s five-hole on the powerplay to make it 4-1 into the third period.

The Petes could not build any momentum as they allowed another two goals from Ottawa’s Matthew Mayich and Cooper Foster. Ottawa had six different goal-scorers contribute to their offense. Robertson was able to score his second of the game in the final two minutes to make it 6-2 but it was all for naught.

Peterborough suffered penalty woes throughout the game as they committed 11 minors, two majors and three game misconducts.

As both teams were given coincidental roughing minor penalties with 12 seconds left in the game, Liam Sztuska and MacKenzie got into a rare goaltender fight that ignited the crowd.

The Petes next game is Big Brothers Big Sisters night on Thursday against the Kitchener Rangers as Peterborough will attempt to snap their three-game losing streak.

U13 Hockey Team Raises $1,300 For Needing Families on Giving Tuesday

The U13 Central Ontario AAA Wolves put their generous spirit on display raising nearly $1,350 to purchase gifts on ‘Giving Tuesday’ for needing families for in Peterborough.

“It’s something that we’ve done with other teams we’ve coached,” said Chad Birkhof, Wolves head coach. “For us, it was a bit of a team-building function. Those kids raised that money on their own and they had the opportunity to buy for those families and children. It’s the gift of giving at Christmas.”

The team consisted of players from Peterborough, Omemee, Bobcaygeon and Lindsay. They shopped for gifts at Walmart on Chemong Road with their coaches and determined what would be suitable for the respective families they were helping.

The Wolves had sponsored a family of four and gave gifts to them as well as two other teenagers (one boy and one girl).

“We are so proud of this group of boys and so grateful that the Wolves are able to spread some Christmas cheer and support those who need it the most,” said Courtney Bribeau, Central Ontario Wolves ice scheduler. “Thanks to the coaches and mothers who helped pull all of this together.”
