Team Canada Wins Back-To-Back Gold Medals; Peterborough Petes' Brennan Othmann Gets Two Assists In 3-2 Win

Back-to-back gold medals for Team Canada as they beat Czechia at the 2023 World Junior Championships in a 3-2 overtime win with Peterborough Petes’ Brennan Othmann and Port Hope’s Owen Beck a part of the winning team on Thursday night.

Othmann assisted on the games first two goals for Team Canada. He was the secondary assist for Canada’s first powerplay goal with a diving stick check to send it back to Dylan Guenther. He and Brandt Clarke exchanged the puck once before a one-time goal from the former for a 1-0 Canada lead.

Othmann’s second assist for Shane Wrights's goal, came after he helped clear the defensive zone to Guenther where he kicked the puck to Wright after being pinned on the boards. Wright cut into the offensive zone against four defenders and backhanded his shot in for a 2-0 Canada lead.

Czechia had a late push with two third-period goals to send the game to overtime.= by Jiri Kulich and Jakub Kos respectively.

After 6:22 into the overtime frame, Canada turned the puck over in their offensive zone in 3-on-3 play. Joshua Roy and Guenther had an odd-man rush at the net, passed the puck between them and the latter scored for a walk-off goal for a 3-2 Canada win.

The win was Canada’s first back-to-back gold medals since 2008-09. Connor Bedard of Canada was named tournament MVP with nine goals and fourteen assists.

Peterborough Petes Extend Winning Streak to Seven In 5-3 Win Over Owen Sound Attack

The good times keep rolling for the Peterborough Petes, extending their winning streak continues to seven games as they took down the Owen Sound Attack in a 5-3 win at the Peterborough Memorial Centre (PMC) on Thursday night.

Scoring started in the final minute of the first period as J.R. Avon forced a turnover and dished a pass to Connor Lockhart for a Petes 1-0 lead heading into the second.

Owen Sound struck hard and fast, scoring two goals in the first 82 seconds as Colby Barlow and James Petrovski gave Owen Sound and 2-1 lead. Konnor Smith responded for Peterborough 35 seconds later and one-timed a Jax Dubois pass for a 2-2 tie. Lockhart continued his hot streak and buried a rebound to make it 3-2 Peterborough into the third.

Tucker Robertson scored late in the third period seemingly securing a Petes win with 4-2 lead with less than five minutes in the game. Owen Sound kept themselves in the game as Bryant scored 2:24 later for a 4-3 game. Chase Stillman put the game away with an empty netter and Peterborough walked away with a 5-3 win.

The line of Connor Lockhart (2G), J.R. Avon (2A), and Tucker Robertson (1G, 1A) led the way for the Petes. Konnor Smith scored his first of the season and Chase Stillman added an empty netter. Sam Mayer, Jax Dubois, James Guo, and Jonathan Melee each had an assist in the win. Liam Sztuska was fantastic again for the Petes, collecting his fifth win of the season in his first home start.

Liam Sztuska stood tall for Peterborough, stopping 27/40 shots on net for the win.

The Petes remain at home for their next game against the Kingston Frontenacs this Saturday for Harry Potter Night at the PMC.

Port Hope's Owen Beck Lends a Hand In Canada's 6-2 Win Over USA; Advance to Gold Medal Game

Port Hope’s Owen Beck and Team Canada are headed to the gold medal game at the 2023 World Junior Championship after a 6-2 win over the United States at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax on Wednesday.

The Montréal Canadiens’ prospect recorded an assist — his first point of the tournament — on Brandt Clarke’s goal roughly halfway through the third period.

Beck made a cross-crease pass to Adam Fantilli after scooping up a loose puck on a defensive zone turnover from the USA. Fantilli’s shot was blocked but ended up in the hands of Clarke and Los Angeles Kings prospect to snipe it top shelf for the 5-2 lead.

Beck was a late call-up to the team on New Year’s Day after Colton Dach was out of the tournament due to an injury.

Beck was invited to the World Junior Selection Camp for Team Canada but did not make the final roster at the time.

The Peterborough-born forward did not register a point in Canada’s win over Slovakia in their 4-3 overtime thrilling win.

Canada faces Czechia on Thursday night for the gold medal. Czechia dealt Canada’s only tournament loss 5-2 on opening day (Boxing Day).

Lakefield Jr. C Chiefs Acquire Defenseman From the Schomberg Cougars For a Player Development Fee

The Lakefield Jr. C Chiefs have acquired Brenner Boddy from the Schomberg Cougars in exchange for a player development fee announced on Wednesday night.

The defenseman played 12 games this season with one goal and four assists, totalling five points.

He is known to be a physical player with a hard shot.

The team’s game is against the Georgina Ice on the road this Friday.

Nominations Open For Kraft Hockeyville To Win $250,000 In Arena Upgrades

The annual Kraft Hockeyville contest nominations are open to anyone to select their city and arena to win $250,000 and host an NHL pre-season game announced on Sunday.

Last year, Douro-Dummer reached the final four to get upgrades for the Douro Community Centre. While they did not succeed in winning, they did win $25,000 for arena upgrades. Last year, Sydney, N.S. won the top prize, beating our Douro-Dummer; Princeton, B.C. and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que.

The cooling plant at the community centre located in Warsaw failed last year so the Douro Dukes Hockey Association — comprising 19 teams — operated out of one arena and four dressing rooms during that time.

The alternative dressing rooms often used for girls playing on mostly boys’ teams, we inadequate, practically considered closets according to Kerri Riel, Douro Minor Hockey Association (DMHA) secretary in a prior PTBOCanada interview.

