Peterborough Petes Sign Defenceman 2023 Draft Pick to OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement

The Peterborough Petes make another addition as they signed defenceman Thanasi Marentette to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.

“Thanasi is a big, strong defenceman who is solid in his own end,” said Michael Oke, general manager and vice president of operations. “We had a chance to watch him a lot last season as he developed with the U18 Petes, working out and practicing with the OHL team regularly. This is another good example of how our relationship with the U18 Petes provides players with a development model and pathway to the OHL.”

The Petes selected the Windsor native in the 10th round, 196th overall, in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection. Last season, the 2007-born, 6’0” defenceman played 31 games for the Peterborough Petes U18s, scoring four goals and adding 12 assists for 16 points. He also played in 10 playoff games, scoring once and picking up four assists for five points.

In 2022-23, Marentette had 13 points in 32 games for the Toronto Nationals U16s, adding another three in five games in the 2023 OHL Cup.

“It feels amazing,” said Marrentette. “Being with the U18s last season gave me a great opportunity to learn about what it takes to be an OHL player. I can’t wait to get started.”

Peterborough Petes Sign Three Players to OHL Scholarship and Development Agreements

The Peterborough Petes signed Masen Johnston, Adam Levac and Genc Ula to OHL Scholarship and Development Agreements on Saturday.

“Adam and Genc were two players that our scouts were impressed with during evaluations last year,” said Michael Oke, general manager and vice president of operations. “We were very excited when we were able to select them in the draft.” 

Johnston, a Peterborough native, was originally selected by the Petes in the sixth round, 112th overall, in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection. The 2007-born, 6’1” goaltender featured in 21 games last season for the Peterborough Petes U18s, posting a 2.39 goals against average (GAA). In 2022-23, Johnston played for the Peterborough Petes U16, picking up a 1.20 GAA in 17 games. He also played in six games in the 2023 OHL Cup, recording a 2.89 GAA.

“Masen is another example of the great partnership we have utilizing the U18 Petes as our primary affiliate,” said Oke. “Last season, Masen was able to continue his development playing with the U18 Petes while working out and practicing with the OHL team on a regular basis including getting one-on-one time with Andrew Verner.”

“It’s surreal,” said Johnston. “Being from Peterborough and growing up watching the Petes, it’s a dream come true to sign with the team.”

Levac, a 2008-born forward from Embrun, Ont. was selected by the Petes in the fifth round, 85th overall, in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection. In 32 games last season with the Eastern Ontario Wild U16s, he scored 18 goals and added 24 assists for 42 points while serving as team captain. Levac also featured in two games for the Navan Grads of the CCHL, picking up one assist.

“It feels amazing to sign with the Petes,” said Levac. “I'm very honoured to have this opportunity and I’m excited to get started.”

Ula, a 2008-born defenceman from Chappaqua, N.Y., was selected by the Petes in the fifth round, 99th overall, of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection. In 22 games with the North Jersey Avalanche last season, Ula scored 11 goals and added nine assists for 20 points. 

“It’s incredible,” exclaimed Ula. “I’m very honoured and excited to sign with the Petes. I have a great opportunity in front of me and I can’t wait to take advantage of it.” 

Quinn Binnie has been reassigned ahead of Sunday’s preseason opener in Port Hope. Binnie, an overage forward, played in 57 games for the Petes last season.

“I’d like to thank Quinn for being a great ambassador for the Petes both on and off the ice over the last year,” said Oke. This was a very difficult decision, but one that we had to make due to the number of overage players each team is allowed to carry. We wish Quinn nothing but the best moving forward.”

“As we move into preseason, more tough decisions have had to be made,” said Oke. “We will continue to monitor these players moving forward.”

Peterborough County Family Recognized For Sports Volunteer Efforts With Commemorative Plaque

Township Council, Staff and community members gathered to celebrate the unveiling of the Wilford Family plaque at the Douglas Sports Centre Ball Diamond in Lakefield on Thursday evening.

This plaque has been installed to acknowledge the Wilford family (Jim, Yvonne and children Jessica and her husband Shawn, and Jimmy) for contributing to youth sports in our community.

“What stands out about the Wilford family is their deep commitment to the members of our community. They haven’t just supported our sports programs—they’ve helped build them,” said Sherry Senis, Selwyn Township Mayor. “Whether through countless volunteer hours, coaching, organizing, or contributing to the construction and maintenance of our ball diamonds, the Wilford’s have poured their hearts into making sure our kids have the opportunities and facilities they need to thrive and play.”

The annual Maroon vs White game takes place Friday at 4:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. The general public are invited to attend the game which will also be streamed live on the Petes Facebook page.

Two Peterborough Archers Awarded Petro-Canada FACE Grant

Archer Amelia Gagné and her coach Jess Ashton have been selected to receive the Petro-Canada FACE (Fuelling Athlete and Coaching Excellence) grant announced on Wednesday.

The duo has been chosen from a group of 55 up-and-coming athletes and hopes to represent Canada at the Olympics.

