Thomas Hoggath's Five-Goal Game Unable to Lift Lakers Past Oakville In 9-8 Overtime Loss

Thomas Hoggarth had five goals for the Lakers but they could not finish the job in overtime as they lost to the Oakville Rock 9-8 on Pride Night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday.

The scoring did not start until just over 8:30 into the game as Andrew Kew struck first for Oakville to finally break the ice. Matt Gilrawy answered back less than a minute later to tie the game.

Hoggarth tacked on a power-play goal with his first of five for a 2-1 lead. Alex Kew tied the game up in a hurry with less than eight minutes left in the period. Hoggarth capped off the period with his second with 1:26 left to make it 3-2 for the Lakers at the end of one.

After letting in an early Oakville goal, Hoggath once again scored and got the hat trick not halfway through the game. Joe Resetaris chipped in with a power-play goal for a 5-3 lead.

However, it was short-lived as the Rock scored four consecutive goals to take a 7-5 lead including two goals from Andrew for the hat trick.

The third saw the fewest goals scored between both teams with four but it fell in Peterborough’s favour. Joe Hiltz opened the scoring less than two minutes in to cut the deficit to one for the Lakers. Ryan Lanchberry answered back with a goal for Oakville to restore the two-goal lead.

With less than five minutes left in regulation, Hoggarth rung off two back-to-back goals to tie the game and send the game to overtime.

The night belonged to Oakville as Sam English scored his second of the night unassisted to put the Rock over the Lakers and own a 2-0 record over Peterborough.

“With all the success we had in the past, I think it’s good for us to go through it right now, get it over with at the start of the year so we can find our way during the playoffs,” said Hoggarth.

Doug Buchan made 46 saves, while NLL Goaltender of the Year Nick Rose made 58 saves to get the win for Oakville.

“I think we had our shots and Rosey played well,” said Hoggarth. “He played unreal. He’s one of the top goalies in the league and he proved it tonight. Next time those’ll drop for us.”

The Lakers hit Owen Sound to take on the North Stars for their first meeting on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Former Peterborough Petes Captain Donovan McCoy Nominated For Hockey Gives Blood’s Dayna Brons Honorary Award

Sudbury Wolves’ defenceman and former Peterborough Petes captain Donovan McCoy is a nominee for the 2024 Hockey Gives Blood Dayna Brons Honorary Award.

Over the past three seasons, McCoy has been involved in the Hockey Gives Blood player ambassador program in support of Canadian Blood Services. As a member of the Peterborough Petes, he played a pivotal role in organizing the largest player-led team blood drive and stem cell recruitment event ever seen in the CHL, according to a press release.

During last year’s Memorial Cup, he volunteered on his day off to engage with fans and advocate for the importance of blood donation.Since being traded to the Sudbury Wolves in January, the former Petes captain promoted the need for plasma donation alongside his teammates.

McCoy, a 2004-born defenceman, was originally selected by the Petes in the first round, 15th overall, in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection.

The Belleville native has played in 163 games over four years with the Petes, scoring eight times and adding 42 assists for 50 points. During the Petes OHL Championship, McCoy appeared in 22 games for the Petes in the playoffs, scoring twice and picking up eight assists for ten points.

Peterborough Lakers Hosting Second-Ever Pride Night This Thursday

The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers have brought back its Pride Night initiative for the next home game against the Oakville Rock at the Peterborough Memorial Centre this Thursday.

Sport a Rainbow will feature an online jersey auction via DASH. The Lakers will auction off specially created Pride Night jerseys and the proceeds will benefit Sport a Rainbow.

Fans are encouraged to sign up for their DASH account before game time. The auction will go live at 7 p.m. Thursday and conclude at 9 p.m. Friday.

Full Regular Season Schedule Released For Peterborough Petes

The Peterborough Petes have received their full schedule from the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) upcoming 2024-25 season, announced on Monday.

The season kicks off on Sept. 26 when the Petes host the Kingston Frontenacs at the Peterborough Memorial Centre (PMC).

This is the second year in a row that the Petes will host the Frontenacs to open the season. Last year, Peterborough welcomed Kingston to the PMC, raising their 2023 OHL Championship banner before a sold-out crowd. Peterborough would win the game by a score of 5-4.

Notable Petes 2024-25 home games can be found below:

• Oct. 17 at 7:05 p.m. - The Petes host their rival Oshawa Generals in their first matchup of the season.

• Nov. 26 at 7:05 p.m. - The Petes host their lone home matchup against the defending OHL Champion London Knights

• Jan. 23 at 7:05 p.m. - The Petes host their lone home matchup against the defending Memorial Cup Champion Saginaw Spirit

The CHL Import Draft takes place on July 3 at 11 a.m. The Petes hold the ninth overall selection in the draft.

Holden Cattoni's Hat Trick Leads Lakers to 9-3 Road Win Over Cobourg Kodiaks

The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers bounce back thanks to the stick of Holden Cattoni who netted a hat trick and three assists to a 9-3 road win over the Cobourg Kodiaks at the Cobourg Community Centre on Sunday evening.

The first period was a low-scoring affair but Rob Hellyer and Austin Hasen got Peterborough on the board for a 2-0 lead. David Anderson got one back for Cobourg and the score remained 2-1 heading into the second.

The next frame became the Holden Cattoni show as he opened up the scoring less than three minutes in. Colton Armstrong joined the scoresheet for the Lakers to help make it a 4-1 game. Cattoni on the strength of Peterborough’s special teams, scored two straight power-play goals to extend the Lakers’s lead to five, 6-1. Aaron Woods got one back for the Kodiaks but was quickly matched with Hellyer’s second goal of the game for a 7-2 score at the end of the second.

