Former Peterborough Laker Tracey Kelusky Inducted Into the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame

Former Peterborough Laker and four-time Mann Cup champion Tracey Kelusky has been officially inducted into the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Class of 2023.

Kelusky was one of five inductees for this year’s Hall of Fame. He joins Steve Dietrich, Bob Watson, William (Bill) Hutton and Larry Loyd. They were nominated in early August.

He won four Mann Cup Champions with the Lakers in 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2012.

“Growing up in Peterborough, Ontario... To hear my name has been announced into the Hall of Fame is humbling and certainly something I'm proud of,” said Kelusky.

Kelusky was a top-three scorer during his Junior A career from 1994 to 1996. He was awarded the Ontario Lacrosse Association’s Junior ‘A’ League’s Top Defensive Player in 1996.

He was drafted first overall in the National Lacrosse League in 2000 to the now-defunct Columbus Landsharks (who became the Arizona Sting in 2004 and disbanded in 2008). He was named Rookie of the Year and a Second-Team All-Star in 2001, a First-Team All-Star in 2002-2004 and named the MVP in 2003. He won the NLL Champions Cup with the Calgary Roughnecks in 2004 and 2009.

This is not Kelusky's first rodeo into being immortalized as he was inducted into the NLL’s Hall of Fame in 2016. Kelusky is the head coach of the Panther City Lacrosse Club in Texas.

Owen Beck's Four Assists Helps Peterborough Escape With 5-4 Overtime Win Over Brantford Bulldogs

Owen Beck’s four-assist night helped the Peterborough Petes get a 5-4 victory over the Brantford Bulldogs at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Sunday night.

Brantford struck first as Petes goaltender Liam Sztuska made a glove save but could not corral the puck and Florian Xhekaj jammed the puck in for a 1-0 lead 2:11 into the period. The Petes were able to counter on the power play as Tommy Purdeller passed it to Sam McHue in the slot and tipped it in for a 1-1 tie.

Brantford’s Nick Lardis went on a tear on his former team as he opened the period with two goals to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. He scored twice, 33 seconds in and ten seconds apart.

Anaheim Ducks prospect Konnor Smith wanted to get on the score sheet as he took a pass from outside the faceoff circle, crept in with a wrister and sniped it past Matteo Drobac to put the Petes within one. The shot was initially called no goal but further review deemed the puck in. Peterborough kept up the pressure as Beck won the faceoff and Samuel Mayer immediately one-timed it past Drobac to tie the game at three. Peterborough was not done yet as they had an odd-man rush with Purdeller and Beck. The latter one-timed it but Drobac made the save however the puck was loose and Chase Lefebvre cashed in on the rebound and gave the Petes their first lead of the night, 4-3.

In the third period, the Petes tried to hold on to their lead but had to go on the penalty kill just over halfway through. Brantford capitalized as Patrick Thomas made a cross-crease pass and Maren Vanacker one-timed it home to tie it up a four apiece and the game required overtime to settle things.

The extra frame saw Cole Brown of Brantford commit a tripping penalty and the Petes had a four-on-three powerplay. They made no mistake as Donovan McCoy made a one-timed shot from the point. The shot was blocked but Mayer was able to pick up the loose change and bury it past Drobac for a 5-4 win.

The Petes play again on the road Thursday against the North Bay Battalion at the North Bay Memorial Gardens. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Prior to his NHL career, Bogosian spent two years with Peterborough from 2006-08 and was the highest-drafted Pete in the NHL (with Mason McTavish in 2021). He had 18 goals and 76 assists as a Pete in two seasons.

He was selected third overall in the 2008 NHL draft by the Atlanta Thrashers (now Winnipeg Jets) after Steven Stamkos and Drew Doughty of the Lightning and Los Angeles Kings, respectively.

The 33-year-old defenseman has had a slow start to the season, with no points in four games with Tampa Bay.

Peterborough Petes Trade Connor Lockhardt to the Oshawa Generals For Two Draft Picks

The overage forward from Kanata played 73 games for the Petes since being acquired from the Erie Otters on Aug. 8, 2022. During that time, he has scored 30 goals and added 56 assists for 86 points.

During his championship run with the Petes last season, he had seven goals and nine assists for 16 points, playing in all 23 playoff games. In the 2023 Memorial Cup, he scored twice and added an assist for three points in five games.

He was originally selected by the Erie Otters in the first round, third overall, in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection. the Kanata Lazers product has played in 194 OHL games between the Otters and Petes, picking up 164 points.

“I’d like to thank Connor for his dedication to the Petes Organization and the Peterborough Community over the past two seasons,” said Michael Oke, Petes general manager and vice president of operations. “With league rules only allowing three over-age players per team, we had to make the very difficult decision to move Connor. We believe that we found a great fit for him to finish his junior career in search of an NHL contract and we wish him the best of luck moving forward.”

The Petes are back on the ice as part of a home-and-home series as they will play the Generals again in Oshawa at the Tribute Communities Centre on Friday night.

Peterborough Woman Wins First Fitness Competition After Losing Over 155 Pounds

Peterborough’s Terri-Lynn and her three-year weight loss quest of over 155 pounds resulted in a first-place finish at the International Drug Free Athletics (IDFA) Bodybuilding Competition at the City Playhouse Theatre in Vaughan.

Terri-Lynn’s before and after photos of her 155 pound transformation. Her competition outfit was made using roughly 6,000 rhinestones that she handmade. Photos courtesy of Terri-Lynn.

Terri-Lynn (who requested her last name be withheld) won in the intergender Transformational Challenge on Oct. 23. She started training for the event in July, working out six days a week for two to three hours. Terri-Lynn lost an additional 20 pounds leading up to the competition.

I’ve been training with Krista Easto,” she explained. “She gave me a set meal plan and workout plan and was with me every step of the way including cheering me on when I walked across that stage.”

She started her transformation in February 2020 after feeling dissatisfied and coming to terms with her prior lifestyle. She did lots of weightlifting as most of her workout routine during her weight-loss journey.

“I was just not happy. I wasn't living my life the way I wanted to,” explained Terri-Lynn. “I couldn't move very easily. I had knee pain and I was on medication that I didn't want to be on. I just needed to make a full lifestyle change.

Terri-Lynn said she felt she was regressing in her exercise routines and needed something to reignite her fitness regime. The competition was the perfect motivation to get her back on track.

“In July, I had gotten back into a rut and I needed something to motivate me and get me out of it,” she explained. “I've seen a few people I follow on Instagram who have also lost a massive amount of weight. They were doing fitness competitions.”

Originally, Terri-Lynn wanted to enter the competition to give her ‘biggest loser’ finale moment as her journey’s climax and becoming dramatically healthier.

“This was solely for me,” she said. “I didn't care to compete. I wanted to walk on that stage — in a jewelled bikini that I made myself — and show off to the world that I did it.”

For anyone wanting to start their journey similar to Terri-Lynn’s, she says now is the best time to start.

“Just do it,” she said. “You slowly start to fall in love with doing that it makes you want to do more and be more active.”

Terri-Lynn says she wants to compete in future competitions next summer if possible.