The Kraft Hockeyville competition begins with the ‘Nominate and Rally’ phase, where community members take actions like sharing on social media and submitting photos’ on the Hockeyville site to earn points.

Nominated communities can earn ‘Rally Points’ in order to help qualify for the top four and ultimate winner. They account for 20 per cent of the community’s score.

  • Add photos of your arena - Three points

  • Add a note - One point

  • React with emojis to nominated stories and photos - One point

Nominations can be done at Kraft Hockeyville’s official website with the deadline at Feb. 19 at midnight. The grand prize winner is being announced on Apr. 1.

Peterborough Minor Petes Alumnus Tyler Savard Traded To Barrie Colts

Peterborough Minor Petes alumnus Tyler Savard has been traded to the Barrie Colts from the Soo Greyhounds in exchange for four draft picks announced on Tuesday.

The Greyhounds are receiving the following picks from Barrie:

  • Second-round pick (2024)

  • Third-round pick (2025)

  • Third-round pick (2026)

  • Fourth-round pick (2024)

Savard spent the 2017-18 season with the Peterborough Petes U15 AAA and the U16 team the following season.

He suited up in 30 games for the Greyhounds this season with 30 points (nine goals, 21 assists) and 70 penalty minutes.

Savard participated in the Philadelphia Flyers development camp this past summer.

“Tyler is someone we identified as being a player who can step into our lineup and make a difference,” said Marty Williamson, Colts head coach and general manager. “He’s a tough player to play against and has the skill set to go along with it. We feel Tyler will be a great addition to our team and we’re excited to start working with him.”

Peterborough Petes Keep Rolling With 5-3 Road Win Over the Defending-Champion Hamilton Bulldogs; Extending Winning Streak to Six

The Peterborough Petes extended their winning streak to six games as they defeated the defending OHL-champion Hamilton Bulldogs on the road in a 5-3 win at the FirstOntario Centre on Tuesday.

The Petes quickly got on the board as Sahil Panwar scored just 1:07 into the game getting his own dump-in behind the net and ricocheting it off of Bulldogs goalie Tristan Malboeuf’s pad and into the net.

Donovan McCoy got his first goal of the season four minutes later as he threw it at the net and deflected it in for a 2-0 lead. Avery Hayes got Hamilton on the board late in the period, scoring his league-leading 27th goal of the season to make it 2-1 into the second.

The second period was all Peterborough as J.R. Avon tacked on a short-handed goal on a breakaway at the seventh-minute mark for a 3-1 lead. Peterborough had a buzzer-beater moment as Avon fed Sam Mayer and ripped a one-timer past Malboeuf as the buzzer went. After review, the goal was determined to cross the line before time expired and it as 4-1 into the third.

Just like the first period, Panwar wasted no time for the Petes ashe scored again just 1:15 into the period. Hamilton made things interesting scoring two straight goals from Marek Vanacker and Artem Grushnikov to make it 5-3. Hamilton appeared to have scored at the final second but the goal did not beat the buzzer and was disallowed as Peterborough hung on for the win.

The Petes return home to the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday to take on the Owen Sound Attack on Bell Let’s Talk night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Ladies Curling Team Go Undefeated In Runback U18 Curling Championships; Qualify For Provincials

Team Langford finished off 2022 on a winning note as they went undefeated at the Canadian Junior Cup U18 Runback Championship at the Oshawa Curling Club in Oshawa in a three-day tournament concluding on Sunday.

Coached by Dave Levecque, the team consists of Jordan Graham, Hillary Brown, Toula Pappas, Katelin Langford (with the latter two from Peterborough).

They won their first and only match of Tuesday against Team Sone in an 8-3 win, scoring three points in the fourth and sixth end.

The team steamrolled Team Barrack in their second match on the second day in a 15-1 blowout win, scoring five, two, four and four points in the first four ends.

Team Wrigley made it close as Langford’s next opponent of the day, with the former, holding a 3-1 lead after five ends. Langley came back with three points in the sixth end and capped an insurance marker for one more point in the seventh for the 5-3 win.

Their final opponent before the playoffs was a close one as Team Leung tested Langford’s poise with a 4-4 tie into the eighth and final end. Langford was able to escape with a point to win 5-4.

Their semifinal playoff matchup against Team Sone was another rout, winning 7-1 to advance to the finals.

They finished off their undefeated tournament, defeating Team Leung in an 11-2 convincing fashion with five points in the seventh end.

The team is competing next in Cornwall for the Ontario Winter Games Last Chance Qualifier from Friday to Sunday. They’ll return to Oshawa for the Ontario Provincial Championships from Jan. 12 - 16. The winner of that event will represent Ontario at the National Championship in Timmins on Feb. 5 - 11.

Team Canada Moves to Semifinals in 4-3 Overtime Win Against Slovakia; Peterborough Pete Brennan Othmann Gets Assist

Canada was drawn against the second-seeded Slovaks from Group B and played at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax on Monday night.

Othmann’s assist came on the power play in the second period as Connor Bedard fed him a pass just outside the far-side faceoff circle. Othmann made a cross-crease pass to Dylan Guenther for a one-timer goal for a 2-0 lead.

The game eventually went into overtime with a 3-3 tie as Slovakia was able to overcome the two-goal deficit, midway through the third period.

Overtime saw magic from Bedard as he deked through the entire Slovenian team and scored for a 4-3 thrilling win.

“Connor is just something special,” explained Othmann. “He put on a show. Every game he put on a show in overtime and you get there on the ice, it’s nerve-wracking but it’s exciting. He can control those emotions better than anyone I know.”

Canada will face the top-seeded United States of Group B on Thursday night.