The third period also saw little scoring but played in favour of Peterborough. Koleton Marquis got on the board for the Lakers almost halfway through the period. Gareth Haigh scored 90 seconds later for the Kodiaks but it was the last goal they would score. Taite Cattoni puts the cherry on top with a power-play goal and Peterborough leaves Cobourg with a 9-3 win.

Lakers’s goaltender Landon Kells made 45 saves in the win.

Peterborough Lakers's Comeback Falls Short; Lose to Brooklin L.C. 9-7 in Home Opener

The Lakers' home opener did not go as they wanted as the Brooklin L.C. left town with a 9-7 win at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

The Lakers quickly fell behind in the first period, scoring only once thanks to Holden Cattoni but allowed four goals, putting the home team behind early.

Both teams alternated goals in the second, scoring three apiece but Brooklin maintained its three-goal lead heading into the final frame. Joe Resetarits, Cattoni, and Thomas Hoggarth scored for the Lakers, respectively.

Turner Evans helped kick off the third with a goal for the Lakers to cut the deficit to two. The momentum was quickly cut off but Brooklin’s Tanner Cook who scored less than three minutes later.

Peterborough rung off two straight goals from Cam Milligan and Cattoni’s hat trick score to put them within one with three minutes left. Cook put the dagger in Peterborough and scored in the final four seconds to give Brooklin the 9-7 win.

“Pretty pedestrian effort for 40 minutes and then we tried to chase the game in the third and it was too little, too late. It was a tough loss,” said Cattoni.

The Lakers fall to a 1-2 record. This is the second-straight home opener Peterborough has dropped, losing to the Brampton Excelsiors 14-13 last year.

“It’s always special playing here, it’s unlike anywhere else,” said Cattoni. “Unfortunate that it was the home opener and this was the show that we gave them tonight. We have to be better next week when we’re back here.”

The Lakers will try to rebound on the road to take on the Cobourg Kodiaks at the Cobourg Community Centre this Sunday at 6 p.m.

Flint Firebirds Sign AAA U16 Peterborough Pete to Standard Player Agreement

The Flint Firebirds have signed AAA U16 Peterborough Pete Ryland Cunningham to a standard player agreement.

“Playing in the OHL has always been a dream of mine so I’m super pumped to finally make that dream come true,” said Cunningham.

The 2024 second-round pick was taken 41st overall in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection.

The Coubourg native played for the Peterborough Petes AAA program for the past three years. In the 2023-24 season, he played 35 games for 17 goals and 20 assists. He scored three times in six games at the OHL Cup.

“Ryland is a great combination of speed and skill that plays with a feisty edge,” said Mike Oliverio, FIrebirds head scout. “He is a player we feel plays with a high IQ and a lot of pace. Ryland plays in the hard areas and drives the net with or without the puck. He was relied on heavily for his offense down the stretch and playoff run for his Peterborough team.”

“I have heard nothing but great things about the Firebirds,” said Cunningham. “I can’t wait to meet the rest of the team.”

120 Golfers Tee-Off at the Fourth-Annual 'Be a Saint" St. Joseph's At Fleming Golf Fundraiser Tournament

The fourth-annual “Be a Saint” St. Joseph's at Fleming fundraiser golf tournament saw a huge increase in golfers with 120 at the Quarry Golf Club on Thursday afternoon.

This year’s event saw a massive uptick in attendance since the third edition yielded 80 participants.

“It's great to see how our fundraiser is growing,” said Sarah Cox, St. Joseph’s administrative coordinator. “It's a great way to bring awareness to the community, we have lots of new golfers out and it's also great to see that we have so many people coming back year after year to support St. Joseph's at Fleming.”

All proceeds go towards upgrading St. Joseph’s infrastructure which needs work since the long-term care home is over 20 years old. It also funds replacing aging equipment and vital programs and services.

Last year’s event raised around $26,000 which is toward the organization's goal of $3.5 million over the next few years.

“We're a little over two-and-a-half million now,” explained Cox. “We're still working towards that goal, still raising money and even outside of the campaign, once we reach that 3.5 million, we're still going to keep fundraising because there's always going to be needs in the home.

After the tournament, a silent auction was held to raise additional funds for the not-for-profit long-term care home.

Peterborough Petes to Host Kingston Frontenacs In Home Opener For Second Year In a Row On Sept. 26

The Petes have their home opener date set against the Kingston Frontenacs at the Peterborough Memorial Centre (PMC) for Sept. 26 at 7:05 p.m., announced on Thursday.

This is the second consecutive year the Petes will host the Frontenacs to open the season. Last year, the Petes raised their 2023 OHL Championship banner before a sold-out crowd. Peterborough defeated their rival Frontenacs 5-4.

Last season, Kingston took the season series against Peterborough with a record of 5-2-1-0 in eight games, compared to the Petes record of 3-4-1-0. Over the last five seasons at the PMC, the Petes have a record of 12-6-2-1 against the Frontenacs.

Peterborough Lakers Ask Fans to Bring Non-Perishable Goods For Home Opener This Thursday

As the Peterborough Century 21 Lakers host their home opener against the Brooklin L.C., the team asks fans to bring non-perishable food items to the game to support Kawartha Food Share.

Bins will be stationed at each entrance of the Peterborough Memorial Centre for donations.

Kawartha Food Share aids more than 12,000 people monthly through 36 member agencies according to a press release. This includes four meal programs, four City food banks, six housing projects, seven county food banks and over 20 food cupboards across the City and County of Peterborough.