Archery Canada nominated them and they are the only archery athlete-coach pairs to receive the grant. Each National sports organization across Canada can nominate athletes and coaches based on their pathway toward future Olympic events.

Gagné and Ashton are both from the Peterborough area and train there. The development of the sport of archery in the region has had challenges, starting with the closure of a nearby facility in 2019, leaving competitive archers with limited options to train. They train near Red Head Archery, a new facility in Douro Dummer that opened in 2021. The two have been able to continue to work together through perseverance. They worked together at the 2023 Canada Winter Games and competed in the Youth and Masters Pan American Championships in 2024 in El Salvador. In September, they will be heading to the World Archery Championships in Alberta.

“I am so grateful to have received this funding from Petro-Canada,” said Gagné. “The money will allow me to participate in more international tournaments and assist with equipment upgrades. This will greatly benefit my progression in archery and in achieving my goals as a high performance archer.”

As a woman who has grown up in this sport, as a previous competitive archer myself, I understand the time, dedication and countless hours of work that go behind high performance archery,” said Ashton. “Programs like the Petro-Canada FACE program are invaluable for athlete development as we work towards Amelia’s Olympic goals.”

Potential Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes are awarded a $10,000 FACE grant to help them along their journey. The grants are often used for training, equipment, coach education, and travel expenses for competitions. Since 1988, the fund has provided more than $14 million in support to Canadian athletes and coaches.

'Fore the Kids' Golf Tournament Returns For Rotary Club of Peterborough On Sept. 26

The Rotary Club of Peterborough has brought back the ‘Fore the Kids Golf Tournament’ at Bellmere Winds Golf Course for Sept. 26 to support local children.

One example of a child being supported is Jude, who is three years old and has a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy and a Global Development Delay. He has been accessing Five Counties programs like physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy since he was four months old.

“Thank you to everyone who supports this event. It shows the families at Five Counties that they have an entire community behind them, cheering them on.” said Julie, Jude’s mother.

The shotgun start begins at 1 p.m. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for individuals and businesses.

Golfers of all skill levels are invited to register for the event at a fee of $150 per person for $600 for a foursome. The price includes a round of golf, a cart for convenience, lunch and the chance to win prizes.

Peterborough Lakers Comeback Bid Falls Short, Eliminated By Six Nations Chiefs In 11-8 Loss

The Peterborough Lakers' season ended the same way it did last year, eliminated by the Six Nations Chiefs in the MSL final, as the former lost 11-8 in Game Six at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Tuesday night.

The Lakers started the night in a huge hole, allowing the first five of six goals for a 5-1 deficit. Joe Resetarits scored a late powerplay goal to round out the period.

The second period was a low-scoring affair but did not favour the Lakers. Thomas Hoggarth opened the period with a score but that’s all Peterborough could muster. Cody Jamieson and Lyle Thompson scored for Six Nations and the Lakers dug an even bigger hole going into the third with a 7-3 score.

Peterborough tried to mount a comeback in the third, scoring the first four of five goals. A pair from Turner Evans, Owen Hiltz and Hoggarth contributed for a 8-7 game, trailing only by one.

Six Nations kept with Peterborough step-for-step as Jamieson to break the Lakers’ run. Hoggarth immediately responded to keep it within one but Six Nations was able to pull away with two more goals and end the comeback bid for the 11-8 win and MSL title.

Hoggarth was named the offensive player of the game and Eric Shewell as the defensive player.

Warren Hill made 44 saves for Six Nations and shared the Johnny ‘Shooter’ Davis Award with Doug Jamieson as playoff MVPs. Each goaltender was 4-1 in the postseason.

Two Peterborough Lakers Named to Team Haudenosaunee For World Lacrosse Box Championships

Peterborough Lakers’s Koleton Marquis and Thomas Hoggarth have been named to Team Haudenosaunee for the World Lacrosse Box Championships running from Sept. 20 to 29 in Utica, N.Y.,

Marquis was drafted by the Lakers fourth overall in this year’s MSL draft on Jan. 21 while he was a sophomore at Johns Hopkins University. The Kahnawake forward has appeared in 10 regular-season games and two playoff contests for the Lakers this season. He had nine goals and 17 assists during that span.

Hoggath joined the Lakers as a rookie during the 2016-17 season. He won four Mann Cups with Peterborough and also named Top Transition Player in 2018 and 2019.

In eight regular-season games, he scored 22 goals and 15 assists for 37 points. In 11 playoff games, he added another 20 goals and 14 assists.

The World Championships has 28 teams in the men’s competition split into seven pools.

In the men’s competition, pool play will take place over five days. The top eight finishers will advance to the playoffs while the teams ranked ninth through 16th will compete in a play-in round for the remaining four positions.

The quarterfinals, semifinals and medal rounds for both championships will occur from Sept. 26 to 29. The bronze medal on the 28 and the gold medal the following day.

The Peterborough Petes have announced their 2024 Training Camp roster, with 63 players expected to attend camp starting Tuesday at noon.

There 57 skaters and six goaltenders slated for this year’s camp.
